| Unfortunately I own two of these. The first one went out 3 months to the day after I bought it. After finally convincing SONY that it was indeed bad, they repaired and sent it back promptly (I paid shipping one way). But I was dumb enough to buy another one to replace it while Sony fixed the first one. The new DRU-540A has already gone bad (2 weeks old) -- IT WILL NOT WRITE AT ALL. I had only burned a few DVDs on it because I also purchased a Plextor 712UF (external) which so far is a MUCH better writer. I'm burning DVDs for sale, and I had no end of problems with my products when I was burning them on the DRU-540A; always bad sectors. Now that I am using the Plextor I have almost no problems with my DVDs. I wish I had known sooner that SONY was the cause of my problems. I've spent hundreds of hours and dollars trying to resolve compatibility issues. NEVER AGAIN--no more SONY products for me! Comments posted by Paul Koehler from United States, December 29, 2004. | I used this drive for two months with good results on all kinds of media. After that it became defective and stopped burning completely. It was one day shy of the three-month free tech support limit. After I finally convinced Sony that it was indeed bad, they asked me to send it in for repair. They say they will have it back to me in no more than 2 weeks. In the meantime, I ordered another DRU-540A because I knew it would work in my computer with same software (NERO), and also a Plextor 712UF (external). I just started using both of those--they seem fine. The Sony DRU-540A is extremely fast--burns@8X - 7 minutes for a 55 minute video. Also reads fast, I think faster than the first one. | I've had this drive for two months now and it's been very good to me. Out of 60+ DVDs I've written I've only had one coaster even using the cheapest of the cheap media. The burns have been more compatable than my previous drive (some TDK) while using the same discs from the same spindle. I mainly got it as a cheap replacement ($90 after rebate that only took one month) but I was glad that it has been a wonderful drive. The only drawback is the CPU usage while burning. It doesn't seem to change whether burning at 2x or 8x, +R or -R, so I wonder why it does that. It's not a problem since I'm usually just surfing the web anyway. | I agree with the first posting. I have yet to be able to write to a dvd+rw with this sony drive. I am using Pinnacle to as a capture device and Studio 8 for the software and still I am experiencing the same problems as this other person. I have tried to download new driver information to update drivers, added Widnows 2000 SP 4, have done diagnostics on the drive, and now I am at whits end..... | This is a very bad drive, I had a terible experiance with it on three different computers. Sometimes it will read what it wrote other times it won't.. On the rewrite.. that was a joke.. I formated the rewritable dvd using the incd .. then wrote the cd.. verified that it can be read.. then took it out cheked it on another dvd writer it was UNREADABLE.. then put it back in the sony drive.. it started getting formated.. data was lost.. Plus it will not read any of my cdrw or cdr cd's.. this drive is a joke.. going back to COMP USA.. B.T.W... 3 different computers & 3 different OS.. Virus free..
