| I got this burner a few months ago, and with the exception of the shoddy software it comes with, and the slow burning sppeds i get in Nero (2x), I can't complain too much. It burns anything you throw at it. There's a firmware update buried on Iomega's site for it too, although after running it, I noticed no differences. | Follow-up on my previous comments ... I burned 45+ more Ritek G04's and didn't have any more coasters. I'm willing to chalk up my previous Ritek G04 coasters to a bad batch. (The newer Riteks I burned have the silver matte top with "RIDATA" on the hub, the previous ones had the high-gloss silver top without any branding at all). I still feel that this drive is a bit more sensitive to less-than-perfect media than some other drives. But the unit is attractively priced and has the DVD-RAM feature. Perhaps Iomega will introduce another firmware upgrade that will help, and improve the awful Hotburn software (use Nero!). Comments posted by Bill from United States, January 18, 2004. | i just got this drive off of tiger, and it seems to be pretty good i had an iomagic 4d and it ran just fine untill the 5-10 minutes of a dvd it didn't what kind it would start pausing, well with the iomega i have to burn a coaster and i am very please and by the way i was using khpermedia. dvd+r on the iomagic. | Just got this drive becase I got a Panasonic desktop writer which supports only RAM. It works great for this kind of money. Burning is smooth in Nero, DVD X copy, MyDVD. I have never tried the hotburn. It would be nice if it can take RAM with caddy just like the desktop that I have for disk protection. Comments posted by jervis from Other, January 09, 2004. | To Keith I have Fujifilm DVD+RW (RicohJPN W01) and Verbatim DVD+RW(The one come with the driver). They both work. To Bill I have Ritek 4x too and burned around 15 disc with no coasters. | While I have the external version of this drive, I think that mechanically the basic drive is the same. I've also noticed some of the same issues mentioned here. | Thanks for Fox's advice! I have tried burning DVD+R using Hotburn (at 4x speed) and was successful. I think the major problem of Hotburn is that it only works with DVD+R (not DVD-R) but only specify this limitation in their support page. http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/11741.html However, I still cannot find a single brand DVD+RW that can work with the 'Super Drive'. | I have no problem with 4X dvd so far.(tryed TDK +R made by RICOH & PC Club -R disc made by RITEK) I heard some 4X DVD doesn't really write at 4X speed? Also early version of nero 6 had a lot of problem. upgrade the software. To Keith I think you got a bad DVD writer. I have tried the HOT burn without problem. Can you exchange another one. | Recieved this as an early Christmas present. Did a bunch of research on which one to buy. After comparing price and flexability I bought the Iomega Super DVD Writer. Bought it from iomega's web site for $125.00 after rebates. I have never installed the software it comes with, I use Nero 6 now. Made a data disk with a dvd+wr disk and some movies on dvd-r. Everything seems to be ok with these burns. The only thing I don't understand is that Nero will burn the dvd-r disks at 2x when the media and recorder is rated at 4x. | Some additional information over my previous comments: After several unsuccessful try using the Hotburn, I determined to try other software. Firstly I format a DVD-RAM using WinXP FAT32 directly. It was successful, and I can write / read over 3 GB data. Then I tried myDVD and burn some mpeg video to a DVD+R and also a DVD-R. No coasters! I also took the previously corrupted DVD+RW to a friend and tried on his (Sony) burner. He could burn both disks without problem. He put some files on the disks (also gave me another branded DVD+RW for testing) and I took them back to the Super drive. Guest what? I can read the files on all the disks, but unable to write / erase /format any one of them using Hotburn. It seems that the Super Drive has major problem using Hotburn. However, I have tried another data burning software from Veritas but it could not recognize the Super Drive. I am not sure if Nero can support this new drive or not. But I still cannot burn a single 'data DVD' for archiving my JPG photoes. (I have marked up the rating a bit on this post so that the overall average rating from my 3 posts would be at about 5). | Some follow-on with my previous comments : After the unsuccessful buring with DVD+RW, I then tried burning a DVD-R disk using Hotburn (with about 3.2 GB data). The process completed successfully. However, when I review the DVD-R disk (using the Super DVD drive), only a small portion of files could be found. The disk 'property' showed that the disk has 3.2 GB of data (on an UDF file system), but under the Windows (XP) Explorer, the files shown only add up to about 22 MB. Other files just disappeared! I then read the same disk on another machine with DVD/CDRW combo drive. In this case, NO FILES can be read and the drive simply cannot recognize the disk! I tried burning another DVD-R disk using the 'ISO image' method again and the same thing happened (exactly the same : the same files found on the burned disk and other files disappeared). | Originally I have much expectation on this drive. I have been using an Iomega external CD-RW drive for some time and thus I think it would be safe to upgrade with the same vendor. What disappointed me is that the drive cannot work with its bundled DVD+RW. Formatting a disk with the Hotburn software took about 70 minutes, afterwards the verifying process did not end (after 6 hours!) There was no way to terminate the Hotburn, except by the Ctrl-Alt-Del (task manager of XP). I tried again by buying another DVD+RW disk (dearest one), hoping that it was only the media problem. However, I was disappointed again after over 90 minutes (verifying ...). Did I stop here? No, I update the firmware, upgrade the Hotburn with latest patches, stop the anti-virus softare ... | Oh man, I love this DVD writer! It does all formats...you know DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW (not a disappointment like my hp writer dvd300i...only does like 2 formats, or some skimpy crap). Very reliable, no coasters yet and I'm throwing the cheapest discs at it. Straight up, Iomega is back! And the price is great! I love it! I bought it after getting home with my hp writer and all these discs I bought and then discovered I couldn't use (DVD-R). Now, I'm using all those discs...what can I say? I'm very pleased!
