After replacing the power supply of the computer (because the original one is dead), the burning of double-layer discs succeed. (Previously, the process always failed with "Write Error" returned during the beginning of burning the 2nd layer of the discs.) This indicates that the drive requires a larger power to perform the burning of double-layer media (at least 350W for 220V power supply in Hong Kong). Also, more physical memory (1GB or above) is recommended. Comments posted by Kwan Chi Nam from Hong Kong, January 06, 2008. Rated this writer 7 of 10. |

Bought this as a replacement to my SHW-1633 which was a very good drive. It finally died after playing and copying an average of 2 to 4 DVD's a week for a year and a half! So far my experience with the 1635S drive is very positive, it is pretty fast when coupled with 'One Click DVD', which will happily compress dual layer DVD's to fit single layer. What's even better about this brand is the fact that you can de-regionalise the drive with their handy little 'ltnRPC.exe' which is easily found on the web. This drive cost around 59 Euros which I reckon represents excellent value. It even comes with a choice of white or black facia's in the box. Not many other manufacturers do this. I've had no issues with either of these drives other than, like so many others, they don't like cheap 'no name' media. With the ability to burn at pretty high speed, it makes sense to use higher quality disks. All in all, a superb drive. Comments posted by JMac from Germany, November 12, 2006. as an update to my previous post: after using this drive for 3 months I had to switch back to my NEC that was in my daughters computer. I found this drive to be VERY poor at ripping. If the disc was not in perfect condition, there would be errors such as skipping or the audio would have quiet but noticable popping sounds. Comments posted by cowgoo from Canada, April 26, 2006. This DVD-Writer supports many different brands of CD-R/Ws and DVD+/-R/Ws. It can recognize mose of the discs (except some DVD-R for Authoring discs, which will produce clicking noises when trying to recognize them) and writes to these discs without errors. The written discs are mostly free of bad sectors. The only exception is the double-layer DVD+/-Rs. Although it can recognize these discs, it seems failing to write the 2nd layer of such discs. The "Write error" is always returned, when using Nero Express 6.6.0.13 (bundled with the DVD-Writer) and different brands of double-layer discs. Despite of the writing problem of double-layer discs, it is of good quality even though it is made in China. Comments posted by Kwan Chi Nam from Hong Kong, March 04, 2006. I bought this to replace my Sony DRU510a and an MSI MS-8404A after they both decided not to make a firmware update to support the new dyes. This Lite on works really well when ripping a dvd, as the speed goes over 10'000kbs. It burns at 8x with no verification errors over many different discs. I tested the buffer underun and it passed without any glitches. They also seem to be quick at releasing new firmware updates to support all the new media. It's nice to have a burner that works, as on the others; I just kept getting 'power calibration error' on many different media. And yes, I did try cleaning the lens. VERY loud compared to my other burner, a NEC 2510a. But it does seem to do a good job reading and writing Comments posted by cowgoo from Canada, January 25, 2006. Rated this writer 6 of 10. |
