| I bought mine today and Installed the drive and software. I opened up a Philips Dvd+rw (dvdrw/013). I got myDvd to burn a movie clip to the dvd+rw. When It was finished I tried to play it in my philips 701 dvd player with no luck. It just ejected the dvd. After trying 4 of the 5 philips +rw disk I gave up and opened the Memorex +rw that came with the drive. I have written 3 movie clips with no problems what so ever and they work in my home dvd player. | Bought this one from BestBuy two days ago for an incredible price ($249, or to be more exact, $299 minus $50 mail-in rebate). So far, it has worked amazingly well. The installation went very well... I just had to install the drive, and it was recognized immediately (on Win ME), there was no need to install any additional drivers. I burnt both a DVD+RW and DVD+R, and my Sony Desktop DVD player was able to read both without any problems. I haven't encountered even the smallest problems so far. I haven't tried to burn a CD-R or CD-RW yet, but I doubt that there would be any problems. Other than Nero, the included software is somewhat basic and limited to the typical "wizard-driven" DVD authoring tools (the type of software that you usually get for under $50 at CompUSA) which are nice if you just want to burn your vacation video on DVD really quick, but which are somewhat useless for any more complex tasks (i.e. if you want to create stuff like motion menus, subtitles, commentary tracks, etc., you'll have to buy additional authoring software). | I also have this drive and can say that it works great! I have used Memorex , Fuji , Verbatim blanks and they all work without a hitch. Setup was a breeze and I have made over ten DVD home movies with the unit. They all played on all sorts of different players....Pioneer , Samsung , PS2 and Xbox. Over all VERY happy with this unit! | Still good. Made several DVD's so far, and CD's. All my home DVD players play the DVD+R and DVD+RW mediums. I've noticed though, that when creating a DVD from a DVD (given you have to make it smaller as the orig is more than one DVD+R can hold) the My Sonic DVD writing software seems to make a compressed DVD (.mpg file) near double the size during burn. I have not quite figured out why yet, but when I compressed an .mpg file to 4.3GB to burn as a DVD to the disc, it made it 7.6GB. Obviously unable to burn it at that point. So I finally had to bring the .mpg file size down to around 2.30GB to fit it on a DVD+R which then became 4.03GB. Could be a quirk with the software, who knows. There is some good information on this site though about how to create a DVD to DVD + or - R and keep the audio track it came with. That is my next attempt as the video compressed to 2.03GB or not is still great! Now I am using my DVD InCD software that came with the hardware as a backup write to. I have a server that gets nightly updates. Well, if I forget to clean up the HD then of course that starts to hog space on my other machines. So, using Samba I can transfer my backups from my *nix server to another box (and write directly to the DVD+RW) using the InCD software. It's very convenient! | So far, so good. Bought it 3 days ago. Made one DVD from some Movie DVD's I had compressed into smaller mpegs using Tmpeg. Fit 4 movies on one Memorex DVD+RW disc, (7000kbps large VCD size) complete with menu's (using the provided MyDVD software). Played nicely on my Pioneer home 3 disc DVD player (sorry, can't recall the model# for the home player (it's listed here as playing all but Mp3's anyway.) :) Currently using the InCD and Nero software that also came with the hardware to write direct to the drive (as another drive on my system). Requires a format, but only takes a min or so on a 1.4ghz Intel Proc, with 256mb RDRAM. Bought 3 DVD+R dics, yet to test. I'll note those when I have more media to play with. I hate to waste a disk on just one movie. In the process of trying to build a huge MP3 library on one disc to play on my Apex, we shall see. :) All in all, good player, DVD+R/RW, CD/R/RW so far. HAve not tried the CDR/RW feature yet, but if it works like my last burner, I am in good shape. Don't accidently buy a DVD-R/RW from best buy and open the plastic wrap, they won't exchange it. Not to happy, but my mistake, (picked up the wrong disc). Purchased unit for $329.00 ($50 rebate) US from BestBuy. Installed in 2 secs, easy as pie, WinXP pro did not do anything (visible to install), it just worked. Installed the software it came with, Nero (newest), InCD, MyDVD and PowerDVD. So far all good products. Used Nero for years, love it anyway!!
