| Could not write on my Memorex 16x neither, which kind of sucks... Well, unless there is a new firmware which enables the writing capability - and I do not think there will be one any time in the future - I will go back to 8x media. | Has served me well in my Dell 5150 for more than two years now. Used to get some coasters early in the career, but has seen none until the other day. | I just bought this philips drive new off ebay for $89us and and very pleased with it so far. It came with the new 1.03 firmware. I have burnt about 2/3's of my philips 2.4x 100 pack spindle without a single coaster. I have also used memorex dvd+rw discs without a single write problem yet. I really hate that this drive got a bad name because of the early firmware. It was dell's fault for not actually testing this properly before releasing it to customers. | I disagree to above negatives. I have seen many people complain on the drive, specifically the 0.99 firmware, I have it with the 1.03 firmware, and it works fine on both +R and +RW. | OEM drive from Ricoh. Delivered with some Dell laptops, for example Inspiron 8500/8600/500m. A lot of people have expressed frustration with this model on the Dell forums: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_cdrom&message.id=27676 http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_cdrom&message.id=28418 http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_cdrom&message.id=29426 The firmware update available at http://support.ap.dell.com/ap/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=R67115&sid=&os=Windows_NT&searchtype=age does not do anything to fix the problems experienced. I had one faulty burner, got it replaced for the same model and now it's still working ok after burning ~50 discs. Still looking to get it replaced by a different model though. It burns some discs that won't play in my standalone Philips although most work fine. I'm not sure if this is because I have bad dvd image files or not, I didn't test this thouroughly yet.
