| This is the one burner that burns the customer as well. It was so bad it made my machine inoperable for inconsistent periods of time.(Burner hangs OS).HP support was beyond attrocious and this burner helped me finally realize not to purchase HP products or face the consequences of buying poorly manufactured components (I believe this drive is just a repackaged BENQ low end feeder)The drive was so poor BENQ didnt even want to put their name on it and sold it to HP. Avoid the horror story I had for the last year (warranty hell)remove this drive from your machine and dispose of it in a suitable inferno. | I bought the unit about 6 months ago, worked just fine, burnt about 300 dvds, and it has finally started dying on me. I've started getting power calibration errors, along with can't close session. I burns one 32kb track and it dies. I've wasted tons of dvds, different formats, but I think the unit just died. I tried updating firmware, and also reverting, but no use. | Well This 400i replaced my previous 200i HP Burner at best buy under the PSP. I purchased it in January and yesterday it started giving me the same errors the 200i gave me. Power Calibration Error. Caused about 5 coasters and I gave up on it, made a trip to best buy this morning, and picked up a Plextor 8x dual format burner and it works perfect. All I gotta say is STAY AWAY FROM HP BURNERS! | diginetman, you're using the wrong type of dvd media. This burner uses either dvd+r or dvd+rw media only. To copy movies, you need to remove the CSS protection with the DVDdecrypter first, then use DVDshrink 3.1.7, which can also be downloaded for free (www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/), so it will fit onto a dvd disc. The dvd disc says 4.7 GB, however it really holds only about 4.35 GB. Most movies are about twice this size because they're dual-layered, and the blank dvd media is one-sided, which is why you have to shrink it down to fit. As for my comments about this burner, it's super quiet and burns well. Came with my system, a P4, 2.6 Ghz with HT, 80G hard drive. I highly recommend this one. | Would Somebody pleae help?? Errors and No Luck??? I just bought a HP pavilion with HP400i burner and a case of TDK DVD-R, I bought DVD Cloner II, and also downloaded 1Click DVD, plus the DVD Decrypter and DVD43, I have NTFS and Win XP, Last couple of days have been hell trying to backup a commercal Movie. | The HP DVD400i is a great burner, but its only drawback is that it does not burn DVD-RW or DVD-R. I have burnt about 30 Discs using Nero Ultra and DVD XCOPY Platinum without any coasters. It burns 4X media at about 12 to 13 minnutes and 8X media at 8 minnutes. If it had the capability to burn DVD-RW and DVD-R it would definately be about the best burner on the market and that is why I gave it an 8 out of 10. I use Melody DVD+RW, HP DVD+R(8X) AND DVD+RW(2.4X and 4X), VERBATUM DVD+R(8X), Memorex DVD+RW(2.4X), and Phillips DVD+RW(2.4X)Discs all of which can be purchased if you research and find the best deal(s). | I have had this for about 2 weeks & have burned over 50 dvd's. This dvd is really good. Dvd drive is very quiet & has never given me problems. I have been writting at 4x with Nero. I am going to try 8x media soon. The only issue is that within Windows XP is shows the drive as being a HP 400c instead of a 400i. Not sure if this matter but works wonderful! | Great burner! if your media is only 4x it will burn at 4x for about 13 minutes even if you use nero or record now. If you use 8x dvd media, it burns a dvd in less than 9 minutes. It copies 4.7gig data at 10x. It plays on all my dvd players like Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, Mintek, Toshiba and Philips. Comments posted by nerd69 from Other, January 09, 2004.
