I bought one in Microcenter, MN, just yesterday. $69.99 after $40 rebate. The drive in the box is NEC (ND 2510A) - they didn't even care to replace the white lable on the drive, so the lable say exactly "NEC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan". Hovewer, made in Malaysia. I haven't burned anything yet - but ND 2510A is known as a good one, isn't it?? :-) Same issue as the previose reviewer - the front panel is black, so it does not look very nice on the white comp. body. They are still on sale for $69 there (at least till the end of the week) - so hurry if you planned to get NEC DL. Comments posted by Max from United States, July 29, 2004. I picked up this drive at CompUSA for $109.00 with a $30.00 rebate which brings the price down to 79 bucks. Let's get down to the facts. The drive turns out to be an NEC 2510a. That's good! In the week I've had it, it has burned every brand of media I have thrown at, both quality and cheapo, without a single coaster. I have burnt +R, +RW, -R and 1 Dual Layer Fuji I found at Best Buy (the only store and only brand that had DL media). The DL disc was a backup of Harry Potter Sorcerers Stone. Everything burned from this drive plays in my Samsung stand alone player, my son's Apex player, my in-laws Sony players and a friends JVC. This is good! However, I do have a couple of nit picky things I don't like. It has a black face plate and doesn't look good in my aluminum case. The light doesn't change color when burning like it does with my Lite-On 411S that this drive replaced. These 2 complaints are personal and has nothing to do with the overall performance of the drive. In summary, I would highly recommend this drive.
