| i got this for 74.99 with tax it was 86$ (CAN) OEM. when i got it, i flashed it to the retail version and updated the firmware to the newest B7S9. ive only tried one media in it, the maxell dvd-rs, but already it performs amazingly. the media is only 8x while it can burn excellent at 12x. | This thing kicks ass! Paid $40 after rebates the day after Thanksgiving. Branded as I/O Magic. Writes 8x on 4x DVD+R media and they play flawlessly. The 40x CD burning is also great - now I don't need to have a seperate CD burner. Have not upgraded firmware yet. Have not tested dual-layer capability - waiting for media prices to drop. | This is the cheapest 16X and I didn't expect much from it but to my surprise it burn cheapo 4X DVD-R like onidtech and VDSPMSAB01 pretty well. Altho it still has problem with ultra cheapo Yi Jhan 001 but I haven't heard any burner can handle the Yi Jhan well. Excellent drive for the money and its performance is well above average. | Just popped this toy into my PC two days ago and so far so good. I have backed up 10 DVD+R's and 3 RW so far at top speed. Even burned PLATINUM 8x at 16x and worked on my pioneer 360k. | Super drive, an improvement to my previous Benq 822A, this 1620 can burn 4X DVD-R cheapo like VDSPMSAB01 and Onidtech with good results, above 90% according to Nero DVD quality test. | Hmmm. I flashed my BenQ DW1620 with the new B7P9 firmware and still I am unable to burn a DVD using Pinnacle Studio 9.3.5. The BenQ DW1620 LED pattern indicates the Imation DVD+RW media is being burned with the DVD files from Pinnacle Studio; however, when the DVD drive ejects the disc and I try to view files, I notice there is nothing written on the DVD disc. | I just got this burner for a pretty good deal. When I brought it home though I found that it burnt DVD's just fine, but the DVD-R's that I have (Maxell 4X DVD-R) wouldn't play in my DVD player. Although they would play in my DVD-ROM on my computer just fine, they wouldn't play in any other DVD player properly. (I checked a bunch of DVD players at Future Shop) I had never had a problem with my Plextor DVD-writer but I wasn't quite ready to give up. I had downloaded the latest firmware listed on the site. (Firmware v. B7K9) but no luck. After a little more research on the net I discovered that there is a much more updated version of software that isn't listed at Ben-Q! To get the most updated version of software go to this link: http://support.benq.com/files/storage/Firmware/DW1620/B7p9.zip After I upgraded to the latest software I haven't had a problem since. At 4x he record 10 discs which even he can't read :( I use TDK printable discs on my NEC 1300 and 5500 at 2x speed (for a movie), but I can't do this on this new BenQ. BenQ drives now set book type (bit setting), to DVD-ROM automatically. Do research on this. Yes. The 1620 will burn -R media but........ Bottom line....get some +R media listed in this thread. | I just bought this drive to replace my aging Pioneer A04, but haven't got a single disc to play in a standalone. Checked here and see "prefers +R media". Well, I had just bought 400 Benq DVD-R for the Pioneer! Will this drive not burn -R at all? I've always found historically that +R was not as compatible in standalones. | It has some of the best burn scans of any burner. It applies DVD-ROM to all + media automatically for maximum compatibility. BenQ has constantly released firmwares to overspeed media and improve quality. Probably overspeeds more media then an other burner with official firmware. New firmware will increase dual layer to 4x. | gave this a 7 because my double layer burns work fine until the last 15 mins of movie then it starts to be really jerky, have tryed it on 3 home players that play everything except a can lid.The single layer disks play great. I am using VERBATIM DVD+R DL amd MEMOREX DVD+R single layer and STAPLES DVD-R single layer. My system is a Intel P4 2.8 G Hyper Thead with 1 G Ram and a MAXTOR 160 G Hard drive with 9 ms access (udma 133) was just Defrag. anyone have any ideas? | Work on your spelling Lou, it's Pinan, and I have to disagree with your statement: "It smooth but no match for my NEC ND1300A,not even close,only in price...." Back this up with some data please. I'm well versed in the NEC as well and it's no better a burner, using the specs that I wrote. The BenQ is faster as well. However. I have determined that the TY disks are much better and more consistent than the Prodisc. At only about 50cents per disk it's a great deal. The 1620 can be had now for under $90. | I have added Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R to my collection and they burn very well at 12X and 16X with the 1620 as well. A bit better, and perhaps more consistantly (more $ though) than the Prodiscs. | *As promised, my views on the 1620 (I also own the 822a and the 1600): All three work very well, so I'm posting pretty much the same info on this one too.* Love this burner! Did as much research at clubcdfreaks on this and others as I could, but it's new so.... This drive is known to prefer + disks, as with pretty much all BenQ DVD/RW drives. It also has auto bit setting to DVD-ROM. I burn Arita/Ridata (RICOH JPNRO1) 4x disks and Prodisc 8X R03 (overburn Prodiscs @ 12x) and get perfect burns as per KProbe scan. Using *official* firmware B7H9 (not beta B7H9). PI average under 8 and PO (PIF) under 3-4 (at 12X burn). 10000/500 or so for both respectively (stock firmware B7C9 was lousy). About 6 min and 30 sec. for full disk burn at 12X and 5:50 for a 16X burn. Yup. That's as fast as they get. Not much difference between 12X and 16X. Do your research! All drives do not burn all media the same, and some are very fussy! Don't use crap/cheap media. Do your research! Again. BenQ drives prefer DVD+R media.
