| Solid drive Very quiet Some older media will not work in this drive CD-R record speed minimum is 16x, not recommended for Audio CD's. | Drive worked well out of the box; I installed the 'auto-firmware update' that the drive came with - what a mistake! When the firmware 1.02 came out and offered to install itself, I said 'sure', and I have not been able to burn at over 4x ever since. This is with FujiFilm 16x (RITEKF1) DVD-Rs from the same spindle that used to burn fine at 16x! Anybody have the firmware for 1.00? Comments posted by willy from Canada, April 04, 2007. | Had this for just over 2 weeks. Don't what that other dude was crying about -- I have successfully burned 10+ Memorex +R DL discs and 4 Verbatim +R DL discs. The Memorex say they are 2.4X, but this thing burned them at 4.1X -- good verify with IMGBurn and played flawlesslyl in 3 different players. The Verbatim say they are 2.4X and will burn at 6X on certain burners, mine have all burned at 6.1X -- good verify with IMGBurn and played flawlessly in 3 different players. Also burned a ton of single layer at 16X -- good verify with IMGBurn and played flawlessly in 3 different players. On the negative side, this thing takes FOREVER to spin up. It doesn't matter what you put in it: pressed disc dual or single layer, burned single or dual, or blank single or dual layer. It sits there spinning the disc and flashing the LED for at least a full minute... Kinda slow at ripping, but I have a seperate DVD-ROM for that anyway. I just wanted to see how it did. Max rip speed on a pressed DL disc was only about 6.4X. My last was an LG GSA-4040B, still going, but slowing down. I have literally burned over a thousand DVD's with it and many many CD's. | Just purchased this last night ($50.00 Can) and wow this thing is nice. Burned DVD-Rs about 10 of them with no problem at 18X. I realize that some DVD players will probably skip when played but my 5 players work perfectly at 18x burn. Next I will experiment with DVD+DL. Ciao for now. | I bought one of these the other day to burn +r DL disks. It is going back to be exchanged for a Pioneer. It won't recognize either Fuji DL or Memorex DL (I have a stack of each). When i spoke to LG they said that Memorex hadn't given then their "codes" before the drive was released, no reason as to why the Fuji DL disks wouldn't work. What , no software update on your website? Why would Memorex restrict which drives their disk worked on, wouldn't that put a crimp in their sales? It doesn't make sense. They said it "should" work with Verbatim and probably Sony. In my mind, that's like selling you a Ford and then telling you it won't run on gas from Shell or Chevron. I had always bought LG in the past because they were one of the first DVD recorders to also support RAM disks, If you don't intend to burn DL, then, they are a good drive.
