Apparently the LDW-451S is an updated version of the LDW-411S, and has an updated chipset for greater compatibility. I just got the 451S from Best Buy, which was advertised as a 411S, but there was absolutely nothing on the box that indicated the model number. I hope the UPC is the same so it works for my rebates!

The one I bought had a Nov. 2003 manufacture date, so it is probably updated with regards to firmware. My firmware rev. is GSB4

I bought this from Best Buy at 149 in early November. Did the firmware updates which are CRUCIAL and have burned about 75 data DVDs and 350 movie DVDs with no problem at all. The DVD-Rs are wayyyy more compatible with standard DVD players than DVD+Rs so those of you who are having problems with burnt movies, burn them on DVD-Rs and you will have no problem. I have played the Discs in Daewoo, Apex, Sony, Pioneer, Emerson, Polaroid, Playstation 2 and an XBOX and others with no problem. The software SONIC MYDVD that comes with it was crap. It made me think that my dvdburner is crap, but after buying DVD X COPY and making over 100 backups of my DVD collection with absolutely no problem, I realize the problem is software related, not related to this drive at all. I basically use whatevwer disks are on sale closest to a $1 per disc which for the most part will be the Fuji or Memorex 25-50pk of DVD-Rs. They always worked fine.
The software I used which burned them fine are DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Sonic, Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 & 6, MyDVD and Pinnacle Studio 7. My PC is a Emachines 2.2ghz with 512 ram running Windows XP. I may buy me a 2nd Lite-On 411s drive so that I can copy straight from one to the other. In my opinion, this is an EXCELLENT drive!!

I've had great results from this drive. It's in a Bytecc firewire enclosure; No problem flashing to 4SF0F - follow the directions on the Microsoft website about how to disable other optical drives and DMA on IDE controllers so you don't get conflict errors.

I've burned perfect backups on 3 4x BeAll +R discs, 1 4x Memorex +R, 1 2.4x Optorite +RW, and the +R and +RW discs included with the 411s, all using DVDShrink and RecordNow DX. All work in the 411s, my Toshiba laptop's DVD-ROM, a Samsung P721M, and Toshiba SDK510. Also burned a bunch of CD-RW. Haven't tried DVD-R yet. This drive is fast and easy to use, no coasters. Got it for $73 at Circuit City after they price-matched the Best Buy $79.99 sale.

Just bought this at Best Buy for $79 after rebates. I tried to flash the firmware to FS0F (the only one you can d/l from Lite-On now) but it says "No matched drive detected".

I verified on the carton and on the drive itself that it really is an LDW-411S. My BIOS and Windows XP both show it as an LDW-411S as well. I'm going to submit a problem to Lite-On tomorrow for this issue. Based on comments here I'm going to wait until I get the newer firmware on there before burning anything.

Have a 451 that is same as 411 spec wise??? Doesn't work well on DVD, CD was just fine. Cant read on my home mintek - disc error. Put a video clip on the 4xRW disc (supplied) and it played fine in the writer, but in my DVD- rom drive skipped terrible. Wrote a VOB file on a verbatim 2.4xRW and it played fine in the DVD-rom, but still not in the mintek. Wrote at 1x on the supplied RW and still skipped in my DVD-rom. There is something wrong and since there is no info at liteon - have to return to Best buy. $79 was just too cheap. It did burn very quickly, but if you can't read it then not much of an advantage.

I purchased the LiteOn LDW411S for $129. at Circuit City, it had a $40. Mail In Rebate at the time. I ordered Ritek 4X -R Media from Meritline.Com and have backed up a few movies with DVD Shrink and Nero 6.0. The Burner works flawlessly and the movies I burned work beautifully. Well worth the money spent on the LiteOn. Best Buy has it on sale again starting Sunday, 12/14 for $129. with a $50. Mail In Rebate offer. At this price, it's a Steal.

I had a Sony DRU510A before. The Sony's read speed is very slow, and I had a few coaster due to drive stop responding. Updating F/W and run Sony DSS only helped a little.

Then I bought this drive at BestBuy's after Thanksgiving sale for $79.99 after rebate. After trying it out with F/W 0F, I return the Sony DRU510A right away. This drive can do everything the Sony does, but at half the price.

So far Imation +/-R, Fuji +RW, Khypermedia +RW all worked perfectly. Only Liquid Video -R from Circuit City has problems, but those discs don't seem to work well with any drive anyway.

+ comes with 1 each blank +R and +RW disc
- old software, Sonic My DVD 4.0

FYI: If you are running Nero 5.5x, you will need to upgrade to 5.5.10.54 in order for the drive to be supported. Finally figured it out (with help from another forum on this site). Recorder does great with the firmware update.

the website is www.centralcomputer.com. sorry. never heard of STI. However it works for Liteon at 4x.

Got it from bestbuy in Thanksgiving for $80(after rebate). Works great. Flash to newest firmware right away. No problem install and recognize with Win XP pro. Try to copy using Copy to DVD 3.41 using using STI brand(1-4x)(from www.computercentral.com, $16 for 25 pack after $5 rebate). The write recognized as 4x and finished less than 20 minutes.(I am in heaven) Not play on the Toshia but work on liteon lvd-2001. Uninstall 3.41 install 3.36.10 and try again. The DVD now plays on my Toshiba and Digi player. (I have 3 DVD players). I am very happy now. I guess sometime if the dvd not play on your dvd player is combination of either your player's firmwre or recording software. And, sometime new version of software may nto better than old one, like my case. I give it 9 it because one of the STI dice it didn't play very smooth at the end of the disc but it plays. I have not play it with the lite on to see if that's disc problem or the player problem. This a great drive.

using DVD decrypter 3.17
copy to dvd 3.36.10 (don't use 3.41)
DvdtoOne 1.3

If you are running windows ME beware! I recently purchased this drive and installed the hardware without any problems. The DVD came with enclosed software for Sonic DVD ver 4.5 but no documentation. The only thing the manual said was to install the attached software to burn DVD's. So, that's what I did. Unfortunetly, the Sonic software is written for XP systems and does not run under ME. But nothing stopped the software from loading on my system. When I tried to run the Sonic software my system locked up. When I re-booted my registry was corrupted and I could not restart windows. The message I got was to reload my operating system. I tried doing this, but since the registry was corrupt the new load didn't help at all. I also tried to run utilities to fix the registry but it didn't help. The only way I was able to get my computer running again was to buy windows XP and install it over ME. Now everything runs fine, but I wasn't expecting to have to do this. There should have been some documentation someplace about the software only running on XP. Also, if you do run into this problem DO NOT call Dell or Microsofts help centers. The 'expert' technical staff suggested that I reformat my hard drive (FDISK) and rebuild my system from scratch. Of course if you do this you lose everything on the hard drive which is not a good thing.

Any idea of a compatibility problem with Nero 551042?

Otherwise, worked GREAT using Windows Movie Maker for capture and edit, then MyDVD 4.0 which came with the recorder.

Hey guys...just wanted to give you an update. I've read around some more and discovered these tips.
1. When burning a copy of a movie let's say, ALWAYS VERIFY THE BACKUP (all DVD burning software should have this option) By doing so, you can avoid going through all the menus to check for errors as I stated I did in a prior post below. I found this VERIFICATION procedure to extend the time for the whole copy process, but the plus side is that I can catch errors and also "somewhat" confirm that the burn process was successful. (All failed verifications on burned media proved to have pixelation and stuttering on my DVD players).
2. I returned the COMPUSA Princo 1X DVD-R media as well as the Memorex DVD-R 25 Pack 4X media. I had mixed results with the two brands enough to be annoyed and return them. I thought I had to pay a 15% restocking fee with COMPUSA but I managed to convince the manager that I buy stuff from them all the time and would take a gift card instead of crediting my credit card. He agreed! What I discovered is that the COMPUSA media and Memorex media were unreliable. When I looked up these brands on this website, I discovered that Princo (Compusa brand) and PRODISC (Memorex) were the actual manufacturers that have a spotty track record.
CONCLUSION: Buy the media as recommended in this FAQ I found in one of the forums here:
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=172496
After doing some shopping around the web, I found the prices to be incredibly cheap for let's say a 25 pack of DVD-R media for $28 shipped (one brand recommended by this forum post)! I ended up saving the same amount of money ordering online as I had from buying the COMPUSA and MEMOREX media. I just ordered a 25 pack of Ritek DVD-R media and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival!

Hi again, I'm the Nathan post. The problem with my 411 was not the 411 but an intermittent IDE cable. After I replaced the IDE everything worked fine.
The DVDs I burned would not run on the APEX DVD player, but ran fine on the computer. I loaded the recommend flash update and it works like a charm; no problem reading R or RWs on the APEX.
The biggest problem I had configuring the system (under W2K Pro) was setting the region code. You have to have a DVD loaded in the drive to set the region code. The Monsters Inc DVD would not let me set the region code. However, Miss Congeniality worked just fine.
One of the things I did not like is that Sonic DVD tries doing mothership communications. I really do not like this unless I request it.
At $89 USD its a great deal. At $149 list, I'd buy an A06.

I totally agree with cybercho. I want to point out one more software problem. If you are trying to copy a commercial DVD and it does not work, read around more before making a comment. Compression from 8.5GB to 4.7GB, DVD5 or DVD9, region code, ripping speed, etc. can all result in why you cannot copy a disk. As to hardware, 80pin/40pin connector, master or slave setting, DMA2 enable, etc., if you have no idea what I am talking about. Read more before you make a choice.

Bought the drive at Bestbuy for $79 after rebate. Bought a 25 pack of Imation +R and a 25 pack of -R and have had no problems using Alcohol, Nero or DVDXCopy.

I agree with DISTRO's comments (right below). Most people will have problems with DVD writers just because they don't understand the nature of hardware and software too well. If you're not too familiar or have only a basic knowledge of computers and don't want to go through all the hassle, buy a Pioneer DVD-Writer. However, if you know how to troubleshoot, upgrade firmware, etc, it's a good idea to save some money and get this Liteon. I too got it at Best Buy and tested the hell out of it after upgrading firmware. My conclusion.... It works great on all the familiar name brand DVD media such as Memorex, Ritek, Fujifilm, etc. It also works OK with the cheap COMPUSA FMI (Princo manufactured) media but I had slight skipping problems and picture quality issues when playing it on my Apex 1500 but it played perfectly on my Toshiba SD1800 and two of my laptop DVD players. Just remember, you get what you pay for in terms of media. I didn't get any coasters with COMPUSA media but I'll find subtle problems when playing through the DVD's as mentioned above. If you don't mind losing one or two to coasters in a 10 pack let's say, then it's worth the cheap price isn't it? If you're the type of person that'll go crazy when one of the media is bad and panic, then don't buy cheap media. Spend some more money and look for rebate deals! I am a very thorough person and went through ALL the menu choices to check for problems before I came to this conclusion! Most people's idea of a test is just being able to play the copied DVD! You have to go through each of the menus and see if you can watch the first few seconds of each item. Some of you may say I'm crazy or it's not worth it to do this. Personally, I love computers and technology and enjoy doing this kind of thing. Just last week I had no interest in DVD writers until I saw the Best Buy ad for $80 after rebate and considering my CD burner is a Liteon and it has a good reputation, I decided to take the plunge. I also just discoverd this website and found it extremely helpful. That's why I decided to write this lengthy review. Don't be afraid to take the plunge. Stick with one brand of media that works well with your Liteon and DVD players (desktop or computer) at home and you'll be happy.

Had it for little over a week now. Thought I would take a chance on it at circuit city for $80. Had some trouble at first but I evenually updated the firmware and havent had a bit of trouble out of it using Nero 6. I was scared of buying this drive at such a cheap price and reading all of the problem comments from this drive and others I got the immpression that DVD Writers are very had to work with. Such as getting a good drive along with finding the media that it will work with. I have come to the conclusion that a very big majority of the problem comments with many of the these drives are from people that wouldnt know a hardware problem from a software problem. I not saying that there are not real problems out there but, dont put so much weight in some of the comments you read. These are the people that have to call Tech Support because they cant get on the internet beacause their shortcut is missing.

Picked this up at Bestbuy for $79 after rebate. First thing I did was flash to the latest firmware (OF). Have burned about 8 DVDs using the FujiFilm brand that Bestbuy also had on sale. No problems at all burning to +R and -R Fuji discs. My 2 cousins also purchased this drive and they too have had excellent luck. Great drive for the price. Simply can not be beat.

Have not tested other media but am glad to say that FujiFilm at bestbuy works great. Not 1 single coaster. They even play great on the V99 DVD player that BB had for $20 after rebates.

Burns DVD-Video on DVD+R/RW like a charm. Even on quality DVD-R discs.
BUT!! Data and Playstation2 backups on DVD-R sucks big time, UNREADABLE on PS2 and Pioneer DVD-Rom drive in my PC. Sometimes even the 411S itself can't read it's own burned DVD-R discs!!!
I tried all firmware revisions and burning tools on different quality media like RitekG04, Ricoh and Verbatim. Had ± 20 coasters up to now. Also LiteOn service sucks big time.
They gave me (and others) always their standard reply:
"Please update the firmware of your drive to the latest version FS0F. It will fix this problem." NOT!!!!!
So people, don't buy this piece of sh*t! Buy quality like Pioneer, Plextor and so on.

Just bought one the day after Thanksgiving at Best Buy ($79.99). Flash it with the new firmware before any DVD recordings, it runs like a champ from speeds X2.4 - X4. Use software: DVD2ONE, Nero 6.XX. Media: Memorex -R X4 and +R X2.4, TDK +R 4X, Philips +R X2.4. Will try more media +RW this weekend and do a follow-up report. Can't give a 10 yet until try out some more. However, I am a happy camper!!!!

I purchased this drive for $79 at Office Depot after having them price match with Best Buy. The retail box comes with a DVD+R & DVD+RW. They both burned with no problems with burn speeds ranging from 2.4x - 4x using Roxio CD Creator 6.0.0.171 and the latest firmware of FS0F. I have burned 3 DVD backups using DVDXCOPY two being +R media from Imation and one being DVD-R Imation with no problems in my HA-9000 DVD Player and my Toshiba SD-4800. I have burned one XBOX backup on -R Imation with no problems also. Due to not trying any other media besides Imation and the stuff that comes with it, I only rate it a 9. Will post an update when I've tried more media.
