| I got my Pioneer A05 about 3 weeks ago and has worked find. I updated the firmware and it increased writing speed to 2X on pioneer DVD-R. I used Nero Burning Rom 5.5.10 and Nero Vision. They worked but could not view the movies on either of my DVD players (GE and Sony). I went to Nero's web site on 10 Feb 03 and noticed they had updates to both software programs. | I Just bought Pioneer DVR-105 from Office Max. Came with Nero, My DVD ,Win DVD and 1 dvd rw. I'v Had no problems with the drive. made 10 dvd's using nero and Fujifilm dvd-r disk. The Fujifilm dvd-r disk burn at 2x Can't find 4x disk yet. As far as firmware I'm not going to mess with it because every thing is working fine. ( If it's not broke don't fix it). | Had my Pioneer a05 for about a month now. Burnt 3 coasters in my first day and then realised that it was because I had the wrong settings on my Burning Software. Once corrected, I have had no problems what soever. I'm using unbranded inkjet-printable-surface Riteks (although a cover that came with them said they were DATASAFE!). The burnt media plays fine in my Panasonic RV20 !!!!!!!!!! This is a DVD player that won't play CDR's, SVCD's but will play Silver surface CDRW VCD's. | I bought this burner and I bought a 25 pack of generic ritek disks from www.shop4tech.com. This burner wouldn't even recognize the ritek discs, much less burn them. I bought some fuji dvd-r and it burns them well. They really need some cheap media for this burner, or an updated website with all the media that's been tried out with this burner. | Just bought this unit on recommendation of this forum. Decided against the sony because of speed. So far I have burned 3 discs without a problem - using verbatim. Will soon be trying the cheaper brands. Bought from Tigerdirect and it came with fw version 1.21 which as of 1/4/03 was the latest. One annoyance was that the documentation on having to set the region code to 1 was lacking and confusing. There was software on the Pioneer web site for this purpose but the software claimed to be compatible with different models and not intended for the a05. It worked anyway. The software indeed sucks but for that of Pinnacle Systems. Overall this gets an 8 - would have been a 10 for not the software and installation problem. | I have had DVR-A05 for more than 3 months now, during the time I had about 11 failures in burning my discs. Nine cases were caused by using Nero and DVDXcopy, two were caused by bad discs. Taking into account that I have now burned more than 100 discs, most of my failure happened when I was experiementing with different medias and disc burning software. | OK, Reality check... I just made the post below, damning the Pioneer DVR-105. I retract my statement. I purchased some TDK media and used my Ulead software to burn another disk. It worked fine on my computer, a laptop, and a PS2. It wouldn't work with my Toshiba SD 3109 player (several years old). I've taken photograps of the TDK media and Memorex media (and the Pioneer/CenDyne box). The photo on the left shows you what the media packages look like. The photo in the center shows the TDK media successfully burned. See what looks like a normal disk pattern (nice and even looking, you can see what was burned, and what wasn't). The Memorex media is on the right. You will see how foggy looking it gets, and see a band part way through (if you look closely I put a green arrow to the darker band). This Memorex media appears to not function with the DVR-105. | Bought a CenDyne DVR-105, which is the Pioneer DVR-105 drive, from Statples. Final Price was $120 (after rebates and store coupons). I felt "How could I go wrong?" Man, was I wrong! I installed the drive in my P4-2.5Ghz machine (512MB RAM/120GB Hard Drive). I updated the firmware (after running the Pioneer firmware detection program to confirm it was a real Pioneer drive - which it was) from version 1.00 to 1.21 (latest as of late December). Burned the included no-name DVD-RW with no problem. The drive didn't come with any DVD-R media, but I had bought a pack of Memorex disks. Using ULEAD, It appeared to burn (said it completed successfully), but it would not work on my Toshiba DVD player, and it died after about 40 minutes in the DVR-105 itself. I then tried the Sonic MyDVD program (Comes with the Drive), which complained about "Sense Code (3 73 03) - Power Calibration Area Error - Sequential write". And next tried the NeroVision Express that came with the drive (no-MPEG2 support). So bottom line is two tries to burn a Memorex DVD-R and two coasters; both of which were attempted at 1X rate only. I see so many people with good results, and so many with horrible results. No consistancy! If I can ever get this drive working, I'd love it (all I want is a DVD-R for home movies), and I'm not out a bunch of money at $120, but I've wasted an entire weekend messing with this! Buyer Beware! | Bought the DVR-A05 when first came out. Came with Firmware version 0.52. Tried Optodisk 1x -RW media and failed to write every single time. Tried Princo Data/Video Blue/Silver 1x -RW media and 11 of 25 failed to write. Tried Princo Data/Video Purple/Silver 1x -R media and 1 of 5 failed. Not sure what happened. Had 12 successful writes and out of the last 13, only 3 successful writes on the Princo -RW media. I will update the firmware and try again. From what I have read, Ritek is the media for this burner. | Bought this drive about two weeks ago. Instaled all the software that came with it(sonic,easy cd etc).Burnt 28 discs so far (wedding videos for customers)1 coaster(bad Disc). Have used 1x,2x,4x ranging from £0.49 to £4.49 (old system was an E20 which only accepted £4.49 verbatim discs). Cannot fault this drive as it not only quarters my authoring time but halves my media price (discplanet 4x £2.25). Have also tried pinnacle impression, ulead dvd workshop and studio 8 and the only difference is the encoder, DVD workshop so far being the best. I would recomend this drive to anyone who wants to film,edit and author their own movies to dvd. Dont know about copying as Ive yet to try this. | I have had this drive for about a month now and have yet to have a problem. It works perfectly with Nero 5.5.10.0 as well as with Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0. I have been using cheap princo 1x media off of ebay and have yet to have a coaster. I am not going to bother installing the new firmware. I also got this drive cheap because of a $100 mail in rebate(to bad it was CDN dollars). I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone in the market for one. It is both cheap and reliable. | I have the Cendyne version of this drive, but it shows up on all of my software as the Pioneer. (A good thing!) Firmware is 1.00, and unless I have problems, I won't upgrade it. I've heard rumors that people are working on hacked firmware for this drive, which would be a welcome thing as it appears the firmware is limiting our media choices. Keep checking firmware-flash.com I guess. The drive was $150 ($250 - $50 Staples rebate - $50 infamous Staples coupon.) You can't beat that, especially since the Sonys are running about $200 more than that. All I wanted to do was burn DVD-R's anyhow. It appears to be doing that just fine. I've tried the DVD-RW that came with the drive, and a DVD-R I had lying around. Both burned flawlessly with Nero 5.5.9.14. I installed the latest ASPI drivers too. Both discs - the RW and the R - worked perfectly in all of my DVD players. (Sampo, Apex, and Toshiba). My laptop DVD spent a good 30-40 seconds chewing on it before it decided to play the discs, but once it got started it was fine. The big test will be with the cake of Ritek media I have coming next week. If all goes smoothly, this drive will be worth every penny. Bottom line: good drive, does what it's supposed to. | ive only used ritek dvd-rs with this burner, and no problems whatsoever. however, the only burning software ive used is nero, and again, no problem. i am using nero 5.5.8.10, which is much better that the software that came with the drive. so far, so great. ive burned 30+ discs with no problems. ive also had no problems burning cd-rs, no matter what brand ive throw at it. all around, a great burner. i love it!! Roxio 5 with the latest patches works perfect with this drive. ************************************************************* I installed the software that came with it, which was Nero Express, Sonic MyDVD, and WinDVD, and one plain white dvd-rw. Nero Express is a total piece of crap, it wouldnt even see the media. Sonic MyDVD I havent tested yet. WinDVD is cool thats fine. I have a copy of Roxio EZCD version 5, after installing all the updates, (some updates came out just 2 weeks ago) in total I installed 3 patches from roxio, then tried to burn a dvd-r data disc, and it worked like a charm at 2x, I used Memorex 2x DVD-R version 2.0 media and it tested fine. | had this writer for over a week and only had a problem when using nero to burn dvd films, even in dvdifo mode, switched to discjuggler and since then had no problem doing dvd- data-- mp3 dvd films etc used ritek for dvds and cheapo bulkpak for data-- burnt dvd`s work on standalone dvd players- pioneer philips panasonic(ritek disks only)and samsung with no problem -burnt over 30 disks and not one coaster- also burns at 16speed cdrs -nero works ok on writing vcds svcds and dvd data but again not foolproof burning dvd movies well recommended. I bought this drive for it to write 4x with 4x disks or 2x disks to write 2x. So far I bought 100 disks of different brands and only recognizes them and writes at 1x. So I went ahead and bought a Sony dru500a, though hard to find, I managed to get one. So far, the sony flat out ROCKS and I haven't looked back to Pioneer since. Finally sold both of my Pioneers on ebay. I can finally burn a full dvd in 16 minutes compared to 1 hour with the Pioneer. 8mb buffer for the Sony vs 2MB for the Pioneer. Well you decide. The pioneer 105's price maybe attractive, but I'd rather get the Pioneer A04 over the A05 any day. Unless Pioneer puts out an updated firmware, (According to Pioneer's customer service) I highly doubt it. Why? Pioneer released updated firmware v1.33 for A04 only to cripple the drive's abilities and then the 1.0 firmware for the a05 when it was released to limit the a05's abilities. I am sorry, but I am not going wait 1 hour for it to write on a $5 TDK disk while on the other hand, I can use an 80 cent Ritek (which is faily good quality) with my Sony and write much faster. | Got this drive at OfficeMax for $179.99. DVR-AO5 DVR-105 Installed it in less than 10 minutes. Burnt first DVD in less than one hour. Using Apple G4-DP with OS X the entire process with iMovie and iDVD is totally effortless. And the results are picture perfect! Motion menus work GREAT! This drive is actually a Cendyne that was manufactured by Pioneer. I could not find any 4X DVR Media locally and they want just too much for it on the net so I will just wait until the price comes down. They should be around a buck a piece by years end. I also have burnt Audio CD with it at 16X and Audio CDRW at 8X. It will be great now to back up all my data on one DVD-RW disc! I remember about 2 years ago when I got into burning Audio CD's and made a coaster a plenty until drives and software improved. I am actually encoding another DVD in the background while writing this. I really don't need all the software that came with this drive. Two more coasters. The ATA cable that came with it was a nice bonus. Now I can put my forth drive in! This is a great drive and I recommend it to anyone who wants to get into burning DVD's.
