After the 1.0d firmware update, the drive started functioning much better with DVD media. I made three coasters out of six DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R disks on 1.0c. With 1.0d, five burns so far so good. The icing on the cake is the capability to burn CDR at 24x and CDRW at 10x and the large 8MB cache. This drive beats all others that are available in quantity at the moment in the Toronto area (Pioneer A04 and HP 200i). I user a Liteon LTD-165H DVD-ROM for my read drive, and all the successful burns from the 500 have been recognized correctly by it. Haven't tried DVD-video burn in a stand-alone DVD player as yet. Great first impression to SONY CORPORATION!! receive my dru500a on Friday November 8th after trying to find one for three weeks. Burnt two dvds and on Tuesday November 12 I flashed my firmware from 1.0c to 1.0d and my dru500a becomes a DW-U10A drive, whatever the heck that is. After emailing SONY support and calling them, the bottom line is they have no clue whatsoever and Friday November 15th I find out I have to ship the drive to SONY, wait another 3 - 4 weeks minimally for them to repair or replace the drive!! Kudos is all I can say! Believe it or not, I've purchased two sony products in my 40 years of living and based on this outcome, not to mention when I'll actually get my drive back, it will be my last!! They have no cross ship program, nothing at all and the level two support person I spoke with today, basically did not care at all! Lets keep Sony the number 1 electronics company and keep buying their stuff! Bad taste left after this and their support? What support? Nothing was even attempted and I don't care about the fact that the drive is new.. Wait for something else to come out and don't waste your time. Perhaps its an isolated problem, perhaps not, but flash the firmware for a dru500a with a manufacturer date of October 02, 2002 and I hope you have better luck... When you flash to 1.0d make sure you don't have virtual drive programs like Daemon-Tools or Alcohol running or it won't be able to flash. I'd try redownloading the firmware upgrade file if you got a weird firmware version. Make sure you click the check drive button first too. Comments posted by Morac from Other, November 14, 2002. Don't get me wrong, I love this drive. I've been having it for about 3 weeks now with no problems. Until the firmware 1.0d came out for it. I'm having trouble updating this firmware. When I run (500A510d.exe) and click on "Start Update" it restarts the pc. When it comes back on, it does the samething over and over every time I run the program and try to update the firmware. Just restarting without updating. I had to atleast restarted my pc about 30 times trying to get this thing to upgrade. I'm running Windows XP with SP 1. I've tried installing without the Service Pack, still no luck. Anyone know what could be causing this? Please email or reply to the post. Comments posted by ken from Other, November 14, 2002. I just bought my dru500a this past Friday, flashed the firmware last night and now my drive shows up as a DW-U10A and won't work.. I am working with Sony right now. The firmware update did state it was to flash my DRU500a to firmware version 1.0d, I don't know where the DW-U10A came in at and the firmware seemed like everything went okay until the reboot!! I have bought this drive and it burns +RW and -RW and +R and -R perfectly. On top of that I took the -R to Circuit City and played it in about 6 different model DVD Players and they all worked fine. There is only one thing to know, Call Sony and ask them for an updated list of which BLANK DVD's will work with the unit. Imation for instance has a problem because of the type of DYE on the blank DVD. This is most likely the cause of problems for most people. Sony told me to use TDK and it worked like a charm, EVERY TIME. 4$ each, the prices will come down further. Nice unit. I am a little sceptical of using the 1.00 disks. There is no mistery to this. Purchased the drive a few weeks ago. Tried Princo DVD-RW media with the drive - would not recognize (firmware v1.0c). I went out and purchased an Imation DVD-RW, a TDK DVD-RW and a Memorex DVD-RW - all were detected and burned properly. I use Nero v.5.5.9.17 I sold the Princo DVD-RW media and purchased Meritline's DVD+RW media in the 25-pack (http://www.meritline.com) and it works flawlessly. Since then I've upgraded to firmware v1.0d. I'm happy with the drive, since I've finally found media that works, and is fast (2.4x). All I need to do now is find some inexpensive DVD-R media that works at 2x or 4x.... :-) --> Jay Comments posted by Jay from Other, November 13, 2002. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Bought the DRU-500A today. I use it in combination with a Matrox RT2000. After initial problems with the MyDVD software ('encoder not available'), I decided to switch to the software that came with the RT2000: DVDit! That worked fine, and the result was an immediate GO! I used the enclosed Sony DVD+RW DPW47 which played without any problems on my Sony DVP-S7700 When I have more experience with different media I will return Lucien van Os Comments posted by Lucien van Os from Other, November 13, 2002. I am running test burns on the Media TEST PACK available at supermediastore.com This pack includes: 2pcs Ritek DVD-R, 2pcs SUPERMEDIA DVD-R, 2pcs DVDPRO DVD-R, 2pcs Optodisc DVD-R, and 2pcs Optodisc DVD-RW, Each in a Jewel Case. ALL of these disks are 1X. I have already confirmed the RITEK works WITHOUT ISSUE. I will run a test with 1 DVD-R of each make with the current original firmware, and then I will run the exact same tests with the firmware updated. I will post the results here and on the forum. Also, a co-worker also bought the 500A and has a 100-spindle of DVDPRO 2X media and he reports 32 successful burns AT DOUBLE SPEED! Comments posted by Resdog70 from Other, November 13, 2002. Minor Update: The reference to the success of the Memorex DVD+R with Nero buring an ISO ROM was wrong - it failed. But when retried using Vertias Recordnow with the same set of files it was a success. Go figure bad DVD or better software compatibility? As for Memorex DVD-RW v1.1, Nero does not see them and neither did RecordNow, any ideas? Seems Memorex-R/W media is not yet stable in certain combos. Screw it, stick with the Princo and find a good TV show, or pay 4-8x. Comments posted by Chucklez from Other, November 13, 2002. Rated this writer No rating. |

- At first I loved this writer (worked great with different dvd+rw brands). - Then I hated it. (made dvd+r coasters with different brands with different apps that apperently didn't support the sony with dvd+r media yet (does "unable to finalyze disc" sound familiar?) - Then I loved it when Nero fixed the dvd+r finalyzing issue in the 5.5.9.17 version. - Then I hated it again when I received my Princo 1x dvd-r media and made 6 coasters with 6 burns (writer quits writing after it has written between 3 to 4GB) - Now I love it again cause Sony released the 1.0d firmware. It fixed the writing bug with the Princo media. Well it fixed the writing bug only with that media... First I thought I had bad luck again cause Nero complained it couldn't finalyze the media. But I found out me dvd-rom drive could read it without a prob and my Playstation2 could read it too. (I tried to read the dvd+r coaster too, but without luck) DVDdecryptor writes the Primo dvd-r without a problem, but the Sony writer itself cannot read the dvd-r discs itelf. Other devices can. Every body that has write problems with the sony should try the firmware upgrade. Abd try if the disc works in another device. Comments posted by JustVodka from Other, November 12, 2002. I'm a complete n00b to all this VCD, DVD-R...etc world. I have long story about media and compatibily issues I've ran into. Here's my basic system config: PIII 1Ghz, 512MB ram, 60G HD. I am not fond of the pricing most retailers have for media so I started out persuing online vendors. So far, the best pricing for media I've found is www.allmediaoutlet.com. They sell Generic (probably Princo), Optodisc and Ritek. While Ritek media is their most expensive, I purchased a spindle of 10 DVD+RW for $42 including shipping. If you can afford to buy media in spindles of 25 or more, you get free shipping ($88.75 for a spindle of Ritek 25 DVD+RW = $3.55/DVD+RW). I had also purchased some generic 2x DVD-r media that was not recognized by my drive. Allmedia recommended I stick with the RITEK brand because of this issue. Because of the problems I had with the generic media, I broke down and went to Best Buy and picked up some Verbatim DVD+R and DVD-R media. I ran into some interesting media troubles with the Verbatim media too. The DVD+R media was recognized and would burn, but would nolonger be recognized by the DRU500a after burning was complete. The DVD-R media was not recognized by my drive as valid media. Further investigation on Verbatim's website showed there was a bad batch of DVD-R in the field and returns were being accepted by them. They're even shipping me replacement media ahead of time with a postage-paid return label (now how's that for service). Verbatim is also planning on having 4x DVD-R media available in December too. So far I've been very happy with the Ritek DVD+RW media I purchased from www.allmediaoutlet.com. No coasters with the supplied RecordNow software supplied with the drive or the 4.5 version of RecordNow MAX. FYI for all you STOMP RecordNow MAX users. Version 4.5 was just released last Friday. Works great with the drive. Also, I spoke with the people at Stomp and they said that the version of RecordNow supplied with the DRU500a is eligible for upgrade pricing ($35 for media, $25 if you download it). As other people have posted, the learning curve for media compatibility is expensive. Beyond the media compatibility problems, I'm very happy with my purchase. - Rob Comments posted by Rob from Other, November 12, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

Had this drive for a couple of weeks now. Nero burns DVD+R coasters, but works OK with DVD+RW. RecordNow has worked 100% of the time. Obviously Nero needs to be updated to fully support this drive. Media used so far: Laser DVD+R - no probs other than coasters due to Nero Laser DVD-R - 2 out of 3 discs tried were not recognised by drive, so I couldn't burn to them, but the other one works fine. I suspect dodgy media... Laser DVD-RW - no probs Laser DVD+RW - no probs Sony DVD+RW - no probs as you would expect Comments posted by Peka from Other, November 12, 2002. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

I just got this drive last Friday and so far have burned the Sony DVD+RW plus 2 TDK DVD+RW discs with no problem. I've also burned a few CD-RW and CD-R discs. I just installed the 1.0d firmware update located at http://sony.storagesupport.com/legalagreement.zulu?dlid=dvdrw/downloads/dru500a/FirmwareUpdateDRU500A.zip which is supposed to increase speed and media support. I haven't tried burning any DVD since then since I don't have any blanks, but CD-RW's still work fine. The only bad thing is that RecordNow DX and DLA software isn't available yet and MyDvd 4.5 seems non-existent even though its mentioned on the software quick start guide, but I've been using the latest Easy CD Creator (5.3.2.34) without any problems. Just a warning installing MyDVD 4.0 puts a lot of extra junk on your machine (ligos codecs, Padus ASPI lowerfilter driver (pfc.sys) and some other directshow filters) that aren't removed when you uninstall MyDVD. Hi all, I recently dumped my DRU-120 (lucky me :-), and got the 500A. So far I like it alot compared to the other three DVD drives Ive had. Compatibility is still a major issue be it the drives, media, or software. I think the DRU-500 is a step in the right direction. I have been able to burn DVD+R (havent experimented with others yet since my desktop player Samsung DVD-V1000 seems to prefer +r), using "DVD Complete" (www.dazzle.com). This drive, so far, wont work with NeoDVD (my favorite software), but DVD Complete is a close second. Dazzle has recently added support for the DRU500, and you may need to update the softwares burning engine at their FTP site. The problem I have with DVD Complete is that it will not recognize my ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon card.......Geeeeze......never ends. At in least having a multi-format drive like the 500A, I have more versatilty, and dont have to have two different drives to have both the + and - , media formats. I just wish these software companies would get on the stick and make their products more universal too Comments posted by John from Other, November 11, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

Just got my first dvd burner, dru500a on friday and this baby is beautiful. im cheapo, so its been 3 years since an upgrade. ps2/xbox, cd on the fly, went flawless on the cheapest of media princo, .59 cents, qtcdr.com. for u gamers, u know what i mean right. dvd's played perfect on home old panasonic A120. the only downside, your apps have to be current, yes very current, and you know what i mean by that too. since i've tested on cheap media. time to move up in the world and see if it actually does 4x. its a 10 baby Comments posted by vinh bui from Other, November 09, 2002. Just received my DRU500A yesterday from SonyStyle. Couple of points when installing 1. If you already have a DVD or CD drive and depending on your confuguration, you should set the pins to SLAVE before connecting to the secondary IDE channel. I didn't and XP didn't pick the drive up...changed it to slave and it picked it up right away. 2. After I installed the drive I couldn't open it! My DELL 8200 does not like the style of the drive in that it catches on the top. If you notice, unlike other drives there is absolutey no 'free space' at the top...removed the drive again, left out the plastic front fascia trim of my DELL and voila...it opens. So far so go good with it, burned a sample movie to DVD+RW media that came with it, went out to my media room and threw it my Panansonic home player and thumbs up...good burn. Ordered some Accu media as I hear it is compatable and I should be good to go... Good muli-purpose drive Sony...there may still be some software issues but once that catches up, this should be great Comments posted by Randy Robertson from Other, November 09, 2002. After reading some reviews here I went out and bought the Sony DRU-500A today. Before I installed it I upgraded Nero to the latest version (5.5.9.17). That was based on what I read here too. It couldn't have been any easier to install on my Athlon 2000 system running WinXP Pro. I set it up as a slave to my TDK 48X CDRW. Nero recognized it with no problem. I stumbled around for about 30 minutes trying to figure out how to get Nero to show the DVD burning menu, but once I found that I burned 1 Sony DVD+RW and 3 Verbatim 2.4X DVD+R' data CD's. I burned 6 650MB files on each DVD, a total of 3900MB per disc. Total time to burn was 20 minutes. I was impressed, that's a lot faster than I could have burned 6 CDR's using my TDK 48X. I still had around 500MB space left, so a totally full DVD would take a bit more than 20 minutes. The Verbatim's were not too pricey, a 15 pack was $45 at Best Buy. I'm hoping the cheaper DVD-R media at meritline.com will work ok. They say it's ok for the DRU-500. I'm mainly going to use the Sony to archive data, so I didn't bother to install any of the software that came with it. Comments posted by Darryl from Other, November 08, 2002. i just got my sony burner !! was soo happy bought it from dell early oct, they told me it was delayed till nov 22, i guess they got their shipment early :) anywayz, put in the Sony DVD+RW that came with the box, it works nicely i tried some others also 1) DVD-R (smarkdisk) - failed at the closing the dvd 2) Sony dvd-rw - works fine my question is, is it because the (smarkdisk) dvd-r isn't compatible with my dvd burner? or is it because i used more then 4.5gb(heard a rumour that if you burn more then 4.5 it won't close properly) or i'm just unlucky? well gang, I have been kinda sitting back to see how you guys do..LOL..I have had my sony for about a week now and just burned my first 5 dvd's.....I burnt ripped xbox that was on optodisc loaded in my pioneer dvd rom to my sony using Memorex dvd-r version 2.0. I burnt on the fly and from HD, on the fly was alot faster! All 5 burnt and played great! I did have issue's with cd's however, the Sony dont like Verbatim 24x cd-r's, I also have tried both Record Now and the latest Nero and to my surprise after all I have see here the Record Now works much better for me. Maybe this is due to configuration? I have my dvd-rom on my primary IDE and the Sony on my secondary IDE, heck if i know but lets keep posting till we all get this figured out!
