actually shorty there is a HUGE reason to buy this drive, and the proof is in the pudding in this case. since there are tons of reviews for the consumer writers, yet very few for REAL PROFESSIONAL burners. especially when you have a deadline, and you keep burning coasters! i have been working with the s201 for about 3 years now, and only for one major problem, of my optical pick-up going faulty (about a US$600 fix) works like a charm. i have also worked with the pioneer a03, a04, and currently a05 to burn one-off's or what not. i must say, the pionner brand burners are the best IMO, however, the burners i have just mentioned have been nothing but problems, if its not the burner crapping out after a few months, its faulty laser pick-ups. i think i have spent more money on the consumer burners, than what the s201 cost including the fix!so i have to re-iterate, S201 ALL THE WAY...thats definitely our company work horse and has many more years in its future! fifer55 Comments posted by fifer55 from United States, March 05, 2004. Sorry Axel, but your claim "Its the ONLY DVD writer from which your DVD masters will be accepted by dublication labs." is completely FALSE! It MAY have been that way with a few labs when you wrote that, but in the meantime, any lab that WON'T take a DVD-R(G) for making a glass-master is shooting themselves in the foot in a BIG way, since a lot of others ARE. Aside from the fact that you can master to a DLT and deliver it that way which is MUCH cheaper, faster and you have a drive that is more useful in other ways (backups) than this drive. There is absolutely NO reason for buying this drive. Comments posted by Shorty from Other, October 22, 2002. Rated this writer 1 of 10. |

Bought one quite some time (nearly two years) ago for our professional DVD authoring station. Its the ONLY DVD writer from which your DVD masters will be accepted by dublication labs. Therefor its a must have for professional DVD authoring. I like that it has fuses (SMD, but they work) inside. Saved the drive from a power flash once, replaced fuses, works again. Its slow, but reliable. Will write only on dedicated authoring media, not on "general use" media. Will destroy "general use" media when inserted and starting to burn, since it stops with errors, but write enough to make it unsuable again. Anyway, i can recommend it for professionals only. For consumers and ambitious semiprofessionals who do single DVDs or very small series save the money and buy something like a A04 instead, and probably sell your DVDs along with a compatible settop dvd player (many collegues now do so, very successfully, with surprised customers!).
