addendum 2 long term stability of all media is flawless so far. However I would still go for the Ricoh Media if I could get them. Regarding Verbatim DVD + and - media: I had burnt several, especially +, at the beginning of this year (2x, burning faster was no good at all) which were not fully readable in any drive except the burner itself. Well, the situation has changed. Now 10 months later all these media are readable, and not even just readable, but quite ok. They all play now on my DVD player. It's weird that the discs get better with time, usually it's vice versa. But I think it proves the fact that the firmware can not handle these media well. Had some CMC media recently (again Aldi) which worked ok at 4x burnspeed, faster not recommended. My favorite RW Media are still Verbatim DVD+RW 4x. Almost same price as regular R media, should last longer than R media and always readable at 16x. My DVD player plays them as well ;o) Hey guys, if anybody finds a firmware upate, or region free, please leave a note here. I guess that's why most people come to this page. And keep emailing Panasonic for a firmware update ! still rate it 9 since I haven't had a single coaster so far :o) Comments posted by Henry from Germany, December 20, 2005. I bought this drive on Ebay.co.uk for £35 including delivery WOW! Manufactured in Jan this year (2005). Ultra speed drive it is great! But only use x4 DVD discs as they are four for one pound (GBP) at Poundland (www.poundland.com). Chris (sparesdealer and modealer are the seller's ebay id's - he has the best prices). addendum best media for this burner is RICOHJPNR02 I have burnt at least 50 pcs. and all of the work perfectly at highest read speed in any drive I have tested. Right now I am testing Ritek media R03 since my Aldi store here changed from Ricoh to Ritek :o(, but the 8x Ritek media is only recognized at 6x. Result for Ritek is the lower the burn speed the better the result, 6x readable but slow, 4x seems to be acceptable. 2x for best result. medium read speed on my old toshiba 1612 One outstanding 'feature' of this burner is definetely that I haven't had a single coaster so far, no matter how good or bad the media quality was. I rate it 9 because there are media that work perfectly (once you find them), it is an excellent reader and no-coaster burner. bad is the firmwareupdate policy of matshita, there are no updates. many cheap media only recognized at slowest speeds. good media (see post above) like Verbatim (MCC) or TDK can only be read ok by the burner itself. best reader I've ever seen. reads CDRs without problems that are not even recognized, or completely unreadable on other drives like Ricoh, Yamaha, Toshiba, etc. does not like Verbatim DVD + or - media :o( the burner can read back without problem, but the discs will hardly work anywhere else. + work better than - so far CMC AF1 work best (Imation), but I don't know the long term stability. results with verbatim DVDRW + or - are awesome ! slow burner, since it's CLV only. uses several zones of different constant speed. takes forever to load media. resfuses to burn a lot of media (Moser Baer, Plasmon) at the rated speed. firmware still 1.0, no updates available.
