| Bought this drive a few days ago at Futureshop with the $100 rebate deal. So far I've backed up 4 DVD-R movies and 2 PS2 games on Legacy 4X (Princo) DVD-Rs and they work perfectly. The drive is quick and quiet and I could not get the buffer to budge, even when starting Office XP and using the net. DVD-RWs also read and write well. I have yet to test DVD+R(W) and DVD-RAM media. | I haven't tested my writer much. I wrote two 1xDVD-Rs at 2x speed and they were perfect. After I switched the firmware to A300 (which is supposed to improve DVD-R writing at 4x) I tried to write another DVD-R at 2x with 7 movies on it, but 2 of them were unreadable. | Took a chance on LG...a company I never bought anything from...just because the drive seems to do it all. DVD-RAM may not be a necessity, but since I have the Panny RP91 which reads DVD-RAM, why not get a drive that can work it. Work it, it can, and it works well (very fast at 3X). It's also great for archiving... So far, I burned 15 DVD-R's (rated 1x, at 2X speed) with Nero. No problems. Quiet...even the draw opens quietly (compared to my Lite-On CDRW). Haven't upgraded to the new firmware yet...but don't see a reason to do so...yet. Agree that the software bundle isn't the greatest...but what do you expect for the price? The drive can be had for less than $190. Just do a pricegrabber check...it's cheaper everytime I looked. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a burner that does it all...esp. DVD-RAM. | cnet.com now has a full review of the LG GSA-4040B. http://reviews.cnet.com/4505-3212_7-30468920.html?tag=cnetfd.sd The editor's gave it a solid 7.8 "Good" rating. They highlight that the support DVD-RAM and all other formats as a huge plus for the drive and although speed tests were mixed the overall performance was solid. Price was another plus for the drive, as I have also mentioned in my blog. The biggest drawback that I see with this drive is the software bundle. | I bought my GSA-4040B in USA and upgraded to firmware A300 from the site mentioned bellow. The driver is working OK but I still can't record good PRINCO DVD-Rs. The driver won't complain but my Sony DAS-300 and Phillips DVD 615 DVD players have problem playing after about 3GB. I also have problems with generic DVD+RWs. DVD-RAM is very good and very fast (support superior 3x (with file handling is comparable with DVD-+RW 6x!)) | Nero Infotool 2.00 recognises LG 4040 as an DVD RAM Recorder,however inserted DVD RAM is not recognised (no disc inserted). Works however well with a DVD ROM etc.... Nero DVD Speed 0.53 also recognises DVD RAM and one can make read and writespeed measurements. However Nero 6.0 does not permit DVD RAM writing because it does not recognise inserted DVD RAMs. Normal file transfer to a DVD RAM disk however works well. The included DVD RAM disk (Maxell) seems to be a new type. | I'm having an issue with Nero where it's not shutting down properly. Here's the email I just wrote to their tech support: have the retail version of Nero 5.5. I'm running version 5.5.10.42 and I'm using Windows XP SP1. I just switched a new LG Electronics GSA-4040B DVD burner for an old Sony 8x CD-ROM drive. Now when I close Nero, the GUI disappears but the program is still running (when looking at the list from Task Manager.) If I select nero.exe and hit the "End Task" button, nero.exe does not exit, nor does any sort of error message dialog disappear. Also this running version of Nero prevents me from shutting down Windows XP properly. When I tell Windows to shut down, it doesn't. I have to cycle the power switch on the computer. I did a full reinstall of Nero 5.5.10.42 and I still have this problem. This behavior began at the exact same time as when I installed my new DVD burner. If I don't start Nero, my computer has no difficulty in shutting down. I'm able to burn discs with the new burner using Nero without any problems. Any ideas for how to resolve this issue? | Well I got mine from Mwave and the first generic DVD-RW I wrote screwed up but luckily I could re-write. It was my fault because I wrote too much data and went beyond the capacity and it screwed up. I guess there is no overburning with DVD. :) Now the strange part is the disc I wrote was a data disc with pictures that my dad took. If I stick it in the burner again it won't read it, but it will read in any DVD rom including first generation drives perfectly... Any ideas as to why it won't read in the burner?
