| As the other one pointed out, it burns Ritek 1X DVD-R media at 2X speed without any problem! (after updating the patched firmware) No coaster yet. Highly recommended. | Bought this writer over two weeks ago and have not had any coasters. Been using various cheap 1x & 2x media with no issues. I have updated firmware to 1.30 and have had no issues with cheap media Princo, Melody etc. Problems others claim to have with this burner are either due to stupidity or dodgy software. I use RecordNow Max burning software. Great burner!!!! Fully reccommend unit to anybody in the market. Being its 5th generation Pioneer seem to have it sussed. | Just built the new system. Pentium 4 2.53ghz with 1gb of DDR2700 ram. 80 gb hard drive 8mb buffer 7200rpm. Bought a spindle of 100 Ritek's General Use 1x media from rima.com ($110.0 before taxes), burned 10 movies with no problems or coasters. The media makes the difference with this drive. | I've had a long time the Pioneer DVR-A04, and due to the higher speed I've replaced with the DVR-A05. Allthough people recommend e.g. Sony DVD +/- R(W), my experience (I do video mounting for e.g. weddings) results in a higher compatability with the Pioneer. Since I started DVD burning, I had only 1 bad DVD (used several brands Verbatim, Ultron, Traxdata, Fuju, Sony, ...). In my car I have an Alpine DVD player, and with DVD's made by the Pioneer I have no problems. I do have problems watching DVD's from Sony (actually it is not possible at all to watch them). Only problems with certain movies. Will try other media like Ritek and Verbatim. Other than that excellent DVD-Rewriter. Every once in a while you get a failed burn ... but, for the disc price ... it is well worth it. The discs play fine on both Toshiba 1800 and 2800 DVD Players and Panisonic DMR-E30 I purchased the EZCD Printer - prints directly on printable DVD or CD's - works really great and solved the "weight" problem I was experiencing with many the DVD Labels (except the "clear" ones - which cost a fortune). Discs would spin down and stop about 1/2 way through a movie - no more problems since the switch to the EZCD Printer Have been very pleased with results. | I like it. I've only burnt Optodisc's OR470-000 media. They say it's 2x but can only burn at 1x. Running FW 1.0, and I'm afraid of upgrading to the 1.21 because of all the negative comments with after upgrade some disks are unrecognizable... | Bought cendyne at staples to find out it was a pioner dvr-105.bought some memorex dvd-r`s to go with it only to find out they wont play back on my home player after about 30-40 min of playing great so i put them back in the pioner dvr and had the same problem.so to avoid throwing cash in the garbage i picked up some maxell dvd-rw`s and burnt them played greaton the dvd-105 and home player.after looking at the coments sectition and seeing bobs post on feb.23 i realized what my problem was the memorex dvd-r`s are junk on this burner.check out bobs post and look at the link to his pic`s of the dvd`s after being burnt and how the memorex dvds are all foggy......thanks bob i didnt even notice the differance as i have only had my burner for a few days now.the firmware on the pioner is 1.21 the newest.also the software is junk that comes with the burner i picked up a copy of dvdXcopy to use with it works great. | This unit has done everything I have tried on it and done it well, with one exception. I picked up some Khypermedia disks locally for 5/$5 and it wouldn't recognize them. I was warned here as I read from other users, but I tried anyway. This is a great unit for making disks that playback in my stand alones, portables and even PS2. I highly recommend it. | Pioneer DVR-A05 Almost took drive back but after some trial and error (DVD-RW's thank god) I'm finally getting some good results. I've upgraded to the v1.21 firmware and did a 4x burn (Pioneer DVD-R) of a movie I own. Plays PERFECTLY on the Pioneer A05 and my stand alone DVD player (Toshiba SD2200). I used DVD Decrypter/DVD2One/Nero v5.5.10.15 (good results so far). Media I've tried that works: Pioneer DVD-RW, Pioneer DVD-R, Verbatim DVD-RW, and Optodisc DVD-RW. I tried 1 generic DVD-R and it turned into Swiss cheese (salesman said it's Ritek but has no markings, curious). The A05 doesn't appear to like generic media. Will experiment with other media's this week. I would have given it a 10 if it supported 'generic' DVD-R's but still very happy with my purchase. | Generally the retail box of this drive is £240 in UK inc. VAT. I bought it from www.Simply.co.uk boxed as a Lacie drive. for £198 inc VAT post free. This was a full retail box with full software and a drive still with Pioneer A05 label on it! Funny how its cheaper under a different brand than under its own. Still trying to get 4x DVD's but burned an Emtec 1x no problem straight from a DV movie. Played in Alba DVD 103 player perfectly. | Great drive, got from Fry's for $129AR. Has burnt 1x Primco DVD-RW and 2x Apple DVD-R's fine - they play back in my Apex AD-1500 DVD player and my PC's Pioneer 103S DVD-ROM. Getting some Ritek04 4x DVD-Rs next week to try out some 15mins burning! No coasters so far with Nero 5.5.10.7b Enterprise, I've also written a couple of CD-R's at 16x with this drive/software (32x generic CD-R's) it is also buffer underun proof which means you can continue to use your computer whilst it's writing. | ive had this drive for 2 months now. to start with i had various problems with trying to write at 4x, but later inspection found that is was system related. i was trying to use my raid channels to stick the 105 as additional writer, but the writers burn proof was having to kick in each time i tried to use the burner. my resoltion to the problem was sticking my 105 as master and additional writer as slave on ide 2. . this maybe differ for others. great writer, cheap, supports the main format(dvd-r),no probs with ritek 4x or fws 4x and ive had no coasters the software i favour is stomp and vob. | I have had the Pioneer 105 for about two months now. No burning failures with the drive it works great. I have found Record Now Max to be the best application to use with this burner. I have not upgraded the firmware on the basis if it isn't broke don't try and fix it. Media wise Bulkpaq 2x DVD-R(light green colour) and Ritek 4x (15-18 minmutes to burn) work great without any issues for Video and data. I went for the OEM version since the software bundle isn't great and adds an extra £50 to the retail price. Bulkpaq 1x speed is okay for this burner though Data only. | Bought a Cendyne DVR-R at Staples recently and a box of Princo 1x media at Rima. I'm actually using this in an external firewire enclosure connected to a PCMCIA card on my laptop. Firmware was 1.00. Burned about 20 coasters and was ready to give up. Tried Maxell 2x discs and also Princo 2x and also got failures. Tried RecordNow Max, Latest Nero and CD-Creator Platinum and also VOB CD/DVD. Had problems with all of them. Defragged the hard disk and tried again. Failed once more. Reformatted the hard disc and just loaded minimal software. Failed again. Updated the firmware to 1.21 and tried again with the Princo 1x and RecordNowMax. Failed again. However tried Princos with Nero 5.5.9.14 this morning, and finally a successful burn. Hope this is not a one-off. I'm reluctant now to change anything, and will use Nero from now on. | Have burned about 15 video dvd's with the 105 drive. Has burned perfectly with all media except Khypermedia. Have used Meritline,Samsung,Princo,Maxell, Memorex, and Imation DVD-Rs as well as Sony DVD-RW's with no problems. I use Nero 5.5.10.7 for burning and have 4 computer DVD's including Pioneer, Liteon, and LG. All play everything that has been burned. | This is one sweet DVD burner for the price ($129 AR/Cendyne from OfficeMax). Not one single coaster so far. Using 4x Ritek DVD-R and 2x Pioneer DVD-RW which burn at 4x and 2x respectively. DVD2One can backup a movie in under an hour from ripping to completion of burn. You won't go wrong buying this (or Cendyne equivalent). Only wish the CD burn speed was faster than 16x.
