| Great reliable burner compare with others. Problems will always be there if your media are cheap poor quality type.......even the world best burners! | Ran into problems with Princo DVD -R discs. It would have problems getting past the "Writing Lead In" using Nero. Updated the firmware to 0049 from Gigabyte site (a synthesized 0049 region hack also exists) and now haven't had that lead in problem since. | When first bought I updated the firmware to 0043 and applied the patch to void region setting. The drive would burn anything but I kept getting coasters with -R DVDs. Anyway, I then found the 0045 firmware and loaded this. I checked using DVDinfo and found that my patch for defeating the region setting was still in place (i.e. I am not limited to 5 changes). And, importantly, I can now burn -R DVDs sweetly (important to me because I need to have the option of watching DVDs on my ibook which can only read -R/-RW/RAM DVDs.) | Have had this drive for about a month. I have written to Dysan DVD-R, TDK+R, TDK-R, Verbatim DVD+R all at 4X and Verbatim DVD+RW at 2X. No failures - no coasters. Have burnt plenty CD-R and CD-RW (TDK and Dysan). Nice at 40X. Type of content burnt was DVD Video and Data, using CloneDVD and Nero 6.3. All movies playback fine on my elcheapo Sinotec DVD player. Have not tested the DVD+RW discs in the player though. All in all - a great drive. Version 0043 firmware. Pentium 4 2.6GHz 1GB RAM. Comments posted by John Young from South Africa, January 26, 2004. | Hello Sunny I have the Gigabyte too. Did you have to do anything special to use the BTC firmware flash? Is there any risk? Sorry, I could not see any other way to contact you. I cannot burn to Princo 4x DVD-R disks. Even though two friends with this drive can burn to the same disks. I cannot burn Laser 4x DVD-R disks, even though one of the friends with this same drive can, and the other cannot. | This is actually the BTC 1004 burner rebadged. There are a lot of comments for that drive. My personal experience with this drive: Very bad media compatiblity, the only thing worse than the compatibility is the terrible write quality. Absolute headache to find media compatible with the burner AND is written at good enough quality to work on stand alone player/console fine. Same discs burnt by a pioneer are no problem. Gigabyte seemed to have stopped support for this drive - too much of a headache for them too maybe? BTC have since released 2 new firmwares, gigabyte aren't updating anymore.
