My first DVD player/writer
Cost 125 with shipping for the 4040BI (bulk box)
Did not come with DVDram driver, I got that from the forums here.
The retail version provides them, LG website does not have them.

Installed in Windows 2000 without problems, burned one full disk at 2x, and havent seen the 4x option yet, with 301 firmware.
I havent been able to format a DVDram disk, but have only tried one.

Had no problem reading DVD, and playing them.

Giving it an 8 for lack of support from LG.

I've had the LG for a couple of weeks. I have burned several DVD-R (eProformance 2x from 7dayshop.com £9.99 for 10 on spindle) and several DVD-RW (Traxdata 2x from 7dayshop.com £9.99 for 5 in jewel cases).

I have had no problems yet, I use DVDShrink 3.0 beta to backup DVD to disc (using re-author option) and Nero 6.0.0.19 to burn the disc.

I have not tried any 4x media yet and am still running on the original firmware.

I am amazed how quiet the drive is, I also have an LG CD-RW which is much louder.

I gave two lg4040 back to the shop because I produced with using Nero 5.5 6 coasters also Verbatim 4x !!
I bought a 3rd one because of a tip from a DVD-Forum. Don`t use Nero5.5 with this burner. I upgraded to Nero 6.0.0.19 and everything works perfectly. the only bad thing is that DVD-RAM only burns at 1x not at 3x.
Perhaps a new firmware will solve this.

If you don`t use Nero5.5 the writer is really excellent.

A completely honest, no BS review!!

Purchase date: October 18, 2003

When I first got this burner, I was skeptic about the mixed reviews people gave for this device, but after a week of testing and troubleshooting this burner, I've decided to list all problems I had and solutions I came up with to make this drive operate according to
specs.

Before testing anything I upgraded firmware to A301. A posting somewhere below has link to LG site for upgrade.

My first test was to rip and burn a dvd movie. Used lead-data dvd-r 4x as media, shrink dvd to rip and nero 6.0 ultra to burn. For some reason the burn speed was 2x only so I used dvdinfo (free tool) to check media information and it turns out it is a 2x being sold as a 4x (accidentally I assume). The burn Was a compelte success (about 30 - 45 minutes). PowerDVD had problems scanning forward the chapters but winDVD, and MSIDVD had no problems at all. It also worked flawlessly on my sony dvd player.

Next, I tried using different media (Ritek dvd+r 2.4x) to burn same movie.
Nero burned it fine (30 - 45 mins) but windows xp was not able to read the media. It shows 0 btyes of 0 bytes in detail pane. Tried reading the media with DVDdecryptor, dvdshrink, media player 8.0, powerDVD and none of these software was able to read the movie from the dvd. I knew this couldn't be a coaster since the burning process was a success. So as a last resort, I tried ISOBuster (free and very useful tool) and it was able to read and display the data on the dvd. Knowing that the data was there I then tried another player (winDVD) to open the movie and voila! a success! Also works flawlessly on my sony dvd player.

Highly recommend winDVD for playback of DVDs.

Next I tried a rewritable (verbatim dvd+rw 2.4x). Nero was unable to write to this media and unable to erase it. I used dvdinfo (free tool) to check the media info and it appeared to be ok. Used this tool to erase the media and it was a success. Unsure of what's wrong, I decided to use the 'crap software' bundled with the burner (BHA's B's recorder). B's recorder had no problems burning to this media. However, it literally took over 3 hours to burn 4 GB of data to the media. I figure that can't be right, so I checked the DMA setting for the drive:

- went to: system properties -> hardware -> device manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Secondary IDE Channel -> advance settings

It appears that the current transfer mode was PIO. No wonder the burn process was so slow.
I changed transfer mode to DMA if available and restarted my computer but it was still in PIO mode. I decided to check my BIOS (esc or F1 at start-up) and found that this drive was not detected. My only option was to flash my BIOS and after doing that this drive was then recognized and DMA settings were, by default, set to DMA-2.
(Note: after flashing BIOS and windows shows blue stop screen, completely shut down your computer (do not restart) and turn it on again.)
Only problem now is getting nero to burn dvd+rw since B's recorder is crap. Decided to go to their site and update software. After update, nero is now able to erase and burn to this media! ( about 30 - 45 minutes to burn 4 GB of data on to verbatim dvd+rw 2.4x)

Thirdly, I tried dvd-ram. Nothing was needed to be installed for windows xp to detect this media. Used it just like an extra partition. Copied 4 GB of data to it and it took about 20 - 30 minutes. Not bad at all.
(Note: this drive is only compatible with non-cartridge type dvd-rams)

Finally I tried burning cd-r's and cd-rw's. Used generic no name brand cd-r's to burn music cd with nero and encountered no problems whatsoever. It burned at the rated 24x. ( about 5 minutes)
Used liteon and maxell cd-rw to burn data and vcd. Again no problems. Burned at rated 16x. (about 5 mintues)

Conslusions:

If problems should arise, you should NEVER jump to conclusions and assume this and that or that the burner you got is crap. If burn process is a success, then you should not have a coaster! Sometimes certain media can not be read on certain dvd drives or by certain software but this does not mean either one is defective. It's just an incompatibility problem. I recommend using rewritables for testing first. If you have similar problems as I have had and tried the solutions I've tried, then I can assure you (hell, I can gaurantee you!) that your problems would be solved as long as the burner is not defective.
I haven't tried any other burning tools besides nero and BHA's since it wasn't necessary.
I agree the software bundle is crap but most likely you have your own software already.
If you don't, I recommend nero for burning (just make sure you update it), winDVD for playback, dvdshrink (free tool) for decrypting and ripping, dvdinfo (free tool) for obtaining media info and ISObuster (free tool) for data recovery. They may have OEM versions of nero and winDVD software for under $10. If you can't even afford that, then use a p2p program like kazaa or morpheus and download the cracked versions. Just watch out for viruses!

I guess the bottom line to solving incompatibility issues is to update, update, update!
Make sure you have latest firmware, software revisions, aspi drivers, and BIOS revision (if necessary).

One problem I still have is windows xp being unable to read my ritek dvd+r (maybe I had to format it before burning it?). Anyway, as long as I can play the movie using windvd and rip/recover the data using ISObuster, I can overlook the problem for now.

All in all I'd say this is a great burner at an incredible price!
If you're in Toronto, canadacomputers (www.canadacomputers.com) is selling this burner for $185 retail. You also get a free movie if one is available. (Last I checked all they had left was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) Made a great gift for my nephew!

Scoring system:

Performance 8.0 / 10 (Not the fastest but definitely above average. Fast ripping and also very quiet when burning)
Features 9.0 / 10 (supports all formats! Except cartridge type dvd-ram. No headphone jack; but really, who the hell ever uses it?)
Software & package 6.0 / 10 (Software is garbage! Only comes with 1 dvd-ram.)
Setup & installation 9.0 / 10 (a breeze!)
Help & Support 6.0 / 10 (Took me a long while to figure out that enabling dma required flashing of the BIOS.)
+5 extra points for the incredibly affordable price!

Overall score: 8.6 / 10

Hey guys, looks like I made a good choice buying the LG 4040B. Just came across this article that rates the LG 4040 higher than Sony and Pioneer. This article tests 11 dvd burners and recommends the LG 4040!!!!

Andrew, are you using Firmware A301??

It could be the media and/or Nero 6 ultra. Have you tried other media? Go and get some cheapo Princo DVDs and see it that helps...or try using something other than Nero which has a problem right now with their version 6.

From my burn times, I'm defintely burning at 4X.

Just bought this drive 2 weeks ago. Can't seem to burn at 4x. I am using Memorex with 4x stated on disk. I haven't tried any other media yet but will definately make an attempt to see if it is media related.
I have also upgraded to the latest firmware. This is the odd thing and I think it has to do with the DVD-RAM part. When I try to use Nero 6 Ultra the burn speed is automatically set to 3.1x without and media in the drive. When I put in my 4x Memorex disk it changes to 2x and I can't select any other speed. I would really appreciate any help anybody can give me. P.S I am running Windows XP on an Intel 2.4GHZ CPU with 1GB of memory.

Thanks

I researched several dvd burners including Plextor 708A 8x, Pioneer A06, Sony 510A, DWU14A, and LG 4040. It seemed that no drive was perfect. Everywhere I looked, somebody had something bad to say about each drive. Either there was some incompatibility with some media or they were burning coasters with certain software and media combos etc. However, after talking with several experienced people, and reading reviews online, I bought the LG 4040 because it seemed like the best price/performance value out there. I bought the OEM version for $174.99cdn at a local computer store here in Toronto, Canada. Many people bitched about the crappy software that game bundled with this drive but that wasn't an issue with me as I wasn't going to use it anyways. What was most important was a solid reliable performing drive. AND knock on wood, everything has been awesome!

First thing I did was upgrade to ver A301 firmware. It was painless and only took one click and one minute. Now it was time for some burning fun!!

Next, I burned a complete DVD movie from beginning to end in 24 minutes on cheapo princo dvd-r 4x media using DVD X copy. The DVD played flawlessly in my Sony 725p dvd player. I didn't like the lame disclaimer that DVDXcopy pasted at the beginning of the dvd, so that will be the last time I use this software.

Next I ripped another dvd and then used CloneDVD to burn the it on Verbatim DVD+r 4X. All done in just under 30 minutes. And again no compatibility issues.

Then I wanted to test cd-r/w. i backed-up a copy of Serious Sam 2 which has safe-disc 2.51 protection. I was not able to make a 1 to 1 backup with my Sony Cd burner, BUT much to my surprise this LG drive made a playable 1 to 1 backup of this game. I have also made some music cds with Nero 6.0019 and backed up some data-cd's on Maxell cd-rw. AND all this without a glitch.

So, from the results of my personal testing, I would recommend this drive. There were some complaints about media compatibility with this drive, but I didn't experience it. Go and buy it cause I think that you'll enjoy it!

Rob

I just picked up this drive for $135 (US) and it's been great so far. The manufacture date is Aug/03 and the firmware is 3.0. So far I've burned to DVD-R(Maxell&TDK) X2, DVD+R(TDK) X4 & DVD-RAM and CD-R(Verbatim) with no problems using Nero in Win98. I've also burned to CD-R & DVD-RAM using K3B in Debian Linux as well. I have to try burning DVD's in Linux next. The DVD-RAM feature is a nice plus and you can't beat the price. The software that came with it is pretty much useless. All the DVD's I've burned play in my Sony DVD player as well as my DVD rom drive (in Win & Linux).

Immediately after installing the drive in the computer I upgraded the firmware to A301. This is really very simple and I don’t think you should be put of by their disclaimer about potentially damaging the drive. I think this is highly unlikely and even if you did I don’t think they would put up a fight were you to return a brand new drive which did not work.

Then installed neo DVD and used it to produce my first DVD. Very straightforward and only took few minutes to produce my first DVD from a AVI file already on my hard drive (using a 2800+ Athlon). Simple piece software but I am sure there is better out there.

Hello! I solved my probelms (i wrote some days ago)...it was faulty (under guarantee of course). I have the new one but it has firmaware A104... reading your comments i understand it will not burn some cheaper dvd at 4x (princo etc.). I would like to update firmwware to a301 version: can someone tell me if gurantee expire doing it? Tks a lot...

Highly recommended! I bought one yesterday and copied 3 DVDs in 6 hours(each DVD needs 2 DVD-R) without any problem. I paid C$167+tax for the drive, in Bulk package, but comes with software, cables and manual. FS is selling for $189 after $80 rebate, you have to pay tax for that $80!
I use the most inexpensive media, prinnco 1X DVD-R, but I wrote in 2X speed for all 6 discs, then played on my panasonic HS700 home theatre flawlessly.
I know it will be cheaper at Xmas, but I just got my 47 inch TV, I couldn't wait!

I'd upgraded the firmware to A301. Still can't burn at 4X. My PC is an AMD-1800 with 640MB RAM. Don't tell me it's not fast enough. The blank DVDs I use are Newcom Professional 4x.

While I had only one coaster after 40 burns, this LG is still a big disappointment. I feel like I'd been cheated.

Had this burner for two weeks, had difficulty burning Princo at 4x until
the A301 Firmware update, now burns at correct speeds on Princo, Ricoh and TDK 4x DVD-RW, some trouble erasing RW in Nero 5.5.10.54, but
strangly CloneDVD asked to overwrite the data before burning a movie backup, been a solid DVD burner since A301 Firmware installed.
Burnt 14 movie backups without any coasters, ( at various speeds. )
Using XP SP1, P4 2.4 without any glitches watsoever.
Good buy, for solid results.

Hello. I bought this drive last week (for € 200), and i saw it was with A300 firmware. I had no problems to burner dvd +r/rw; i tried also one dvd-ram (maxell vers. 2.1/3x supplied with drive) formatted with fat32 and it takes 4 hours for 3 gb data(i don't know if this is normal or if it is very slow...this is my forst dvd writer). I have only a problem, sometimes it crash, and it disappears from windows (Millennium and 2000 Pro) and from bios....i must to turn off pc and then turn on. I don't know if the cause is my pc as it is pentium iii 500 mhz instead of 700 mhz as indicated on the box for min requirements... (someone has the same problems?). I could say this is a very good burner but i am trying to find solution of this problem...

I just puchased my LG 4040B from NewEgg for 167.00 (and thats including free fedex shipping). Recieved my drive in 3 days, and had a 50pack of Princo DVD-R-. The first burn was a coaster, which started to piss me off; then I read about poeple upgrading the firmware to A300. I went to the website and upgraded my firmware (which is one of the easiest i've done to date, and WALLAH...NO COASTERS. The drive is awesome and quiet as hell, I can't complain one bit; and for the price you can't ask for anything better.
By the way the Princo media I purchased was from Media Outlet, I went to pricewatch and purchased a 50Pack for 37.00(Spindle holder). Then went to the local wally world and found slim case covers 6 for 3 dollars. Awesome buy and have backed up about 10 DVD's using dvd xcopy express 3.01. Great program. Nero also works great too.
LG ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've tested with Princo DVD-R and BULKDVD, burning software was

I bought this burner during the FutureShop sale - back a month or so ago. I have checked the comments area since before the purchase. I was well aware of this burner's inability to burn DVD-R discs at 4x. Other than that, I did not see anything that suggested it was a bad burner. I am glad I went ahead and purchased it.

It came with the orignal A104 firmware. I updated to the A300 firmware a few days after purchase, just to ensure that all the bases were covered when trying to burn DVD-R discs at 4x. It still did not work at 4x for DVD-R discs.

I have used DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+RW discs. FLAWLESS. It burned the DVD+R at 4x, DVD+RW at 2.4x and DVD-R at 2x (rated at 4x). The DVD-R discs I did burn at 2x were perfectly fine. I was perfectly happy with the way things were going. Then...

...ten mintues ago, I saw a comment suggesting that a new firmware for this drive, A301 was out. I searched, found, and installed the new firmware. All burning apps now report that I can burn my DVD-R discs at 4x. I have not yet burned a DVD-R at 4x. I will. I doubt I expect any problems.

This is great news!

I highly recommend this DVD burner. I thoroughly researched this burner prior to purchase and have been happy since the buy. COnsidering I waited over a month to write my comments should tell you that I have evaluated this burner thoroughly. The price it has been selling for lately is amazingly low.

Dont use Emtec DVD's or PowerDVD (supplied) with this unit. Bought a batch of DVD-R's from London Drugs in Vancouver and each one turned into a coaster. I have A300 firmware installed and tried DVD-XCOPYXPRESS, CloneDVD, Nero 6 (for data) and every one falied after about the 2 or 3 gb mark on reading.
I changed to Maxell and also Fuji DVD-R's and I have not had a single coaster.
Moral of the story - these units seem to be medi sensitive, buy single packs before a spindle and DONT use PowerDVD as supplied with the unit as it reports errors and wont play even when WinDVD and set top boxes do (Fugi and Maxell disks above).

DVD-R media: Princo 4x DVD-R, Hitech 4x DVD-R, Shintaro 4x DVD-R, Laser 4x DVD-R, Ritech 4x DVD-R, Mitsubishi 70min CD-R, Laser 70min CD-R, Digimedia 90min CD-R.

Using DVDinfo on all the medias with the LG, showing only CLV 2x in the "available write descriptor", tried the same thing on the Pioneer's A06, shows all 1x, 2x and 4x in the "available write descriptor"

Tried many 4x DVD-R media brands, with more than six different commercial/shareware burning softwares, still not be able to burn at 4x speed, showing 2x as the only burning option. (Pioneer's A06/106 OEM can burn all the same medias at 4X speed with any programs without a single glitch).

Audio CD produced from this writer failed to work on the Alpine's flagship $2000 car CD/MP3 player.

DVD-RAM writing speed gets very slow (10MB took 5 minutes to write) when the RAM disc space is low (when disc space is less than 500MB, formatted with UDF1.5 on Win98SE)

Techinical support from LG is worst than worst.
