| I've had this DVD burner about a week and a half now (paid $160). I've burned a 25-pack of Princo 4x DVD-Rs, about 20 or so Memorex DVD+Rs, and several DVD-RWs I bought from allmediaoutlet.com. The conclusion: EVERYTHING WORKS PERFECTLY. I upgraded to the 1.06 firmware the day I got the drive (before they removed it) and it's been smooth sailing. My only complaint is that it seems to want to burn the DVD-RWs at 1x no matter what I try. I suspect this is a firmware issue, but not that big of a deal since I hardly burn DVD-RWs (got them to test, really). Comments posted by riskable from Other, August 05, 2003. | Hi, Bought this drive a few days ago from Novatech for £128 with some Novatech DVD-R and DVD-RW's. The drive is fantastic although it does need the 1.06 firmware as it only sees the DVD-RW as x1 with revision 1.05. The first RW I burnt didnt work correctly when using the Nero wizard so I used the manual ISO option and it worked a charm. Now have 4 Gb free on my HDD! Will try converting DivX to DVD later. Pete. | Bought my NEC ND-1300A barebone drive on 7/31/03 for $169 shipped. Already had a 10-pack of CompUSA DVD-Rs at home waiting for this drive to arrive. Installed the unit in place of my old DVD-ROM drive with no trouble at all. Used SmartRipper to back up my 2 purchased Derek Flynt DVDs to the Hard Drive and removed Macrovision (I have to run my DVD player through my VCR because my TV does not have input jacks other than the coaxial antenna). Then used DVDShrink to open the HD files then re-author & back up*. Re-burned the DVDShrink output files onto my CompUSA DVD-R discs using Nero Burning ROM 6 - NEVER A PROBLEM AT ALL!! My stand-alone DVD players are an Apex AD-5131 & AD-703. I can now enjoy the movies I PAID FOR without the annoyance of Macrovision! I have since burned a total of 7 cheap CompUSA DVD-Rs on the NEC ND-1300a with ZERO PROBLEMS! This is the drive to get! | Got this burner (oem version) a couple of weeks ago for less than usd 180.00. Updated firmware with hacked version and presto, it burns the cheap princo @ 4x. Of course, it also burns the expensive media too. I have burned using various brands of + R, - R, and +RW. Have not tried any - RW yet. So far, my TV top dvd players and played everything. If you are not going to upgrade the firmware, you might want to get a different burner that can handle the cheaper media. If you are going to upgrade the firmware, it is a great burner at a fantastic price. I used the hacked firmware cd boot disk and it worked flawlessly. Just make sure you know where your nec is (eg. primary or secondary ide, master or slave device, etc) so that you can issue the proper commands. | Have the DVD writer for about two week. Have burned about 2 dozen dvds, both data and movies. Media tried was Platinum (all good), Storguest(all good), Maxell(all good) Princo - this was my problem. In the groups i read that they where suppoerted but i got illegal media error. The nec firmware update was removed from their site so i tried the hacked firmware from http://herrie.rpc1.org (If you are unfamiliar with firmwares i DON'T advice this! Stick to the original!) This recognized the princo media but i got skipping errors on some of the dvd. I now have 4 dvd toasters discs to add to my collection, however burning with a slower speed (x2) solved the problem. | burned and re-burned several DVD+RW disks "Memorex" All worked fine on first burn. got one good DVD+R and four BAD ones(Maxell), these disks work fine in a computer DVD-ROM but can not be read in a TV-DVD player. I am very pissed, the company CenDyne says their drive won't burn DVD movies but the box says it will, LIERS! I can't set the book type in Nero looks like a firm ware problem but NEC pulled the upgrade from their site. CynDyne does not have a phone number, now I know why. | I had updated my drive to 1.06 and destroyed the firmware of my drive :( But with the flashtool from a hacked firmware and the original 1.05 *.bin File i reactivated zhe drive and it worked fine like before. | dear customers, the firmwareupdate (NEC ND13_106.exe) we released on 18 of July for retail / bulk version ND-1300A damaged in some cases during update procedure the device. NEC has already removed fimwareupdate until error is fixed If you already have installed firmware version 1.06 (NEC ND13_106.exe) successful, there will be no problem with it. | Danger!! Danger!! do not flash your drive with the new firmware if you are using Windows XP, I did and it destroyed the drive!!! Have been in touch with NEC and they Know about the problems Xp users are having, they have removed the firmware from thier site, but I still found a way to get it!, which alarmed them!!so a gave them the link that RAVAGE posted, this should go dead but has not at the time of this posting!!!I think they intend to replace the damaged drives, after they discovered the flaw in the firmware, and after a lot of phone calls from upset customers! | I got this writer about 1 week ago. For the first few days I was having nothing but problems with it. I was backing up DVDs with DVDShrink and then burning directly with Nero. All the DVDs I made skipped, some a little and some were unwatchable. I was ready to take it back. Now I seem to have the correct method down. 1) Rip entire DVD (file setting) with SmartRipper to one of your harddrives. 2) Open in file mode with DVDShrink, take anything out that you dont need and compress the movie and/or extras if needed. 3) Save the output from DVDShrink to a DIFFERENT harddrive. 4) Open up DIR with files from DVDShrink with Nero and burn. 5) Enjoy skip free backup copy! The other issue I had with this drive is not being able to recognize or write to certain types of media or write to them at the rated 4x speed. Well just today I upgraded the firmware to version 1.06 and am very pleased. I can now write to all my media at 4x with no problems. You can down load the firmware here. http://www.necd.de/software/1049_Firmware_ND-1300A_106.zip When you run the update it warns you against using it on an OEM version of the drive. My drive is an OEM version (a producer 44 -/+) and I ignored the warning and had no problems. All in all I would say that the drive works excellent now that I learned the right way to use it and have updated the firmware. | Bought this drive about 2 weeks ago and it has performed flawlessly, but you HAVE TO UPDATE THE FIRMWARE TO USE MOST MEDIA (see below). This is very important, NEC disables the ability to use cheap media in the bios by default, so you have to download and flash the bios to a user-hacked bios which enables not only cheap media, but also full speed burning on most brands. I had researched the drive before I bought it, and before I burned anything I flashed the bios...and since then I've burned about 10 DVDs, all were perfect and all were at full speed. So far I've used: FujiFilm DVD+RW 2.4x Memorex DVD+R 4x ..and all the research I've seen indicates the new bios works great with most cheap media - I happened to get a great deal on the above or else I'd try the cheap stuff. The discs played back perfectly in my Pioneer DV-C503 and an Apex 5131. Overall this is a great burner and for $170 it is an awesome value - remember this is a DUAL format burner. | I've had it a week now and backed up 5 DVDs. No problems writing to Imation DVD+R (5 so far) a purple-blue bottom and my JVC standalone DVD player can read them too. Also mane a few CD-Rs with cheap silver disks and they work fine too. Burning is a tricky business... Do a fresh reboot and kill everything you don't need running. | I have had this writer for a little while now ,and keep reding that people r having problems with nero .I use a free version of instant cd/dvd i got from a magazine ,and it never says illegal media ,or anything else. It will even write on princo disks ,unfortunately they wont play in the pc or my pioneer dv350. I have tried four different disks so far .. | I purchased this from CCL and have nothing but problems can write to 4x DVD-R disks without a problem tested some zero defex and these worked at 4x so bought some, and can only write these at 2x speed unable to write datawrite as these are princo disks and currently not supported. Originally I got Illegal media for princo disks, and Power Calibration Error for the zero defex when trying at 4x, now after a full reinstall of xp and just the basic motherboard, graphics drivers and nero, i get an SCSI/IDE Command Error when attempting to write to the ZD disks. Speaking to CCL they say nothing wrong with drive not faulty, we have to wait for firmware upgrade, what they going to do if that still doesn't fix the problems - fob customers off further.... | I am very satisfied. The burner did Meritline 4x DVD-R (Ritek G04), BeAll 4x DVD-R, Accu 4x DVD-R (LD) and Meritline DVD+R without any problems for my ancient ORION 337S DVD-player. | Just purchased this drive and backed up several Dvd's using the following software DVD2ONE and RecordNow without any problems.I have also used DVDLAB and RecordNow on several home movies without a problem.I have used the following disc without any problems so far.
