This is really a CD drive with a temporary life as a DVD burner. Is fussy about media, doesn't close out burns well, and won't even read its own burns after a while. Comments posted by ddf from United States, November 04, 2006. Rated this writer 1 of 10. |

This drive is dated with a DVD writing speed of only 4X. There is a better replacement (not by Sony) if I can find it. I saw it once on the web and it's plug and play. Better specs. Don't bother calling Sony, they will tell you there is no upgrade. They want you to buy another notebook. Comments posted by DaleB from United States, March 09, 2006. Rated this writer 6 of 10. |

had this drive for over 1 year. pisses me off constantly. very very fussy with media. Some +RW discs I burnt 6 months ago now read as blank. sometimes burns dvd-r and dvd +r with success, then cannot even read the discs afterwards, even if they play fine in standalone dvd player!! Today I officially give up, have upgraded firmware etc. I buy a POINEER DVR-109d today and connect it with USB2 Comments posted by natas from United Kingdom, August 01, 2005. Safe the slowliness, it used to be very good, but after about one year it decided not to recognize some DVD-R brands. Now it can still read some DVD's, but burning is not possible anymore. Cd's are fine. Updated to latest firmware, but no improvment. Comments posted by Reto from Switzerland, July 18, 2005. Rated this writer 5 of 10. |

I purchased a sony PCG-GRT-100 laptop in Canada and it contained the DW-U50A DVD/CD burner. I had to return it since this drive did not work properly. It was inconsistent with media (And I tried MANY brands). The replacement unit has been fantastic. No problems with CD/DVD writing since the replacement. I cant remember a bad burn. Its slow going with DVD-R at 1X performance. The DVD+RW clips along at 2.4 times. Why they don’t step up the DVD-R to 2X via firmware I have no idea. The drive does run hot, but all laptop drives seem to be that way. I am using firmware 1.5f. Comments posted by spear from Canada, May 28, 2004. Rated this writer 7 of 10. |
