Maybe I'm a fool, cause I have one TEAC DV-W50D since Sept03, compiled about 200 DVD-Rs with a 95% success, but one day I came across Flashman's Firmware hack to "True PIONEER DVR-106D". To be honest that did do the job, as described in the walkthrough. I even upgraded to 108 firmware w/o a glitch. One word of caution though: I hadn't used it with at least 5 Region 2 Movie DVDs, when it had the TEAK F/W, so the region would be locked to R2. By doing the hack ,the RPC2, memory region ,wich was still open to modification, got "stuck" to 2 tries, without taking into consideration all further Disk region changes! You may think: ...Hey, thats great!!!, a region-free player! Well that's not quiet true ,since the darn thing crashes, giving me MMC errors, BSODs, Instant Reboots etc., 5/10 times I insert a copywrited DVD. I use since an old MATSHITA 32x player for movies,(Jeesh!!) Bottom line? The TEAC DV-W50D was already a perfect Tool, to begin with! It's user is an idiot user after all! Wasn't satisfied with this one actually. Had bad results using Nero 6 and some -R media. Switched to Plextor eventually... Comments posted by korisnik from Croatia, February 20, 2004. Rated this writer 7 of 10. |

I've decided to buy it because I couldn't find a pioneer and I discovered that it is the same.. Really a good product.. I can burn very cheap media without problems, I compared it with the liteon LDW411s, it is more compatible with media and with standalone players.. on the other side it is slow on reading dvd.. Ripped Blow with with teac 30 minutes, liteon 18 minutes, with the same pc, same program. Comments posted by tipix from Other, January 06, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

I do not use it for long enough to rate it, but it works perfectly for me. I burned only one 4x Princo DVD-R but many -RW and +RW disks work OK (Princo and Pioneer 1x -RW, Verbatim, EMTEC and Philips 2.4x +RW) New firmware is available: http://www.teac.co.jp/dspd/download/firmware/dv-w50d/explain.html I didn't try it because it reads and writes anything I put into it... It is picky when writing cd-r's.My allstar cheapos produced power calibration errors while sony's didn't... It is a great dvdr burner. Comments posted by VaderGr from Other, September 18, 2003. I've had this burner for almost 2 weeks now and it's works perfectly. Before I bought it, I called TEAC tech support and they emailed me the manual and a list of compatible media. I was also given the link to where I could d/l the latest firmware for it if it still had the 1.10 firmware. When I got the burner, it already had the latest 1.30 firmware. So no need to update the firmware. I have been using generic 4x dvd-r media from mwave.com (not on the compatibility list) and they burn at 4x using copytoDVD, clonedvd amd recordnow. Takes less than 20minutes to burn a full disk. Not a single coaster so far and I've already burnt approximately 15 movies. I was told that this is the same burner as the pioneer 105 burner. No wonder it's so good. Comments posted by aglips from Other, August 16, 2003. Rated this writer No rating. |

Technically the same as the Pioneer 106. But the firmware is crap. Seems to accept DVD-Media (DVD-R, DVD+R), but produces coasters. Every Verbatim-Media I tried on it (reported to be working fine on the Pioneer 106) was a coaster, no matter, which burn-program I used. The only media that works for me were PrimeOn DVD-R 1-2x, the Teac burned them only with single speed and PrimeOn DVD+RW 2,4x working at the given speed. So I had 5 coasters out of 11. Even worse than that is, that Teac has not yet published a list of compatible media for this recorder, the only one you will find on the homepage is the one for the Teac W50E. I strongly suggest to anyone who thinks about purchasing this recorder to take the Pioneer 106 instead of this one. Comments posted by Lazlo from Other, August 14, 2003. Rated this writer 1 of 10. |

OEM version only £130 Sterling actually writes cd's at 24X, reads at up to 67X cd. At 15 mins to complete a full -R this is a great buy. No incompatibility problems yet using a variety of datasafe blanks at 4X speed (burning DVvideo and many converted mpegs, backup and data in various formats . A good solid buy only detraction is for region locking via firmware on the fifth change watch out for that especially if you didn't get the manual.
