Upgraded to win xp...intervideo dvd copy express is truly a one click activity[with anydvd]. Drive has performed flawlessly on all media i've tried. All disks play on my playstation...my hp laptop only plays dvd-r [panasonic drive] while my daughter's hp laptop [sony drive]plays both -r and +r. go figure...for 80 bucks it has already payed for itself Comments posted by ron71157 from Other, January 10, 2004. Installed well, upgraded to firmware 47. Copied "sandlot" from my other dvd-rom using intervideo xcopy express on the included ritek dvd+rw. Took awhile but movie plays perfectly in my playstation 2. Have to upgrade to windows xp to see how it really works due to copy express limitation and also ezcd creator will update when I can.... for 80$so far so good. Bought it at OfficeMax for $80 after rebates. Updated the firmware right away as suggested on this site and on MA's site. Couldn't get it to even write to the RiTek RW supplied in the box, so I took it back and bought a TDK 440N. Had problems with the TDK until I updated the firmware and used only TDK RW media. Got the burner From OfficeMax for $79 after rebates a couple of weeks ago. So far I have tried two different -R's. Prior to upgrading the firmware on 12/22/03, from 0038 to 0047, the sony media would not play in the burner or my dvd player that i also have in my pc. It did play on a couple of other dvd players, but not Apex. The other -R media was Compusa brand and when I burned movies to them, they would not play in anything at all. After the firmware upgrade, the Compusa media (1X)now play in all dvd players i have tried. Have not yet tried the sony's again since the firmware upgrade. I have not yet tried the +RW that came with it either or any -RW's. overall not a bad burner for the price. just need to find a media that works with most dvd players. Got this at OfficeMax, too. But I ended up returning it because it wouldn't write DVD-RW's as advertised (at all). I even tried their latest firmware upgrade. (Boy they're sure burning through the firmware revision numbers in a hurry...bad sign) I tried three different brands of media which work on my office Pioneer A04 drive just fine. Even though the Micro Advantage seemed to do DVD-R's at 4X just fine, I didn't want to support a company that misrepresents their products. Comments posted by AlanC from Other, December 18, 2003. I'm spoiled. My Sony 500AX burns everything I throw at it and play on my standalones. Bought this burner for my second computer becvause of the great price at OfficeMax.. The Princo's burned with it freeze up on my Phillips 724. The +RW that came with it plays ok. I have upgraded to firmware 47 which eliminated initial skipping on playback with Microsoft Media and PowerDVD. But still playing on standalones is a problem depending what media you use. I'm going to try Ritek later today. Also, the burner screwed up my wireless LAN when configured as the Master... this problem was eliminated when I made it the slave. After trying various combinations of DVD X Copy Express and DVD X Copy (regular), Khypermedia DVD-R and DVD+R, and LiquidVideo DVD-R, I've come to these conclusions: It works very well with the right media. I'm 100% successful with the LiquidVideo blanks, and I get 100% coasters when using the Khypermedia DVD-R or DVD+R. So it's a good value for an $80 (after rebate) drive and works as advertised, sort of. Comments posted by KL from Other, December 10, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

Had some success with this DVD but ended up returning it for a Pioneer. Had problems writing and copying CD. Burner would show it accepted a blank cd thenin the middle of copying it would ask for a blamk cd. On the DVD side running decrypter it had problems reading sectors on the DVD. twice it made it to 4 % done then all the way to 95% before it crashed. Finally it did make a good read but not worth the trouble. Comments posted by Dennis C from Other, December 09, 2003. Rated this writer 5 of 10. |

Is it the hwr or the s/w(Roxio EZ6 as bundled)? OS is WinME w/ P3@1gHz. CD's & CD-RW's do just fine (faultless actually) since MA upgrade to firmware 43, but DVD writing/formatting is a different story. Drag2disc, the new v. of Roxio's (formerly..) DirectCD packet writing wants to run Scandisc on reinsertion of any DVD+RW media (oem Ridata & Memorex so far). Disc properties for DVD+RW media only display the proper info as to Free /Used /File system BEFORE eject - reinsertion gives 0 Free /2+GB Used /(& changes File system from Drag-to-Disc to UDFRDR) as well as denying write access to a "read only" disc. This anomalous behavior doesn't happen w/ CD-R, CD-RW, DVD±R, or DVD-RW media. Roxio Disc Copier gives proper info for DVD+RW's, but it's a bit out of the way for such basic info. Seems to burn okay, but been fighting the anomalies for a week+ now (+the Roxio reg/support discussion boards) - 1/2way to taking it back to O-Max for something that's fully functional. note: noticed in the Roxio DC for the hwr properties that this unit writes all formats (except DVD-RAM) but only reads the short list.. I tried another memorax + R dvd media and it burned fine however would not play on my panasonic s35 and panasonic rv30. It read fine on the computer itself. Not a problem since the panasonics are rated at dvd -r and nothing for the rv30. I then used fuji - r dvd on two separate backups and they burned fine and played fine on both panasonics. Not a bad burner for $80 after rebates and if I use the correct media such as my players state, this has been a good purchase for the money. Comments posted by david from Other, December 03, 2003. This writer was able to do everything I needed, except that the DVD-Rs that I produced from it would not play in my panasonic RP62 DVD set-top player. Every other DVD player I tried (Toshiba, Oritron, Philips, and Pioneer) would accept DVD+-R(W)s I made with this drive. Once I replaced this with a TDK indidvd, the discs I made worked fine with my Panny DVD player--I changed nothing else in the process, only the DVD writer. So, I would have to recommend this writer for anyone except those who have an RP62. A very good value. Comments posted by Jason from Other, December 03, 2003. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

I bought this writer as an external dvd burner. With roxio it would only burn at 1x, but with nero and dvd decryper it burns at 4x on usb. Have a lot of coaster R- but burned them with roxio, so will try R- with nero and decrypter. It does burn perfect + dvd that play in any player for me though. By far the most bang for the buck i've seen so far. Comments posted by jimdaddy from Other, December 03, 2003. Rated this writer 7 of 10. |

Bought it in officemax for $129. Yet to apply for the $50 MIR. I am yet to try copying/writing all 4 formats of DVD and CD-RW. Only tried CD-R so far. Now the problem. I find this drive is very less tolerant when it comes to reading old audio-cd. I have few disks which has very minor scratches, but they play with absolutely no problem in my other drives (CD-R, Dell CD-ROM, IBM Thinkpad DVD-CDR combo and my car-cd-player). But this drive skips clips of audio and jumps. I tried the same after doing the firmware upgrade from their site and problem still persists. Ruled out any software (media-player, control-panel settings) related issues. There is hardly anything the user can control interms of read buffer, speed, error-checking etc. Comments posted by ether from Other, December 03, 2003. Rated this writer 5 of 10. |

Purchased from OfficeMax today for $129 plus a $50 rebate I'll have to send in later... $79 total. To be honest I did not think this drive would work worth a darn. But I ran a bunch of the following media without any problems: Accu™ 4.7GB DVD-R 4X General (2 Discs) DVDPro 4.7GB DVD-R 4X General (2 Discs) Optodisc™ 4.7GB DVD-R 4X General (2 Discs) BeAll™ 4.7GB DVD-R 4X General (2 Discs) I ran all disk and burned at 4X without any problems. I purchased the disk online in a "test" package. In addition I ran about 10 CD-R without any problems. Since I mainly will use this drive as a computer backup drive I did not test any movies. I will only use this drive as a backup to keep my business files at different locations... the Easy CD Creator 6 it came with is a real good deal as well... it allows spanning of disk which helps me in my backups since I can put backups over a couple of CDs, if needed. One other thing I'll mention, I purchased this drive and placed in a usb 2.0 external case. It works like a charm in this case, although I can't upgrade the firmware like this, I'll have to place in a desktop case this weekend to do that, unless I can figure it out. I'm running this drive off my laptop. All in all for $79 this can't be beat. The micro advantage website is also a good source of information and firmware for this drive: www.microadvantage.com . I'll post later if I have any problems. Comments posted by JTM from Other, December 02, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Purchased this item from office depot for $129 with $50 rebate. The first one I got had a box that had shipping problems. I burned one dvd using memorex +r dvd media and it burned fine however would not play on my panasonic s35 player. Then next day it would read but not write on imitation 1x media then it would not read anything. I returned in and got a new one. The next one had the same problems, difficulty reading and then I read the post about the firmware. I upgraded the firmware from 37 to 45 from the webpage tool. Now it did not read the Memorax +r I just made a backup of however it did make a good backup on the included +rw media they gave in the box. This did play on the panasonic s35 dvd player which states it only can play back dvd-r. I will go ahead and try again tonight with different media and post it when I get more results. I will wait to send in the rebate before keeping this drive until I feel it has no problems. I bought a spindle of 25 imitations media and will return them to get something else. They are too slow. The drive goes pretty fast with the xcopy express. Comments posted by david from Other, December 02, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

I too got this at OfficeMax few days ago for $99 after rebate. No problem with installation and CD recording. I had some issues with recording DVDs, but once I upgraded the Frimware it all works perfectly. I've been using Verbatim Datalife disks without problem. Disks play in my computer, my wifes computer and my Aiwa DVD player. I used MyDVD 5.0 to author my DVD. Comments posted by mark from Other, November 15, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Picked up this drive from OfficeMax few days ago for $99 after rebate. No problem with installation and recording. Works smoothly without a problem at all. However, all the DVD burned (used Memorex DVD-RW), it could only be played in itself, not in my Apex and other PC DVD-ROM drives. Other PC drivers could see the data in explorer, but not playable in PowerDVD. Tried using different recording software, Nero and CloneDVD (have not tried EZCD6 yet), all makes no difference. Finally did a firmware upgrade, to the latest, and it seemed to solve the problem. The recorded DVD now can play in Apex (with a few tries), and in regular PC DVD-ROM. The firmware flash works ok, although takes quite long (approx. 10min), first i thought it hang and almost rebooted! For this price, it's not a bad deal, considering it actually works. Bought this at Office Max $129 after the rebates. So far so good. Using KHypermedia DVD-r 4.7gb discs. No coasters yet. Burned one disc with 25,000 images with bundled Roxio software. Also burned 2 movies with DVD X Copy Express. Looks like that software causes some read errors at the end, but I read elsewhere here that other users had the same problem with DVD X Copy Express. Swapping over to DVD Shrink and Roxio. Overall I'm very happy with a dual format recorder for under $150. Comments posted by Billy from Other, October 25, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Have had this drive for a month with no problems. I have used maxell, TDK and Memorex both + and - disks have created about 80 moive's from my vcr tapes with no problem. Have used 321's software to backup my DVD's for the kids to watch and it's been preforming great. For a 150 bucks you can't ask for more. Comments posted by Neth from Other, October 20, 2003. Bought this one for $99 from officeMax.com last week. The dvd+rw comes with it works great just like described by other comments. But the memorex 4x DVD+R is not working with it and the burned DVD can only be watched by this writer, not dvd-rom or dvd player. Waste 4 of my dvd+Rs. If you want to update the firmware to version 40 from their web site, you got to be careful. The update ruined my Window ME OS, not bootable anymore, even in safe mode. Lucky I have Window2000 also installed in the pc and able to rescue the files. My PC is P4, and have tried Nero6, CloneDVD. Will return it today. I've had this drive for over a week now, and it lives up to what the company promises. In fact, I get more from this drive than I initially expected. It's been writing -r dics smoothly and flawlessly with Nero 6. In addition, it has been doing fine with +rw discs. Unfortunately, I don't have any +r or -rw discs to try it out with, but I'm sure it would do fine. In addition, it's still burning cds very well. Furthermore, this drive has not made any coasters since the first day I used it; and that was the fault of easy cd and dvd creator, not the drive. Finally, this drive is actually made by a company called BTC, it's just rebranded with the micro advantage name. You really can't go wrong with this drive, especially for $130. Also, if this drive doesn't work for you, then it's probably because your computer does not meet the minimum requirements. Comments posted by Incognito from Other, October 18, 2003. Got it two days ago. The +rw disc that came with it and the memorex +rw's worked fine. It made coasters of all three Memorex +r discs that I tried. I also tried an Optidisc -r, which it also made a coaster of. I will be returning this piece of junk today. Comments posted by Josh from Other, October 17, 2003. Rated this writer 1 of 10. |

I picked up this drive yeasterday. It will cost aboyt $130 after the mail-in rebate. Anyway, I learned quickly that Easy Cd and DVD creator does not get along well with this drive. Easy CD and DVD creator kept messing up the TOC (Table of contents.) All that means is that the drive burned the data, but it didn't close the DVD properly, so it would not play on a drive other than a DVD burner. I updated the firmware too, but I didn't notice much of a difference. Here's the great news though... Once I started using Nero 6 to burn discs, everything worked out just fine. Therefore, I resoned that EC&DC is a flawed program. Bottom line: If you're going to get this drive, use NERO. (By the way, I used to have problems with my HP CD burner while using easy cd and dvd creator, so the problem is definitiely the program.) Nero has been burning the DVDs flawlessly, and that's what matters. This drive also burns cds really quickly. My computer can't sustain the 40x burning speed, so it maxes out at about 30x for me. Anyway, this drive burns cds really really well. I gave this drive a high rating because it functions as advertised, and it was my fault that it messed up a few discs; well the drive didn't mess up the discs, Easy CD & DVD creator did. P.S. I've been using Fuji DVD-Rs for this drive. Comments posted by Incognito from Other, October 11, 2003. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Got this at OfficeMax a few days ago. Looks like it is a rebranded BTC DRW 1004IM. I must have gotten a defective unit. First disk I tried burning on this thing was a coaster. That was with ROM version 37. I upgraded it to ROM version 39 and it wasn't much better. Could only get it to write TDK DVD-Rs & Memorex DVD-RWs reliably. Would not even recognize DVD+RW disks from TDK or Memorex. I spent several days trying to get this thing to work reliably, but I'm giving up and taking it back. Support wasn't much help, responded quickly to emails but not very knowledgeable. Was a good deal for the price and features but it was not worth the headaches for me. Make sure you test it out good before sending in any rebates, otherwise you're SOL because OM won't take it back if you already ripped out the UPC.
