| I do IT support, and this drive is now the unit in my own PC for the ease of reading/writing just about anything people bring me on disc or on card (except for XD??). Burns CD's fine, but I have had some problems reading them in an old DVD drive in one computer. Put it down to scratched media somehow. Had loads of trouble burning DVD from MPEGs using NeroVisionExpress and CMC AE1 discs, even though they are on the supported media list. Also had trouble copying Sony DVD Recorder made DVD discs to the same media. The Princo media was fine but now NLA! Comments posted by wiz.au from Australia, May 11, 2005. | Well it writes dvd's... it seems rather unpredictable as far as performance, though. The box says it reads dvds at 12x, yet the website says 8x. and the best I can get on the read is 6x. I've Been burning 4x GQ dvd-r's and all play in my phillips tv/ dvd combo, but there's some problems on my apex ad500w... a lot of hiccups on some copies, could be the media... The bundled software is acceptable, BUT beware if u have other burners installed. NERO forces you to uninstall older versions of nero, and once it installs itself, it will only burn on the drive that it came bundled with! Now I have to use other software for my plextor. | i see fry's is getting popular, they just opened a store in duluth, ga and i got mine for $50 along with fuji 4x dvd+r. I used dvdshrink to make 1:1 copy's of my dvd's. Nice program to make back up's, and even better with this burner. My back up's play in every dvd player i'v tried including my ps2 without any problem or quality decrease. Only problem i have now is that some of my back up's i did using divx. going from divx to dvd is tricky. Plays in some dvd players (sometimes you have to eject and reload the disk before it will read, but it will read) and my ps2 reads the dvd like a regular dvd. When it plays the video is just as good, but there is no audio. I'v tried several different audio formats on the *.avi and still no luck. If you gotta idea on that one i'd love to hear it...other then that...i almost spent $100 at microcenter buying a lite-on dvd+r. wasn't duel format. This is duel format which i am very happy about. I'm also happy with the fact that i saved $50 and getting the same performance out of this one then i would have on any others. Maybe better. BTW i researched it, there will be no such thing as a firmware update that will enable duel-layer burning. Personally i'll expect to see this "non-update" ready to download in 4-6 months. | This is an update on my previous comment. After updating the firmware to B255 I'm now able to copy movies on cheap +R/RW media' with bit setting, that are playable on all DVD ROMs and many dvd players (except my Toshiba SD-3109 player which still cannot recognize them - any suggestions out there?) Considering the price I paid for it and it's capabilities I think this is a very good burner (with the firmware upgrade, of course) and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anybody who is looking for one. I'm changing my reting to a 9 for this machine. Now if only BTC would come up with a firmware upgrade for burning DL media, this machine will be hard to beat. Comments posted by L. | Bought it at Fry's in an effort to aquire a burner that will burn Fry,s house brand DVD+R's. Sucess! This one will burn GQ 8X DVD+R media no problemo. I know a manager at Fry's who also let me know that BTC is owned and manu. by Fry's. Cool idea sell your own stuff at your own store! Ive got nothing but good to say about Fry's and thats where all my spare cash goes! As for this burner its working good and no coasters. I have not installed the bitrate program because I play all my stuff on a Sony DVP-NS325 and its a great player that plays just about everything! If you want to play burned DVD'S then its best to buy a Sony or Panasonic player for your home theater. Even older Panasonics play burned media although they dont say so on the box. Sony players are as cheap as $82 at wal-mart so dont be a cheap ass and get a crappy $39 player when you can get the best for less than $90! I have verified this player to work with GQ DVD media tomarro I will reveiw a Toshiba they have on sale for the same reasons and post a reveiw. Good luck to all! | I just got this writer from Fry's for $69.00. I do not have any problems burning cheap +R/RW media except when the bit is set to mimic DVD-ROM which is the reason that I bought this machine, besides the price. The bit setting feature is supposed to make the disk readable by older dvd players. However, with bit setting activated, burning appeared to be successful but the disk cannot be read by any DVD reader/player, not even by this machine (that burned the disk). I have a P4 2.4 GHz, 512 MB RAM machine and use DVD Shrink 3.1.7 with Nero 6. I'd like to hear from anybody that has any success in using the bit setting feature. This machine will probably go back to Fry's if I cannot resolve this issue as I already have a Pioneer 4X DVDR that serves me well. Comments posted by L.A. from United States, July 15, 2004. | Well, I just been delivered this writer, and i must say it is superb! It has replaced my BenQ 40/12/48 cdwriter which never was able to even burn above 12 speed really and reading sucked on it big time, always reverted to PIO mode no matter what. My first burn was a on an imation, normal audio cd, burnt no sweat at 40 speed, tried another lo quality disc, 40 speed no problems. Thought, is this too goo to be true, so i tried a verbatim dvd±rw 4 speed, wrote a half full dvd and voila, worked, though took about 15 minutes, which was odd i thought, must be something to do with formatting first, and re-writable discs... well i'll have to research more about that. Tried that on my Philips hometheatre, voila! worked perfectly. I'm real impressed. Packaging was really good, who really needs instructions these days anyway - i mean if you need a dvd rewritable chances are you know what you are doing to install it. Comes with analog audio cable, mounting screws, and here is the best bit - not only does it come with the plain beige front panel, but also aluminium style and black covers. They come off easy, unlike the benq which i have used as crash mat for my dumb-bells. The liveupdate feature, is good, no having to reboot using an old dos boot disc (hate how older systems and hardware still use that approach) is quite safe - i just hope that i don't get a power failure one day while using that.
