| had not much problems with reading/writing. only today it can't burn some philips dvd+rw 4x disks (code PHILIPS.041). will return them back to shop. this is indeed Lite-On SHW-1635S and I easily updated firmware to YS0Z (http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html) and then disabled region check (with LtnRPC.zip) Comments posted by Beluck from Ukraine, January 23, 2008. | purchased in 2/06. writes everything i've thrown at it, from bad memorex media to sony and verbatims without a hitch. no problem with cd media, either. | I have bought a new pc with this drive. It burns ok, no coasters at all. However most of the discs I burn don't play in my Philips DVP520 player. I can't use Verbatim dvd-r 16x, Traxdata dvd-r 8x, and Platinum dvd+r 2,4x DL dvd's In my old Pioneer 107 all those discs did play in my Philips player. The only discs that are burned ok AND play are Verbatim DVD+r 16x. So this is very disappointing. I'll replace it for a better drive for sure (probably a BenQ dw1655). | Bought it in January 2006 when I finally got a new PC. Bought it from CompUSA as my "sole" drive, boot drive, CD drive, burner, and all. Was... mostly satisfied with it. Seems to be compatible with almost anything. Bought mainly Office Depot/Staples media (turns out to be FUJIFILM03 MIDs) and had no problem with 8X or 16X speed burns. Also happy with CD-Rs, used Office Depot, Maxell, and HP media. Until one day in September 2006 when it refused to load any CD's. CD is loaded into tray and retracted. The spindle tries to spin up, but some "cracking/scratching" sound was heard right at max RPM, then spindle slows back down. It retries about 5 times before it quits for good, and no disc was sensed at all. Even the Microsoft XP CD refused to load, not just CD-R blanks. Strangely, DVD's continue to work fine (even burning DVD's) AOpen has no firmware upgrade or any troubleshooting info on the net, other than very generic instructions. There seems to be indications that this is built by Lite-On, but there is no newer firmware available, so I think I'm sunk. It did came with 3 different face plates, plus OEM Nero and OEM PowerDVD, but other than that stuff's pretty bare. Comments posted by KC from United States, September 29, 2006. | This drive has been wonderful for me so far. I've had it about 6 months without problems. I havent found any media it cant read/write. | DO NOT BUY THIS BURNER! The only reason I gave this a rating greater than 1 is because I have been able to successfully use it with one media. However, I purchased a 25-pack of DVD-RW imation 1x discs and wasn't able to burn them using the AOpen writer. I contacted Imation thinking it was a disc problem and they wanted me to send some in. So instead of that, I tried it on a friend's Imac computer and it burned just fine. AOpen has HORRIBLE technical support. It is only online and their it is crap (I kept trying to post comments and they would get lost and I would have to resubmit them). Their only suggestion was to try some different DVD-RW discs and see if they work. Well, I'm not about to go out and spend $20 on more discs (since you can't just purchase 1 disc anywhere!) and have them MAYBE work!! Anyway, this is a total waste of money unless you want to only use discs people have said work (such as HP DVD-R 8x 4.7 GB). Comments posted by Andrew from United States, May 14, 2006. | Had this burner a couple weeks now. I have not had any problems burning disk at all. I am using NeroExpress. I have only tried Sony DVD-R media so far. The only problem I have had (pretty common issue) is that some media burned by other people with different types of burners doesn't read.
