| The burner is ok. I have burned CD-R, CD-RW and DVD+R. I bought 10 DVD-R Intenso Discs but the Nec don't want them. Only burned a Verbatim DVD+R and a Medianca DVD+R. Both without problems. | I brought one of these last week, at the same time I purchased 25x One 4 X DVD-R's. All excited I decided to try and burn a couple of small AVI's as a trial. After Ulead MovieFactory 2 had performed its oh so slow but magical conversion on the AVI's the software tried to write to the aforementioned disks and fell over with a media error. Thanks to the folks on this site who have taken the trouble to relate their experiences with this writer I was able to indentify that I had the v.1.05 bios and was able to easily locate v.1.07. Once the bios was flashed this became the burner of my dreams, I know firends who have Sony and Panasonic burners and this compares well. Be warned tho, flashing bios can lead to heart failure - dont do it unless you really have to. Also make sure that you have a retail\\bulk writer before using v1.07. The OEM writer requires a diferent flash. v1.16 I think. Check all this information yourself before attempting an upgrade. SPECIALLY IF RUNNING WINDOWS XP!!!! | Problem with firmware version 1.06 & nero 6 my brand new NEC 1300a OEM won`t write to my B grade Whitelabel 4x discs becuase they are illegal & I can only attempt a 2x burn... but its ok I found hacked firmware 1.07 from Herries firmware site http://herrie.rpc1.org/ I am now able to select 4x & burn onto my whitelabel discs at 4x where previously with the NEC 1.06 firmware out of the box I got illegal type error and could only select 2x. whats more I completed my first burn on these cheap B grade disc at 4x successfully hooray! I previously posted about the first firmware 1.06 which destroyed my drive, well NEC were great and replace it with a loan unit, until they fixed the firmware, now if you have flashed your firmware and failed, use the DOS version of firmware 1.06, it should fix the drive, it did for me! and it does add support for cheaper media, though I do recommend Ritek dye DVD's no problems with these! I now have 2 of these drives(had to send the loan unit back), so I bought another one for my backup's. It's a great writer and a lot of other writers are based on it. i.e TDK, Plextor to name just a few, so buy with confidence. Comments posted by GABO from Other, September 03, 2003. | Had this burner for about 2 weeks now on firmware 1.05 and useing easy cd/dvd 6, and it would not burn a "Datawrite -R dvd, only got error messages. | Strange.. burned my first homebrew DVD video w/Ulead Videostudio. Jittered and locked up. Burned a second copy using NERO. Same results. Media is "Legacy 4x" from NewEgg. Wouldn't burn these disks at all without an updated firmware. Now the strange part... the DVDs play just fine on cheap stand-alone player -- they only lock on on the 1300A. | The new firmware vsn. 1.07 linked above (which had been emailed to a member by NEC, reportedly) was downloaded and installed under Windows XP on a non-OEM NEC ND-1300A which had previously had firmware 1.06 installed. The upgrader firmware 1.07 flasher was downloaded from... http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mcmntl/files/Firmware_ND-1300A_WIN107.zip Problem after installation of 1.06 was that the drive wouldn't burn DVD-R's using Nero's new 6.x version software. It had worked pretty well under the vsn. 1.05 that came in the drive. However, vsn. 1.06 was supposed to add in the cheaper DVD-Rs. Now the drive doesn't show up under Windows XP at all. What can be done to re-install 1.05 or save the drive. It appears to be dead now. This seems to be a similar problem to the old issue where the first edition of 1.06 killed drives, if flashed under Windows XP in some configurations. NEC pulled the first edition of 1.06, then they fixed the problem and re-issued the 1.06 flasher. Now it appears that there is a 1.07 version that has cropped up, but we don't see it on many sites yet. Of course, it seems to have a problem or two itself... | I have had this machine for about 2 months now, had a few problems with cheap discs, but other media I have tried verbatim and swirl, worked fine, perfect backups everytime, I have just updated the F/W and bought a single cheap disc and it burned fine, and it plays fine on my stand alone dvd player, so I was paying £40.00 for 25 disc, now with the F/W update I can get 50 discs for that price, so I am now happy with my writer...... | just some comment about trouble I encountered with this writer's software, and how I resolved the problems: (1) Nero couldn't be updated because some WNASPI DLL in the Nero directory could not be written. This was due to my CD writer's InCD tool that was running in the background. Since you can't disable InCD once it's running, I had to de-install it. Note: Killing the process wouldn't unlock the DLL! Uninstall and reboot. (2) NeroVision Express is handy but it welcomed me with a silly error when starting to transcode. I went to www.ahead.com, searched around (navigational nightmare, that site!), and in the sitemap I found a link to a NeroVision "update". It just steps up some sub-levels of the version number but I got rid of that transcode error. The writer, however, seems solid quality to me - but I've not burnt many DVDs so far. | Have done a lot of burning with Roxio ECD 6. Works with no problem with Verbatim RW+ and R+. Have done som burning with Nero 5.5. It also works fine. | Bought this burner 2 weeks ago and updated it with firmware 1.06. Burner now will write to Princo, Ritek, and other cheap media without a problem. Other problems I'm having is the burner read speed seems to be locked at 2x while I try to rip using dvd decryptor. I have yet to figure out why. When I got it I threw it into a USB 5.25" external case and it has worked perfectly, whether it be -r or +r, cheapo or good media, this baby hums along producing flawless dvds. | Bought this drive sme days ago, and had no experience with burning any Media so far :-( But i was reading all the comments in here so i think i had 2 upgrade the firmware first, before burning any cheap media. | I bought it 2 weeks ago. Cfg: Asrock P4I45D+Cel 2.0+XP Prof+Nero 5.5.10.28. Write with quality DVD-R media (Verbatim, TDK, etc.) no problem.
