New Firmware for LDW-451s That now supports the booktype tool!! Firmware Version is "GSB7" dated 1/15/2004

I have upgraded to this firmware and have burned 4 ritek, 3 Memorex, and 1 optodisc. All are good.

You can't find this Firmware on Lite-on's site yet so here is a link for those who want it.

http://mysite.verizon.net/res0mtl8/LDW-451S_GSB7.zip

and no this is not hacked firmware, it was taken off an OEM drive.

Worked very good initially, later it started making noise and now, just doesn't work!!!

Maybe just a bad piece, I hardly burnt 10 disks, donno. Anyway going to Office Depot to see if they replace, its under 30 days. I don't see any warranty information inside box. Does anybody?

Hello,

I have the Liteon 411 on a Windows 98SE PC. I have used +R, -R, +RW and -RW. On a Pioneer DV363 everything has been compatible. On my Toshiba SD2200 the -R and +R have been compatible. I did use a program that I think is called "booktype.exe" which can set the booktype on a DVD+R and DVD+RW to DVD-ROM. Then once you record to the DVD it will be recognized as a DVD-ROM by the computer and any standalone DVD player. This increases the compatibility with older DVD players. This was how I got my Toshiba SD2200 to recognize the DVD+R. One thing you have to make sure of is that your ASPI drivers are up to date. The program refused to work on one of my computers until I updated the ASPI drivers (from Adaptec.com). You can also go to cdfreaks.com for more info.

I had encountered problem with burning DVD after I had updated to Nero 5.5.10.54 from 5.5.10.50. I am using RiTek G40 DVD-R. I had downgraded to back to 5.5.10.50 and create DVD without any problem.

well, i work at circuit city, and i bought this dvd 411S for the price minus rebate(cause thats better than cost), so i got it for 80. not too shabby! on top of that it installed great, without any errors. first though i did run into some flak. i have a dell and Roxio was running, cause me to get the blue screen of death :( so i dl'd the new firmware, and ended the system process for directcd in task manager, and my writer worked great. i only had it fail once so far, but it was on a RW :) so it was no biggy. anyway, i reccomend this writer to any college student on a budget :) jsut dl the firmware, and dont use cheap DVD's (i use memorex) and youll be great

I've been using the 411S for a couple of months at this point. The first few writes came up with errors at the end of the disk. However, after flashing the drive with the newest firmware ...SOF from http://www.liteonit.com.tw/ODD/english/english-load-firmware.htm#LDW there haven't been any problem since.

I bought this 411s writer but was surprised with 451s in the box. Never mind. I have burned about 10 - 15 DVDs without any problem. But then last day i tried to burn as usual, but DVD had errors at the end of disc.
From that time i cant burn any media properly. It even has some unusual noices inside. But strange thing is, that I can successfuly burn on 4x DVD+RW shipped with the writer. But no success with other DVD-RW (Multidisc, Imation) and even DVD-R (Multidisc) of which i have already burned a lot.
Then i tried new firmware, but no success (dont know if it isnt worse yet). Is there any way for downgrade for 451s?
Tnx for any advice or experience.

This burner works GREAT with LEGIT discs, but when I tried to throw some pirated discs at it, it kept giving me read errors... But hey, it didn't say 'WORKS GREAT WITH PIRATED COPIES TOO!' on the box, so can't complain there. :P

One question tho, can it burn 9.4 GB (+/-/R/RW, whichever) discs too? I hate to waste money to buy a blank and find out it doesn't work at all. Thanx in advance!!!

My firmware upgrade kept failing until I disabled the other CDRW drive. I upgraded to FS0F a while ago; I was able to write to DVD+RW RITEK disk properly. However, it would not write to RICOH or MCC DVD+R. I upgraded to FS0H and it works fine!

Would have rated it a 10 except for these problems.

Regarding my previous post, I made one error. I am using FS0F firmware, not FS0H.

I purchased this drive for $79 after rebate from Best Buy and updated it to the FS0H firmware. I give it a 10 rating. I have used it with Imation and TDK DVD-R which read perfectly on my Toshiba SD2200 and Pioneer DV363 players. The Toshiba will only read DVD-R, whereas the Pioneer reads all formats. I have not burned one coaster, and I am using DVD Decryptor, DVD Shrink, and CloneDVD to rip and burn.

I have difficulty understanding some of the problems encountered by others regarding this drive and the software mentioned. One person made mention that DVD Dycryptor has problem with the FAT file system but not with NTFS. A little difficult to believe since I am using Windows 98SE with Fat32. There have also been questions regarding the 4GB file size limitation of FAT32. No problem because the program (DVD Decryptor) appears to break down the files. I have used both the ISO image option and the File option with DVD Decryptor and have had no problems. In fact, I would be delighted if all hardware and software I've had worked as well as this drive and the software mentioned above.

Suggestions when buying this drive, or any other, is to verify the firmware first. Also, when installing the necessary programs make sure you have limited programs running in the background that may corrupt the install. Especially antivirus programs. This is especially true for larger programs like Nero.

I think most problems that others have encountered have been due to software issues and firmware issues more than anything else. I just wish I could have gotten my external USB drive working this well.

Also, thank to all for the excellent information on this website. I was not going to purchase this drive at first, but when I saw that the upgraded firmware resolved 99% of the problems, and also saw the ratings go up, I decided to go for it. I have not regretted this purchase at all.

I was using Princo 1X media and burnt 5 coasters straight on FSOF firmware. I updated to FSOH and all works perfectly and it bumped up the burn speed to 2X.

bought the drive for $89 with rebates at circuit city. Not as cheap as some, but I can't complain. With the right firmware it seems to work perfectly.

Do not upgrade to FS0H unless you are on FS0G. I was on firmware version FS0F and once I upgraded, I could burn only coasters. I had to use Flash Fix to roll back to FS0F and now I am fine again.

I recently purchased the LiteOn 411s from Circuit City. $69 after rebates. Updating the firmware to F series was a snap. I had previously purchased Memorex 4X DVD-R because I inteded to purchase a Pioner 106. I decided to buy locally in case I needed to return it. Turns out the discs were CMC Magnetic AF1. I ordered from Best Buy about Nov 28, 03, a month before the burner.
They work together excellently!
No issues with the media at all. I used Smartripper 2.26 and DVDshrink 3.01. Thats all I needed.
It is my first burner and here is what I have noticed.
8x speed is not a necessity at all.
I'd buy a 4x on a good deal rather than an 8x at full price.
Why?
Because the process takes time. First rip, then analyze, then recode, finally burn. All other steps take longer than burning (So you don't sit and wait for it to finish burning).
Also, using dvd decrypter requires an NTFS format. Smartripper works just as well and can work with a fat32 format.

I would not hesitate to recommend the LiteOn 411s or the CMC magnetics AF1 discs (Black base container, purple dye, purchased from best Buy at $59, now $49, 4x DVD-R).

I hope this helps the other fence sitters.

One more thing. I read tons of posts before buying a DVD burner. Most problems seemed to indicate a problem with compatability between firmwares and media, following simple instructions, or just plain stupidity.
This process for backing up is movies is very simple with the softwares I used.

Oh yeah, results: My first 4 movies backed up to DVD-r. No coasters at all. Play on My Sony DVD player DVP NS315, 2 years old and my CyberHome CHDVD 300, 4 months old.

Very happy after about a month and around 100 DVD's burned. I updated the firmware on the advice of a friend and have used Memorex DVD-R and DVD+RW. So far so good. Mainly use Intervideo DVDCopy, which has bugs with previews and extras but generally keeps the main content in good shape and only takes an hour or so. I will look at patching my Intervideo DVDCopy version soon.

I got the 411s when it first came out . It took a couple of firmware updates to get it to be the drive it always should have been. I am really happy I got this drive now. There is apparently a patch out to turn it into the 811s.
It is discussed on other forums but I can't find it.
If I find the link, I will put it up if I am allowed by the mods.

Got this drive (411) for $92 (TOTAL) after sales tax and rebate from Bestbuy about a month ago. Where the hell are people buying them for $69.99!?!?! ANYWAYS, at first I burned a few -r's and 1 -rw and none played in a standalone dvd player. Upgraded the firmware and everything is great. Burned over 50 dvd's so far using Nero and all is well. I've been using Ritek g04's from Meritline.

For the money it's good. I'm sure the Pioneer and Sony and "better" drive's, but they also cost $30-$50 more.

Got for $100 from office depot after circuit-city price match. I am using it in a USB 2.0 external enclosure as I have laptop, made it master to run fine.

burned couple of Philips DVD+R 2.4x (officedepot buy 25pk get one free, $50), no coasters, plays flawless on my Apex AD-3201 and PC as well. Comes with 1 +r and 1 +rw sample media, +rw is useful for experimental burnings.

It came with FS05, not yet upgraded till it works fine. Sonic myDVD is awesome, has many option, only got problem while adding blank folder, but if you add them first then filled ones, it works fine.

Ritek you won't find at you local store. Net only. The G04 4x -R works great with this burner.

The Fuji and Imation 4x + discs at Best Buy were Ricoh last time I purchased.

I actually haven't used this drive yet for DVD purposes, though everything seems to be working ok on a CD basis, which leads me to the reason for my post:

The manual sez that RICOH and RITEK media are recommended for all 4 types of media (+R/RW & -R/RW), only I've never seen those two brands in any of my local stores. Do these two companies license their media to other distributors, such as Khypermedia or some other lesser known ones?... In other words, we've all seen BURNERS by certain mfr'rs that license their drives to other companies & they re-badge 'em (my Iomega ZipCD that is a rebadged Plextor, or my Cendyne burner that is actually a Samsung, for example), so does this also apply to CD/DVD *media* (hopefully)?...

If so, please someone tell me *what* brands of DVD media I can buy that would actually BE Ritek and/or Ricoh disks...
Thx.

I bought this at CompUSA under the brand BUSLink, didn't know it was a LiteOn LDW-411S untill I got it home and opened the box, apparently BUSLink just repackages Lite-On and NEC brands (you never know which you'll get untill you open the box), I'm very happy I got a LDW-411S. I originally had an Optorite that I returned because in spite on being a +/-R dirve it would only burn to +R and +RW media, with this drive I have yet to make a DVD coaster, I did make one CD-R coaster, but that was my fault (this drive burns CD-R's at 40x! make sure the CD-R blank media you use can support 40x, if not you have to burn at a slower rate).

Ok other comments: DVDXCopy works great (original and XPress versions), TMPEG DVD Author works great, Nero I did have problems with.. Nero 6 (boxed retail) does not work with this drive, there are documented problems. You'll have to upgrade to 6.3 (about 100-MEG of free patch downloads will upgrade you from 6.0 to 6.3), if you don't have Nero and you're thinking of buying it, just download the 6.3 trial and register it.

Drive works great with all media I've thrown its way: Memorex DVD+R, TDK DVD+R, TDK DVD+RW, Sony DVD-R, CompUSA (generic) DVD+R.

Probably the best burner at the low end of the market.

Had mine for a week now!

Works great. ( I tried the CompUSA cheap DVD's (1x) and they are real bad.) Don't ever use/buy them for this drive.

Ritek G04, Memorex 4x DVD+RW work great.

These media also play fine on Sony DAV-c770 and Apex 1100W

LiteOn was purchased at CirCity for $69 after rebates. Standard IDE install. I didnt use any of the included software.

DVD back-ups via Shrink DVD 2 or 3 Beta. Burning by Nero 6.0 All discs have worked well so far (LiquidVideo 2.4X DVD+R, TDK 4X DVD+R).

I'd give it a full 10 if I didnt have some trouble getting Nero to recognize it...Nero's fault or LiteOn's? I dont know.

Love the player. Couldn't burn Verbatim Digital Vinyl CD-R or Mashua DVD+R without firmware upgrade. Afterward, burned perfectly and quickly. Got it for $80 at best buy on Black Friday
