I bought the DVR-104 which is the OEM version of the A04. Very nice burner, installed without a hitch and burns like a champ! The media isn't horribly expensive. Comments posted by steve from Other, May 02, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Got my DVR-104 (same drive as DVR-A04) from www.hypermicro.com for about $340 plus $10.XX Fedex 2nd day shipping. Works great with the cheap DVD-RW I bought from the same place. Hypermicro 's service is good, no wonder they have > 9.5 / 10.0 ratings out of 200 posts on www.resellerratings.com. I tested also the Pioneer DVD-RW, Apple DVD-R, all work fine on my Sony DVP-S500 as well as Apex 703. I love this drive. Comments posted by jhchen from Other, May 01, 2002. Got my DVR-104 online for about a week now. It burns with no problems, but freezing and blocks appears towards the end of the movie (cheap media) when play with my Toshiba SD-2710 stand alone player. The same discs play fine with PowerDVD on DVR-104 though. My other PC-DVD drive, Toshiba SD-M1212, always freeze after a few seconds with both Apple and cheap media burned with DVR-104, but plays other Apple discs burned with a Matsushita recorder just fine. Greetings from Chile! Next week I´ll buy the Pioneer DVR-A03, because this is the model that is here. My question is: What´s the diference with the model A04? Is better to wait and buy the A04 model? Please give me some information... Sorry for my english. Thanks in advance. Rod Comments posted by rodrubber from Other, April 26, 2002. Rated this writer No rating. |

I've been using the DVR-104 for almost a month now. Bought online at esbuy.com with software bundle. All I can say is this burner is fantastic. It runs quite quietly. Was easy to set up. Did make some coasters because of my own lack of knowledge. PowerDVD seems to work better than other software players. Prassi PrimoDVD is very good and easy to use too. Previous versions of Nero lower than 5.5.8 will not recognize this drive. Have to use DVD-Video template to make playable DVD-R. PrimoDVD seems to do a better job here. By the way, generic DVD-R blanks are absolutely OK to use. This purchase was a no brainer. This burner from Pioneer is an absolute winner. Happy burning. Cheers. This is my first DVD-R drive and so far so good, with the exception that no DVD Authoring / Writting software was able to find the drive. I tried everything I could get hold of and eventually DVDit PE 2.5 is the only authoring / Writing software that can see the A04. I should mention that my A04 is connected though a external USB - IDE Kit as I use a Sony Vaio Laptop. One other thing was that Nero 5580 hung every time when trying to detect the drive, I changed back to Nero 5578 and no problem. So after much fiddling and reading of forums/news groups etc...its now working 100% Comments posted by bitez from Other, April 26, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

First drive I received was defective- would read all types of media, would NOT successfully complete a write to either DVD-R or CD-R. Second drive works like a charm. PLEASE NOTE- those of you running Windows 2000, this drive will not work properly with DMA enabled! You must go into device manager and set the IDE channel that the DVD-R is attached to to PIO mode only. Ohter than that, this drive ROCKS! Comments posted by No Spam from Other, April 25, 2002. I had a Panasonic LF-D311sc that just wouldn't write to dvd-r. It was pissin me off after 3 weeks, so I bought a DVR-104, the OEM model of DVR-A04. It's aliiiiive aliiiiiiive!! succesfully backed up a dvd. On a smaller note, for people using Nero or Instant CD/DVD, when you simulate your first test dvd-r (cos god knows you can't blow more cash on infinite discs after buyin a dvd recorder, empty wallet *sniff*) anyway, like I was saying, for me Nero plays dead at around 55% and Instant CD/DVD plays dead at about 6%. It only lasts about a minute, then it continues with it's job. I blew a few hours messing with settings before I found out I was just being impatient lol. Definetly worth the $333, yee I went digging through pricewatch.com listings. Site I got it from is down, drive'll prolly blow up tommorow heh but roight now Ah'm happy with it. This baby came with my iMacG4/800, Apple sell's it as a dvd-r only but its the Pioneer DVR-A04 thats inside. Using Toast you can erase DVD-RW's. From within the finder you only have to drag your Data/contents to the disk, when youre ready just burn the thing in the background. Creating video DVD's, use iMovie or Final Cut Pro for editing and iDVD or DVD Studio Pro to author, it can't be easier and quicker. Great device! Bought the unit a couple of weeks age. Very impressive. Get a DVD-RW to test out your DVD burning procedure. You can always start over without trashing a disc. I was disappointed the first couple of movies I burned didn't work on my Panasonic RV31 but did on my PC. Then they started working. I found out via the forum and personal experiments that the VIDEO_TS folder and the files it contains must be in CAPITAL letters work with my RV31. PowerDVD didn't care about case. I found a utility on ZDNET called something like RenameIt which can change the case on the filenames for you. Using Nero to burn. I have tried several brands of media. Imation, Memorex, TDK, Pioneer, which are silver, work great. Even burned a TDK at 2x with no problems. Optodisc was shakey, need to re-try because I didn't have DMA enabled. Pengo and CompUSA, both gold, were very shakey. I used Nero DVD speed to check quality. The best ones would get up to over 6-8x read speed before they had problems. The gold disks had problems reading over 2x. If your only watching, you only need 1x though. I use a 106S for a reader. The 4X read speed of the A04 is a bit slow for verifying. A great unit. Perfect I'd say. I recommend it. The software is good if you take the time to play with it. I will give it 10+ Comments posted by ART ARGYROPOULOS from Other, April 20, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

This drive is simply awsome! First DVD Backup I burned was a simple one (Transformers: the movie) because it was a single layer disk, first try was a failure (MY fault) second was a coaster (stupid texas storms knocked out the power) 3rd worked perfectly. I'm using the cheap media from ESbuy (where the drive came from) so far, but now that my super cheap stuff is in I'll try it next and see how it goes. If your gonna get a DVD Writer THIS on is the one to get. Comments posted by Flaystus from Other, April 17, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Great drive. Already had my dvd content ready to burn. Setup Took all of 5 minutes, burned my dvd and played it right away. DVD-R I used wasn't pioneer and my player didn't like it. I burned it to no name dvd-rw and that played perfect. Couldn't be happier with the purchase. Comments posted by Matt from Other, April 17, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

I found a site the other day that lists dvd-r compatability with set top dvd players. The site is at http://www.high-techproductions.com/compatibility.htm A note about the dvd-r not playing on Apex 600 and Toshiba 9200. It's the dvd players not the dvr-a04 I didn't see either system listed as being able to play DVD-R. Comments posted by Matt from Other, April 14, 2002. Rated this writer No rating. |

This company sells both the A04 and media for as low as $1.99 each with free shipping !! http://www.prestoshopper.com The R/W cycle is much quicker than the A03 and the drive offers a hassle free DVD burning experience. Well, after reading all the positive comments here, I bought one of these things. Since then, I have yet to be able to burn a disc which is recognized by either my Apex 600 or my Toshiba 9200. So far, this thing and the expensive media it requires are a worthless pile of crap. Comments posted by Jeff Hardy from Other, April 12, 2002. Rated this writer 1 of 10. |

What an awesome piece of electronics!! I've had absolutely no problems with this unit, and it's burned everything I could throw at it. I do wish I'd known about the whole +/- thing though as I accidentally purchased a 5 pack of +RW disks which are now taking up space on my desk.... Anyway, like the rest said it's a great unit and don't be afraid to spend a little more for quality... Comments posted by Scooby111 from Other, April 11, 2002. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Superb writer. Just got mine yesterday, already burned 6 disks. Cost me £269 which is a pretty nice price in the UK! Finding only problem with the time it takes to write a disk, but hey, whats an hour!? Comments posted by Nt016 from Other, April 10, 2002. Rated this writer No rating. |

OK, after burning 6DVD's with with this writer no problems. I give this writer a 9.9. I use Smartripper, then IfoEdit, and burn with PrimoDVD. The only reason I don't give it a 10 is that CloneCD seems to have a problem with it. Will have to look into this. Buy the way, ESBuy has great prices on dvd-r and rw. Just ordered another 20 dvd-r with movie cases. Comments posted by John from Other, April 08, 2002. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Got the firewire package of the DVR-104 from esbuy.com. True plug and play on my Sony VAIO with Win98 SE. Came with power and firewire cables so all you need is to plug them in. Only gripe is the fan of the firewire box is a bit noisey, but that's only a minor irritation. Burnt 3 dvd-r so far, all played perfectly on my apex 5131. One was a home movie and two were movie back-ups. Used PrimoDvd that came with the burner. Comments posted by krypdo from Other, April 05, 2002. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Is it posible for me to copy some of my old DVD bought out of the store? I have a DVD changer that's DVD-R & DVD-RW compatible in my car and would rather use a copy in there than the original. Comments posted by Dan from Other, April 05, 2002. Rated this writer No rating. |

Purchased the package from esb, $438 for the drive a bunch of blank dvd-r's, one dvd-rw, and software (DVDit, Powerdvd, and primo). Best deal I found since it included free shipping, which was quick. I purchased this drive because it is basically the same unit used by Apple and Compaq, and I figure that they will drive the market. I took a chance because I got the newer model even though the A03 was the one getting all of the rave reviews. Don't have much use for RW media since -R media is cheap enough for my use and I don't like to rewrite. The drive came with all of the mounting hardware and installed without a hitch. The included software works well and provides all of the basic features that you would want to do with the drive. The Sonic DVDit program looks a lot like iDVD that comes with the mac. I have burned several data dvd-r's and I am satisified with the results. It took about 1 hour to burn 4.5 gigs of data files onto a disk. I also tried some cd-r and it worked fine. DVD's would not play back on my Toshiba 3109, but that is most likely due to the player not the disk. The only issue I have with the drive is that for use as a data drive, the performance is terrible, feels like slow seek times. I would have a good fast read only drive to partner with this unit and use the A04 only for writing. Comments posted by John Borges from Other, April 03, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

Great unit, backed up allready 3 of my favored DVD's. No probs so far at all. I use cheap $2.- DVD-r and DVD-RW media and was able to play it with no probs on my setop DVD Apex 1500. But the software package isn't as good. MYDVD is pretty useless since it doesn't allow 16:9 formats. Power DVD is OK. Primo DVD is ok, but I like my Nero better. Over all it's a good package for $375.- Comments posted by Tom from Other, April 03, 2002. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |
