| I recieved this DV-W58E burner in my Dell 4600 system 3-4 years ago. I only upgraded the firemware once which enabled 4x meda to be burned at 8x. IN 2004, one type of media that successfully burned at 8x was the RICOHJPN-R01-02 manufactured Memorex (grey spindle) which is no longer on the shelves. Today, I just tried the 8x & 16x Memorex RICOHJPN-R03-04(black spindle) but it only burns at 4x. Could it be that the firmware upgrade, which made it possible to burn 4x media at 8x, is now prohibiting us to burn 8x or 16x media at 8x? Or is it still just certain bands/manufactures that work? If ANYONE has successfully burned any media at 8x in the year 2006 please let me know or if anyone wants to discuss this issue, I think my email is visable. | I have had this burner for about 3 years know and I have had very little problems. It isn't the best out there but I have burned many DVD with it and I have had no problem. | Has >ANYONE< found >ANY< 8X DVD +R Media that will actually write at 8X on this drive?? If so PLEASE post it so I can quit wasting money on 8X & 16X Media that will only burn at 4X!! I have updated the firmware to version D.0N. If that did anything, I haven't found it yet. I have tried 3 different brands of 8X media and 1 brand of 16X media, but DVDinfo Pro always shows that there are only 2 Write Descriptors Available: CLV 4.0x 5540KBps & CLV 2.0x 2770KBps. I have certainly made my fair share of coasters with the higher speed media; ironically enough, the 4X media that I have used all worked pretty well... Strangly, reading all the other comments here has set my mind at ease--I have always had excellent luck with all the many TEAC components I have owned before. | New firmware D.0N available from Dell as today seems to deliver amongst other things CLV writing at 8x. | I notice that Dell has a firmware upgrade to flash the drive with to improve performance. The latest firmware is D.OJ. Since I just got my drive as a replacement for the original NEC 1100 which really sucked I don't know if it has the latest firmware or not. How can I tell the firmware my drive currently has? | I too recieved this writer in a bundle package from dell on a 8300 system. After paying a lot of money I would have expected a better drive. At the start the drive was reading and burning at 4x with no problems. I have used it with all of the below programs: Nero 6.1.120 OrLogix Record Now Max DVD Decyrptor Alcohol 120% DVD Clone 2 DVD Shrink 3.2 After about three months the drive has started giving serious problems. I thought at fist it was my system was too full so I emptied it and reformatted the drive. Loaded everything backon, (A lengthy process as im sure you know), but still no result. The drive now continuouslly will burn at single speed no matter what kind of media I use. So for a full 4.7GB disk I takes around 1hr 20mins to complete, which is unbelievably long at this stage. I recently installed a NEC 3500 16x Drive with DVD-R9 compatibility in a friends drive and on the same media it is burning a 4.7GB disk in around 20 mins. I have decided just to rip out the Teac and replace it with one of these drives. I would recommedn you all do the same. BAD JOB TEAC AND DELL, SHAME ON YOU!!! | I got this +R/+RW drive (firmware D.0C) in a Dell 8300 at the start of the year. Only 1 coaster so far(machine hung while burning, possibly unrelated), but Nero 6 wouldn't burn above 4x even on 8x media. Tried the Nero dynamic speed patch to no avail. Had given up all hope of 8x burns, then found D.0J firmware on Dell site. Nero now offers 4x, 6x and 8x options for both 8x and 4x media! I've had one successful 8x burn on Imation 4x blanks; time will tell if this was a fluke. Media used so far (all +R): TDK 4x (4x burn D.0C) Imation unspecified (2.4x burn D.0C) Memorex 4x (4x burn D.0C, still have some to try 8x) Philips 8x (4x and 8x with D.0J) Imation 4x (4x and 8x with D.0J) Imation +RW (2.4x burn) Seems like the D.0J upgrade has turned it into the drive I was meant to get in the first place! | Writer came with a Dell 8300 I just purchased. Firmware D.0J. Tested by backing up a movie I had (Shade) on a Fujifilm DVD+RW and Fujifilm DVD+R. They both played on two computer DVD-ROM's, but only the DVD+R played in my standalone player (Toshiba SD1700). The discs came in a package of 4 DVD+R and 1 DVD+RW from Best Buy in June 2004. Burned both at 4x in Nero 6.0.0.9 and authored in DVD Shrink 3.1.7.6. This was the first time I had ever burned a DVD. No problems so far. Comments posted by Andy from United States, June 13, 2004. | Like most posts on this writer, it came with my new Dell ordered in Feb 04. I ordered a +/- drive from Dell, this is only + and even though they are in breech of contract, they refuse to replace the unit, but this is supposed to be a review of Teac, not Dell. Well, Teac sux too. This drive is garbage. On Hypermedia (cheap media) it burns nothing but coasters. On TDK and Sony, (expensive media) it burns 50% coasters. Tested with Nero 6.3, NTI 6.7 Plat, Gear Pro Mastering 6.05, DVDXCopy Plat and DVD Shrink 3.1. No firmware updates have been issued for this obviously problem ridden drive. | Based on Dell's response to my complaints on this drive I have filed a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General against Dell. I also have sent a letter to all the Dell Board of Directors in regards to my complaint. | My Dell Dimension is under warrenty and so I purchased a DVD burner from Dell. When I recieved the drive (Teac DV-W58E), I installed it and the burning software that was bundled with it. Not only did the DVD+RW not burn, but my existing CD-RW stopped buring. After trying to resolve this myself, then with Dell tech support, it was determined that the Roxio Basic and the MyDVD software did not play well together. I blew away both the Roxio Basic and the MyDVD and installed Roxio Easy Media Creator 7. Both drives now work like a charm. I will use this drive mostly for burning data files for archive purposes. | Like he majority of users here, my writer was pre-installed on my Dell(xps)also. This baby worked like a dream straight out the box.I use it several ways: DVD X COPY EXPRESS(RF) with ANYDVD3.5.21 and CLONE DVD.My choice of media is verbatim + r(1x-4x).I've done about 5 burns with an average total time of 17-22 mins. with one totaling 40 minutes. | From what I understand the OEM for Memorex is Ritek. I have had no problems buring at 4x speed with Memorex 4X media but have since purchased Ritek 8X media and can only reach a burn rate of 4x with both Nero 6 as well as the Dell Sonic product. Dell Tech support over in India in the late evening is worthless. Rather that address the issue they were ready to pass the buck to customer service sales.
