I use this drive under RH9.0 Linux on a Dell i360n P4 workstation. Works like a dream. Very dependable. I use dvdrecord and mkisofs to create and burn data DVDs. I have bit image copied a SUSE 9.0 DVD using dd and dvdrecord which worked perfectly. Highly recommended for Linux users. Since it is firewire it is treated as a SCSI device via the firewire interface. Comments posted by Dow Hurst from Other, December 01, 2003. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

I live in Europe so I had to shell out the equivalent of $460 for this puppy, but it's still worth it. I have a Toshiba RD-XS30 set top recorder (which Europeans also have to pay 50% more for). This machine when used in conjunction with TMPGEnc DVD gives you all you need to create brilliant DVD-R compilations. For example, record the Super Bowl. A four hour ordeal right? No worries Insert the DVD-Ram disc in the Lacie and fire up TMPGEnc DVD. The file format for real time recordings is *.VRO NOT *.VOB. This software reads the VRO directly, allows you to edit out the commercials down to the exact frame, convert to familiar VOB format and the Lacie will burn a perfect edited copy on just about any brand DVD-R and I mean perfect. Regretably, TMPGEnc DVD is not packaged with this unit, which is a crime, I mean, why else are you buying a DVD-RAM burner? The DVD-RAM driver pack with his unit does however allows you to quick format a new DVD-RAM in seconds. My Toshiba Set Top, nice as it is, requires a 70 minutes physical format without the option of a quick format so that's a nice little feature. My industry pet peeve-why distribute unformatted DVD-RAM discs? A nice machine all around though, a fire wire interface makes life a snap and I have seen pictures of units with a both Firewire and USB interfaces but let me guess, you have to pay extra. The other included software is WinDVD 4 which is OK and Sonic MyDVD and ArcSoft, two useless pieces of software from the *.VRO point of view. I have had difficulty erasing DVD-RW's and having the unit recognize that the dic had be erased however. Very strange and a bit disappointing. It could be software related but Ripper or driver? I used NERO to erase a -RW but NERO balked just using quick erase. I wasted another 50 minutes of my life doing a NERO complete format and the same fault. Moved the disc to another computer with an IOMEGA internal multidrive and altough NERO reported that the disc was full I had no trouble writing over it with the IOMEGA and NERO. Otherwise a splendid machine. Comments posted by Bart Simpson from Other, October 13, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |
