| Maybe you are interested in some results I have for 3 different DVD+R disks (burned 4482 MB (full disk) all at 4x although for some disks 8x would have been possible). I used Nero CD-DVD Speed 3.50 to analyze the results (the DDW-082 gives PIE/POE/POF errors and Jitter quality results). From best to worst (avg.PIE(max)(total)/avg.POE(max)(total)/POF/avg.Jitter(max)/Quality Score): 1) RICOHJPN R01 (sold as Sony DVD+R 4x) 3.81(28)(38577)/0.02(4)(109)/0/9.77%(11.3%)/92 2) YUDEN000 T01 (sold as Maxell DVD+R 4x) 4.66(27)(48757)/0.06(8)(659)/0/9.92%(13.7%)/66 3) MCC 002 (sold as Verbatim DataLife Plus) 258.25(2789)(3917552)/11.44(172)(148142)/0/12.34%(19.7%)/0 (no typing mistakes!) The MCC 002 media burn quality is quite bad... (this is unfortunately the disk supplied together with the drive - so not the best choice to show how good the drive can be) started real good, but from 2.5GB to the end, real bad (although no POF uncorrectable errors - it's a miracle). If compared to my reference review on the intranet ( http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/138 ), number 1 and 2 switched places (but still have very comparable results), but the MCC 002 is burned unexpectedly bad. Please understand that I can do only relative quality measurements with my DDW-082 (or any other) drive (all depends on drive hardware/software). But that's fine for me, at least I will be able to choose the best DVD media for my burner, and do regular quality checks on burned DVD's to detect detoriation of data and make a copy before really uncorrectable errors occur. | I have this drive since some days now. Bought it for several reasons: needed to be able to measure DVD quality (PIE/PIF/POF/Jitter - for CD C1/C2), must be excellent write quality on DVD+R or -R, and not overly expensive. I mainly use it to put my Digital8 homevideo's on it. This drive is supported by Nero CD-DVD Speed and DVDInfoPro (both free programs) for measuring writing quality of DVD's (to my surprise, even though more DVD writers are able to give PIE/PIF/POF/Jitter output, not many new (and not many old either) are supported by these programs). By the way, probably the best quality measuring writer/software comes from Plextor but at a price... I've also read the review from cdfreaks, and up to now I am able to reproduce the very good/excellent writing results with DVD+R/RW disks (since I had an 'old' NEC 1100A able to write only on + disks, I still had some of them in store - bad writing quality by the way, this NEC, I can see now). I used some Sony DVD+R (mediacode RICOHJPN R01) with excellent results, and a Fuji DVD+RW (RICOHJPN W11)with mixed results (first 500MB of disk up to 120 PIE error spikes (however still way below the 280 limit for a good disk - but I am getting spoiled by excellent burning results already), thereafter very good results, less than 12 PIE error spikes - must be a bad disk...). According to the review from cdfreaks (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/138) this burner indeed has less good results with DVD-R. IMPORTANT thing is to look at the media list supported for this burner on their website (http://www.nu-europe.com/Products/DDW082.html -> Downloads) - other people in this review write about brands of DVD's... however it is all about the media-code on the disks... NOT the brand name (for instance TDK has several sources for the optical dye on the disks). According to cdfreaks, the best DVD+R's for this writer are: 1)YUDEN000T01 (second Revision) - Plextor brand (up to now, could not find it here in the Netherlands) 2) RICOHJPN R01 - only a little bit less excellent results, easily obtainable (Sony DVD+R sold at many shops here, or Ricoh branded red/green jewel case - less easy to get) For DVD+RW: 1) MKM A02 - Verbatim DataLife Plus (but beware - this brand/type sells also with different dyes from different manufacturers with different (less good) media codes. 2) MCC01RW11n9 - ALSO sold as Verbatim DataLife Plus... 3) RICOHJPN W11 - Fuji (sold at some Combi Markt's) Beware that some "no-name" brands (bla bla Perfect Quality bla bla) sometimes have an intentionally WRONG (better) mediacode on them, to sell better - this is pure fraud! | NU DDW-082 DVD Drive is great, but at first it was very hard to burn a dvd, I didn't know that I had to format the disc, because the company don't do it for you. and when you open up the tray the inside has a cream color not black like the outside does, but that's ok. | Well gee guess I should have come here first. Generic DVD-r dont work for sure on this burner. I have been scratching head for 5 days now, and out of 10 Generic DVD-r Blanks (Great Quality) I have successfully made 8 coasters! | I am looking into buying this drive, but clearly there has not been a lot of exposure based on their being only 1 comment to date. There was a very data based evaluation performed on this drive and several others, with this drive being the editor's choice. | I have a DDW-081 updated to the 082 via the B370 firmware update. It is a good writer, but is flaky with generic DVD-R disks. The DVD-Rs I bought from www.maplin.co.uk fail to burn correctly (even with the withdrawn 372 firmware) - Nero goes through the motions of burning, but the discs are coasters. They worked fine with my old NEC drive, though. Fine with other, branded, discs (Verbatim). Would I recommend this DVD burner. Yes. It is stupidly cheap, and the support from Nu Tech is excellent.
