| My feedback on this burner. Excellent except it is media sensitive. For people, who could not get it to burn DVD-R at 4X, it is definately media related. I only managed to get 2 brands to burn at that speed. TDK, Verbatim - I am told Maxell and LG work as well. (should do as both have same parent company - ie. the burner is actually a Hitachi-LG Data Storage product, and Hitachi also own Maxell) Funny enuff, cheap DVD+R burn OK at 4X. | I wrote a comment some days ago about my new LG 4040b dvd writer, I said I had some troubles writing CD (not dvd). I went to futureshop to have a new one, thinking my first one had trouble, and the new one have the same trouble. A friend bought the same model and he also have the same trouble. Conclusion, if you buy this piece of hardware to burn DVD, everything is fine, but DO NOT SELL your old cd burner, because the 4040B is a piece of scrap to burn normal 700MB CD. I tried Verbatim, Kodak and others, and it simply doesn't work fine. It seems to write correctly, but the only device that will be able to read your burned cd correctly is the 4040b, if you put your cd-r somewhere else (audio or data cd reader, dreamcast, ...) it will have a lot of trouble reading it. | I have had this drive for about a month now and it works great. I bought this because this forum had excellent reviews for it and it performed accordingly. One coaster so far and it was my mistake. I have used Memorex DVD+R 4x so far and works great with Nero 6.0. It recognizes the media at 4x but burns at 2x after you hit Burn At 4X. Dunno why. Overall great drive. | I bought it five days ago and burned only one dvd-ram disk (i had no time becouse i'm working nearly 14 h/day) and about 60 cdr's. Currently the drive is not able to read ANY disk!! | I have had the LG 4040B now for a few weeks. I bought it from Future Shop for $200 after mail in rebate. I have tried all of the formats and have had only 1 coaster, a DVD+R @ 4X. This was at the old firmware which it came with, but since upgrading to the A300 FW it's been rock solid @ 4X. Media used so far is Memorex DVD+R/RW (4X/2.4X), and Ritek DVD-R/RW (4X/2X). Everything plays in my Panasonic RP82. Alot of people put the LGs down on the internet opting for the Pioneer models, which I almost bought. I do not regret buying the LG model. | I bought this drive from canadacomputers.com in Toronto for $279.00 CDN incl. tax... drive works great, within minutes, I had it installed and was backing up my movies... using Verbatim discs (cause that's what my Staples/Business Depot sells) I successfully recorded movies which work in all my DVD Players (Sony, Pioneer) on to DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW (all verbatim discs)... The DVDRAM memorex disc that came in the box is a bonus, works just like a harddrive and more reliable that a packet-written CD-RW... | I recently bought the 4040b at FutureShop. I had no problem writing dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd+rw (+-r TDK rw Verbatim) and they can easily be read on my electrohome dvd. But, I have a lot of trouble writing standards CDR, nero give me some strange errors, like "hardware not able to do this function", or the burned cdr are unreadable on other systems... maybe I have a defective one, or the LG4040 is very good for DVD and very bad for CDR... I upgraded the firmware and burned DATA and DVD-VIDEO using VERBATIM and TDK Media with no problems. using NERO and DVD DECRYPTER . I didn't even bothered using the programs that came with the burner , that's why I gave the burner 9/10 . LG Should give something better then the crappy software that they are giving now. | This is a great drive. The first thing I did was flash to the latest firmware revision (A300). I have since burned over 30 +R discs, all burned at 4x, and haven't had a bad burn yet. This was using Memorex and Maxell 4x +R and Nero 6. I have also tried the RAM disc as well as some cdr and they work beautifully as well. I have not tried any -R as I haven't found anyone selling a single package with 4x media. I don't want to buy a spindle of the stuff just to try it out...I already stock piled lots of +R. :) As well, I haven't tried RW of any kind as I don't really have any use for it. I put it in my computer (2 minutes and 35 seconds 'pitstop') I opened Studio 8, selected the first 10 minutes of a studio project I was preparing with menu, transitions,... and export the project in DVD format with burning. | After looking around and finaly deciding this was the drive for me i bought it at dabs.com for £128. Got it installed (easiest drive I had to install so far) I Then installed Nero 6 as I didnt fancy the software supplied not that there is anything wrong with it, I just like Nero.... I Burned a DVD within 15 mins and it worked perfectly. I burned more to make sure and even copied one on the fly using my other DVD reader, and it also was perfect. If anyone has problems with this drive they should read some of the guides first before burning as the only way you can go wrong is through stupidity.... If you could I would give it 11 out of 10. | Two drives within eight days have been returned to the retailer, and after three days LG Electronics has failed to respond to request for assistance with quality, compatibility and readability issues. 1. First drive failed after writing first DVD-R at 2X. Would not even read the disc it just wrote in order to verify the disc it had just created. In fact, from this point forward it would not read ANY disc of ANY format whatsoever (DVD-R blank, DVD-R written, DVD-ROM, CD, CD-R blank or written, or CD-RW blank or written.) Assume the laser got stuck, misaligned, but back to the store it went. Further, the media sold to me (Taiwan manufacture, called Pearl, distributed by e3works international) told the machine is was 2X max capability. This movie did play on my standalone Pioneer 434 DVD player. 2. Second unit (exchanged cheerfully by the retailer) had same 2X limitation on a second spindle of the same media. Distributor has also failed to respond to request for compatibilty with drives. After two days, still no acknowledgement from them. Made three more DVDs, but this time they all verified after write. Two of the three failed during playback, on the same drive that wrote the disc, as well as two other PCs. In fact, one failed to read right at the start, and the other one failed at about 25 - 30 minutes into the movie. They both did play on the standalone DVD, however. 3. Purchased two other brands of 4X DVD-R media. Both said they were limited to 2X recording on this drive. What's the point of paying for 4X capability if the media won't cooperate? 4. Re-wrote the same movie that wouldn't even start on the PC, with same effect, using the other media brand. Wrote a different movie, also with the second brand, and on the PC, it choked on reading (PowerDVD) at about 25 minutes -- also on the same drive that had just written it. (It had verified the file write OK). Looks to me like an alignment problem. While a data glitch in a movie, that perhaps a DVD player can gloss over, is one thing, and an unreadable data disc is quite another. I'd venture to say that "unreliable" is just about the biggest kiss of death for a storage device. Anyone remember the SPARQ 1 MB cartridge drive that put Syquest out of business? 5. After hours of searching for ratings, reviews and ways to handle these problems, notwithstanding the hours of crawling under and around desks four times to install and remove the devices, I am totally discouraged with LG and its defective product. 6. I did find reference to a BIOS upgrade from the A04 (mine was stamped July 2003 as date of manufacture) to a "300" version. When I got a link to this, then read the company disclaimer, I howled with scorn: You must have it installed as the master device on the secondary bus, with nothing else on the bus before proceeding. Another trip under the desk to remove my CD-RW. But the show-stopper was the company's insistence that they take no responsibility for what happens if you attempt this upgrade. My take on this is: The company, knowingly or otherwise, releases a defective product, incapable of meeting its own 4X specs, with an unsatisfactory BIOS, then insists their customers risk trashing the two-day old purchase with an upgrade. And LG Electronics disclaims liability for any damage that may cause. Can you spell: P - R - E - P - O - S - T - E - R - O - U - S ? And of course, they gain further insulation from their own deficiencies by ignoring the messages sent to them, asking why the drive fails to live up to advertised expectations. Lest anyone think I "have it in" for this company, I am the proud and satisfied purchaser of not one, but three, LG combination DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives. In fact, my satisfaction with this equipment was the main reason I chose this brand in the first place. Rebate or not, I wash my hands of this product. | I bought this 1 also at FS 5 days ago. I have some problems with the DVD+RW Verbatim DataLifeplus. It cannot read with these discs when using Nero to format. DVD-R and -Rw is O.K. with 2x It happens again when I'm trying to use the CD-RW to backup data. Sometimes it cannot read the data on the discs although my last LG CD writer can read that easily and faster. You see that my last LG CD writer is only 12x, and this one with remarquable 16x but I'm sure that you find problems to read or write on the Verbatim's And now it cannot fix this when updating the new bios from A104 to A300. | I also picked up this burner from Future Shop ($CDN299 less $CDN100 rebate)yesterday. I haven't tried much with it yet, but I have backed up 4GB to the included DVD-RAM without a hitch. I also created a DVD from a short XVid movie I made onto a 1x Maxell DVD-RW with the included software. Worked great. | I just bought this couple days ago from FS. tried creating 3 data DVD+Rs, and they are all phucked. Tired DVD(ISO), DVD(UDF) formats.. None of em are recognized in any DVD-ROM players including the DVD burner itself. Only ISOBUSTER along with the DVD-burner is able to read the contents of these DVDs.
