| I have had this drive for about 3 weeks now. I am using Studio 8 to make and burn my home movies. I have firmware 1.0 So far I have made 8 DVD’s that will play in any DVD player that I have put them in, about 6 players all together. (Sony, JVC, Orion, Panasonic, ect) The only problem is I have also made about 11 coasters. The Pioneer disks that came with the player worked great. I have tried some of the cheaper media. 1.Memorex I could not get one good disk from this media, made 7 coasters out of the 7 I tried. 2.Verbatim Better 4 out of 6 were good DVD’s 3.Imation About the same as Verbatim 4 out of 6 good DVD’s Some of the good disks were burned at 1x and some were burned at 2x it did not seam to make a difference. Other then the one Pioneer 4x that came with the drive I have not tried to burn any of the new 4x stuff. I don’t think the problem is with the DVD burner. I think it is with the software I am using. All of the coasters that I have made have started to burn fine in fact I can put them into the DVD player and they will play what has been burned to them. So I think the Burner is doing what it was made to do. Now if we could just get the software to do what it says it will do, everything would be great. I could not get the software (sonic crap) that came with my burner to work it would just kill the program on start up, so I have uninstalled it from my system. I have been thinking about updating to version 1.21 of the firmware but it says you cannot go back to a previous version of firmware after v1.21 has been installed. | Just did my first burn using video studio 6. worked the first time Tried to use Nero 5.510 and was not able to burn a mpeg video to a dvd. downloaded the mpeg-2/dvd patch. Does Nero convert mpeg files to DVD format? The roxio easy cd creator dosn't seem to have this option also. I rate at 8.0 due to the software package I had to do a system restore every time I installed the arcsoft showbiz. | Received a new unit last week and flashed it to firmware 1.21. Twelve burns so far, no coasters. Six video DVDs all played fine in my Panasonic player. Nero burns cheap Ritek DVD-R media at 1x only. But with Pioneer-branded DVD-Rs (DVS-R47A/U), Nero offers 2x and they burn flawlessly. | Hi, I Also used the RITEK media and they worked just fine on my LG3351P standalone player. The supplied MyDVD sw is very simple but does the job very well (despite what people say - it worked for me) What i didn't figure out yet is what mode to use Nero, i saw some postings that say UDF 1.02 but that didn't work (yet). | I bought this about a week ago from futureshop. So far no problems burning at 2x. Only issue I got is when im erasing the RW that comes with it. Programs "Stop Responding" after its done erasing media. Anyone else has this problem? CD wont eject , must reboot to get cd out, then cd is normal again and at full capacity. | I just bought this drive and did 2 burns so far I have firmware 1.21 I burn a DvD movie on the pioneer DvD-RW disk. It works in my Pc but my DvD Player doesnt like it. So I burn the same build on a cheap no-name (Princo) 1x DvD-R and it worked. Took 1 hour to burn. The DvD was author with DvDMaestro and burn with InstantCD+DvD. Backed up all my data onto DVD-RW and also used Norton Ghost 2003 to do a system backup to DVD-RW! Before I had to use 6 CDRWs to do a complete backup--NOW I only need one DVD-RW! | I Have used my DVR-A05 for a couple of weeks. Backed up my hard drive using the 4X Pioneer RW disk that came with the drive using Norton Ghost 2003. This worked well and I am able to write over the disk, so this looks like the answer for backups. It used to take about 7 compressed CDR disks and Ghost did not like reused CDRW media. I am putting 2500 slides and still pictures on DVD for family distribution using Ulead pictureshow. My DVR-A05 test DVD's look good and I have tried them on a Toshiba SD-K700, Mintek DVD-1600 and one Cheap Apex player and they all worked well. I have not included any audio. I started out to use VCD, but decided to spring for the DVR-A05 when my project grew larger than expected. Home video is next! I don't recommend the software that comes bundled with the DVR-A05. I would just buy the bare drive and read recomendations and try demos before buying any software. The bundled Sonic MyDVD software is completely worthless and difficult to get removed from your system. $29.99 for per incident for Sonic OEM support and the boards are full of horror stories about this junk. Pioneer should be ashamed of putting out a drive with this very poor software package. | Hi. I received a Pioneer DRV-A05 for Christmas and have had nothing but problems. I can't burn any home movies to DVD with the MyDVD software. I've already captured the movie and when I try to burn it to a DVD-RW it'll get through most of the Audio part and then it crashes and my system reboots. I'm running XP Home on a AMD-900 processor. | I have to say that this writer has given me a lot of headaches until I found out that Nero is the cause of a LOT of my problems. When burning in DVD-video mode it uses UDF-1.05 which is not very compatable with stand alone dvd players. Instead use UDF DVD and select UDF-1.02. | Office Max has the 4X if they are out of the 2X. The drive I got was the Cendyne DVR-105 (was spose to be the 104). I had the guy at one Office Max call his other stores till one had it (1 store of 3 had it). I would recomend checking if you have the stores in your town. After rebates its about $170 (I got mine for $140 since they let me use a $30 off $150 coupon). | I bought it last monday. first I used firmware 1.00 & nero 5.5.9.14 & the burned disc would only play on my mustek dvd-player & not in my jvc xv-521 Then used nero 5.5.10 . now the disc only play in my JVC but not in the mustek. Tried several modes in nero (DVd-video ; udf ; udf-iso) Then did the firmware update to 1.21 & reïnstalled Nero 5.5.9.14 A no al works great. It even burns good on cheap princo 2x (maxell manufactered ID). (sony-dru500a can't do this wright for playback on a philips dvdplayer) I experimenting a week now, and I'm very pleased with it. score for me is 9 (were to buy 4x DVD-R in belgium or Aachen (germany) ?) | Well i have wait the 1.21 firmware upgrade to say what i think. After burnt lost DVD-R what did i see? AO5 is sold as DVD writer 4X for all and at good price. What is the reality. - works ok on very expensive DVD-R listed by Pioneer. - Not work in 4X on other DVD-R 4X. - Not work in 2X on common DVD-R (i dont speak of the lowest price!). - Works random in 1X on common DVR-R. Works bad with several DVD burnt softwares especially the famous Nero even in 5.9.17 and new 5.10 release. In fact the AO4 seems much more compatible (and in 2X more comaptible) especially if you have the good idea to not do the firmware upgrade to 1.33 AO5 seems NOT be a STANDARD DVD-R writer as it s firmware accept a limited certified DVD-R. So its not a product for ALL people but more for companies or administrations which can drop money in medias as they want. Too bad to discover that AFTER i bought it. Hear sirens of Pioneer marketing was an error. Because burning in 1X (i have no other choice) takes 1 hour and CDR is finally faster to burn same data volume. | Just to recap my earlier comment. I've had this drive for over 6 weeks now. No problems so far. There's a lot of cheap 2X DVDR's that is compatable to A05 flooding the market now . In Australia I've tried Melody and Datastream 2X costing about $2.70(US$1.50) that burns at 2X with Nero without any hacks. Prices are coming down fast with bulk purchases. I would not bother with any firmware hacks at this stage 'cos there's not much of a price difference between 1X and 2X media and 1X DVDR are fast disappearing. Burning 2X on 1X DVD is risky and is not reccommended unless you're stuck with a few hundred of them. I've had no problems with Princo DVDRW. My firmware is ver 1.00. My advice is to wait for cheap 2X and 4X media to appear (very soon) and NOT change your firmware unless you have major problem with a lot of medias. | Hi, I have A05 for a week and all works fine. I burned with That's Write DVD-R at 1x and with Princo 2x without any problems. I tried some movies and this works fine on the Samsung standalone DVD Player of a friends of mine, but they don't work on my Panasonic NV-VHD1 standalone DVD Player. I think becouse I burned them with Nero in DVD-Video mode, now i try to do the same in DVD-UDF mode. I'm waiting for the new firmware...
