| If anyone wants this drive, buy it from here. $114 + $5 shipping. This where I bought mine from, although when I bought mine three weeks ago, it was $10 more. I've used Memorex (Ricoh) DVD+R 4x and Fuji (Ritek) DVD-R 2.4x with no problems at all yet. Haven't tried CD-R(W), have a faster CDR drive on a different machine. Great drive for the price. OEM, though, so no software, just a box. | hi guys, ive got the nec 1300 combi writer and i think its great, however starting to get problems with it that ive never had before. The problem is my dvd's are starting to jumpduring play on dvd players, never had this problem before and still using the same disks Octron dvd-r. Im using shrink and decrypter with nero, with 1.07 Firmware. Is there anyone out there that could tell me if they is a new version of the firmware and if they is were do i get it from. my system is Amd athlon 2.8, 1 gig of mem, ge force 128mb graphics and 120 gig partioned HD. | I have NEC1300 since 2 weeks. I have firmware 1.07v3 from herrie (hacked version).it burns eveithing.... buy it , is not expensive, is not noisy, is working perfect. | I have tried everything except 1.08 firmware. Drive is recognized by Windows 2000 as working properly but NO disc will show in drive. CD, CD-R, DVD-R, DVD (store bought). | I ve bought nd 1300 a week ago and have burned Dvd-r's and cd's as well as a dvd-rw without any problem. I could also read cd's that other dvd's or cd's could not read. | Had the OEM version of this for 2 weeks and its been excellent so far. At first it didn't want to know with the bulpaq 4x dvd-r media I had bought with it, but after a firmware upgrade (from 1.05 to 1.07) it works fine with everything I've tried so far (no coasters), and burns at the correct full speed as well(unlike the Sony drives which tend to only burn at 2x with a lot of 4x media for some reason). Ive tried a couple of expensive disks but mostly cheap unbranded stuff and all work fine so far. One word of caution when upgrading the firmware though, make sure the drive is set as the secondary (slave) one, or just make a bootdisk and do it in DOS to begin with. I made the mistake of trying the upgrade with the windows installer while the drive was set as master and after the intintial faliure I thought I'd killed it as it was effectively dead to windows, but after some looking around I found the solution and was able to fix the problem and upgrade from there with no probs at all since. | I've just installed my nec 1300a dvd writer using datasafe media 4x and i have no problems at all.I use dvd shrink 2.3 and copytodvd to burn.It takes about 1 hr to encode and 14mins to burn not a bad investment for £109.00. 10/10. | Hold it, Jimmy,it happened to my too,all you need to do is go to Nero (Ahead) web site ( it sucks, but you'll find it)and find Update, I'm sure you are running version 5.5 something, after update your Nero will become 5.5.10, that's it, you have to re enter your serial number then voila...turn Nero on...your Nec 1300 will be right there. | Bought this Drive and installed it under my win 2k system (Duron 1.1) installed it as secondary master, it appears under windows as a NEC drive, but is not recognised by Nero (the progam it came with), all Nero brings up is 'image writer'. I have installed the ASPI from microsoft and still no joy, i've also updated the firmware (although not to 1.06). Any ideas before I attempt to take it back to the shop? | Got the drive a week ago (Firmware 1.06)and have been using Princo 4x DVD-R with the white glossy back on them. Fried one disc out of twenty purely because I was burning disc to disc on the fly and the original stuffed out with a read problem. Have an interesting problem with Nero 6 power calibration errors on 3 out of twenty discs which I put aside because I thought they were wrecked. Went back to them to see if I could burn and they worked fine, so no idea what causes the power calibration error. Also the discs seem to burn in about 25mins at both 2X and 4X burn speeds so haven't quite figured that out. Power calibartion error doesn't happen at 2x. I pretty happy so far. | I have had this writer for a week now. I have successfully used Memorex DVD+R/DVD-RW and Philips DVD+RW. I have also been able to play the DVDs on both of my DVD players. I even made a couple of VCD with this drive. I have had no problems at all. I know that the panasonic 106 gets better reviews, but I am not sure it is worth the $40 price difference. | Had this baby for about a month now. Burned dozens of DVD's and it works great. I've had a couple coasters but that's because I was copying on the fly and the source discs had errors, so what can you do? The only reason this gets a 9/10 was because it was incompatible with some really cheap generic discs (don't remember exact brand); gave me a "disc error" everytime I tried to burn with them. | I've using Cendyne 1300D made by Nec (mfg in May 2003), with DVD X Xpress and Verbatim Datalife Plus -R media for over a week now, back up 4 movies (all Disney latest ones, Disney always tough to back up)and I've been very impressed with this one!Very quiet, and no coaster yet! Installed was a fluke, and back up experience is no painfull at all! I'm going to try some CompUSA generic media and see how it goes! | This recorder seems to be rather sensitive about *reading* CDs, and I have found that it has particular problems with CDs equipped with adhesive stickers on which contrastful graphics or text has been written. Hold a CD like this up towards the light and you will find that you can see the graphics through it. I have several such CDs that work fine on other players. | Finally got this drive up and running! Windows XP never recognized the drive properly becuase my IDE controller was running off of some generic driver, causing me to burn coasters on almost everything. Ever since updating my IDE controller, I have yet to throw away a disk. I've been burning fine with HP DVD+RW and cheapo CompUSA branded Princos. Using Herrie's firmware 1.05v11. | This DVD-Writer Rocks!!!. So far I am able to use the DVD (DVD-R) on Sony and Daewoo DVD player. I used Ulead VideoStudio 6.0 for capturing the video (Directly to mp2), Ulead movie factory 7.0 for generating ISO image and Nero 6.0 for burining DVD. Note:- I tried burning DVD directly using Ulead movie factory 7.0 but the app crashed (Off-course the DVD got spoiled). Used Memorox DVD-R. | Works great. Flashed to 1.07, and Using DVD X Copy Xpress and Ritek G04 -R (also successfully did Memorex -R and -RW. My APEX AD1200 and the APEX 3-carousel player play these perfectly. 1 coaster out of first 4 I burned, but that was my fault because WindowsXp power management interfered and shut my monitor off during the burn. The only bad thing is that this drive doesnt have buffer underrun technology, so make sure screen savers and power management is off and you are set to go. Note: Tired most dvd to dvd software out there, and the DVD X Copy Xpress is a no brainer, 2 click solution. So far have crammed a 6.5GB DVD onto one 4.7GB -R DVD, no quality difference, and didnt need to do any editing or tinkering with files at all. | my old computer had a duron 1200 which was so slow ripping 1.3x (88mins) and 2-3 hours for clone dvd compilation and would only burn at 1 speed. So I went out baught a cheap upgrade of AMD Athlon 2600xp and Gigabyte GA-7vt600 Motheboard. Now rips at 5x-7x (5 - 10 mins for a dvd) and burns 4x (15 mins)to both digimedia and princo 4x media with latest 1.07v2 firmware. Very nice Comments posted by Greg from Other, September 21, 2003. | Bought this drive yesterday. Also bought a 10-pack of cheap Princo DVD-R discs. First thing I did was to flash the new firmware 1.07 and burn a couple of discs using Nero 6 (with update patch i.e. 6.0.0.15) at burn speed 2x. Nero does not report any errors during burning session but it is not possible to read large files (>50 Mb) from the discs afterwards (gets a cyclic redundancy error). Also tried a Princo disc in DVDDecryptor, but with the same result; the movie runs fine in a minute and then it just hangs. A wierd thing is that the disc can be read on my friends old Philips DVD-ROM but not on my NEC on which it was burned. Very strange. I'll return the crap and go for a Plextor PX-708A instead. | how's this for a difference...i bought one oem on the web...thing didnt read any cds...returned it...so i bought a Verbatim VBTDVDL4A in bestbuy for $150. turns out the drive is really an NEC ND-1300a when you install it...awesome! flashed the firmware and works great. one slight prob i had was it would freeze on my CompUSa Princo's. They are supposed to be 1x but try to burn at 2x and freeze. So to solve this I just detect write speed and do a simulation burn the first time I use the burner when I turn on my pc and it works fine from then on.
