| After reading all the comments here I decided I would go with this unit as my first purchase of a DVDRW. I've had this burner now for 1 month and so far it works pretty good. I haven't been able to test all of the speeds it's capable of, but I have tested with a few different types of media and different speeds and it has worked flawlessly so far. My only gripe about this unit is that the support from LG has been absolutely terrible. I have been trying to access their website for the firmware upgrades, and I am unable to do so .... so I have emailed and called them and have not got a response so far. The other thing is that I am finding that older CD's that I burned with my older CDRW are sometimes harder to read with this LG burner. So I have been reburning my disks that are of value to me with the LG burner, and then it reads them no problem. But all in all I would recommend this drive. I couldn't go wrong for the price here in Canada ($269 - $80 rebate) so for $189 for a drive that supports all current formats I couldn't pass up the deal. | Well not a good report. I only wanted this drive for data backup so particularly interested in DVD-RW (or DVD+RW). DVR-R ok, DVD-RAM ok, CD-R ok but making coasters of DVD-RW - well at least I think they are coasters - have not been able to write to any DVD-RW yet, Princo, Verbatim or TDK. Both supplied software and Nero v6 claims disks erase but when goes to burn - disks are stated as not erased - endless loop here. No matter if full or quick erase used in either case - no improvment - if clean DVD-RW disk used drops out with "failed to set up the drive" or ATAPI errors. Tried firmware upgrade from 300 to 301 but not even that worked despite having drive as master on secondary bus as instructed (no other drives on the bus). I would suspect my PC after getting ATAPI errors but DVD-R and DVD-RAM burn ok as does CD-R - ie I have to suspect the drive. I will be swapping for a Pioneer A106 today. | I'm on my second one of these drives, the first one was bad (s**t happens). Oh well, this one is flawless! It is very fast and quiet, the only problenm I had so far was with verbatim dvd-rw disks not working, traded them in for some fujifilms and haven't looked back. I am very pleased thus far with this drive. I paid less for this than my first cd writer! It wrote a complete dvd in about 15 - 16 minutes and it is perfect. I couldn't be happier unless it was free. | Well as burner of 2X media (RitekG03's, best bang for the buck, produce error free burns) it's fine (currently only expensive 4X media produces error free burns). As a ripper for those with out a DVDrom it's fast. The -RAM is too slow (1X) making it almost useless. Although fast, for audio/CD-R's the amount of C2 errors produced is staggering. The DAE is also pathetic, Nero CD Speed gives it a 6 out of 10 (almost every drive I've ever tried rates a 10). A very, very, poor choice for burning music. If ripping and burning DVD's at 2X is all you need then it's a decent choice. Except for the ripping speed the Pioneer (which has good compatability with lots of 2X, 4X media)is a better choice and can be had for about the same price these days. | I just bought the LG GSA-4040B. Firmware updated to A301. Burn DVD-R & -RW no with problems. Had one success with DVD+RW but no go for DVD+R. I have tried 3 times now and everytime a coaster. I know the files are correct as I burned them on a DVD-R and they work fine. I use DVD De-crypter for ripping in file mode, DVD clone to convert files to 1 disk size and Nero 6.0.0.0 for burning. I have a Elta 8882 which plays just about anything and people have said it has no problem playing DVD+R (it plays DVD+RW). Could be Nero perhaps? Will try another burning program. | Have had this burner for about 3 weeks. I am very satisfied with it. I have not had to upgrade the firmware either. I have succesfully used memorex and imation media for the burns (dvd+r/+rw). Paid 114 + 3 shipping from accupc. This was an oem version. Using Nero and clonedvd on a win2k machine. All disc I have burned have been playable on my apex dvd player and ps2(without a remote). | To expect every writer to handle every brand of media, shows lack of understanding of the complexities of creating firmware for any given brand of DVD writer. I suggest if you are having problems using for instance, Memorex, as the last poster was, a look at the compatability list would has shown poor results. To give such a poor rating, indicates lack of use of available information. I have already rated this DVD writer 9/10 which is not perfect like most Plextor DVD writers have rated thier drives even when they have reported problems, no 10/10 rating is possible for that is perfection, which is only found in Nature. | upgraded to a301 firmware and still refuses to write my generic 4X rated dvd-r at 4X :( the discs worked fine on my liteon DVD drive, but sucked on my Electrohome DVD player. much skipping. data backup is also fairly flakey (poor reading after writing) but that may be due to my media gonna try some Memorex and Optoplus DvD-r today. if it wont write at 4X its going back for a Pioneer A06 I'll give it a 2 rating so far. You can buy either BOX and OEM and you will NOT find any difference :( Windows 98 couldn't find any DVD driver (standard CD ROM driver was chosen) and it's not enough for VCD EASY which refuses to work with this writer. | Here in Buenos Aires there is not so much offer of brands. Only this LG, some pioneers, sony dru510 and two or three more. This is the cheapest. Bought it this morning with some media (Verbatim +RW +R). Installed it in a couple of minutes, and turn pc on. I had already installed Roxio easy cd/dvd creator 6 and nero 6, both with the last upgrades. The drive was inmediatly recognized by Windows XP Pro. Without installing any extra software than the one i used with my liteon 48x24x48 to burn SVCD, burned (in +RW) a dvd image from my last hollidays in Egypt, created with DVD Maestro (using easy cd/dvd creator), put it in my Philips DVD 703 (Firmware 4.5V.45-O) and it worked as expected (5 menus, 2 audio tracks, 2 subtitle tracks). After test in the dvd player, i copied on the fly the +RW to +R using the Samsung DVD-ROM. Again no coasters and the +R played excellent in the DVD player. Erased the +RW and format it to use as Backup. Did the same with Maxell DVD-RAM that came in the box. NOT A COASTER TILL NOW. Equipment i use: P IV 1.7GHz on Intel Motherboard 128 Ram Nvidia GForce FX 5200 2 HDs 60Gigs and 120 Gigs Sound Blaster Live Canopus ADVC 100 to capture video Promise Ultra 100 Controler for another 4 IDE Devices (total 8 ide devices) Liteon 48x24x48 Samsung DVD-Rom LG GSA 4040B Firmware 300 (from factory and not upgraded) Editing Soft: Premiere Pro DVD Author Soft: DVD Maestro Absolutely a must buy for price and reliability. No need to buy more expensive writers (after all when they break its almost imposible to repair, and whith the money you save you can buy your next one, may be with dual layer capability). | Just a quick update to my previous comment. I was having a problem with burning at 4x. I was using Memorex DVD-r which was stated to be 4x but for some reason I was unable to do so. I decided to try the Memorex DVD+r 4x media and I can now burn at 4x, so I guess it's true that some of these DVD Burners are media sensitive. Anyhow I am very happy with my drive. | GREAT burner. But the software is nothing to write home about. I´ve tried the burner for 14 days now and had some problems, where my discs could´n be played on my stand alone player (United 3052M), but after many days and hours it is working now, at last. There are no support from LG electronics, every time I have called or email them, they said the same thing, "it´s problely your stand alone DVD", I don´t think they now what they are doing in that company. I´f you are using the software "Neo Burning", and living in Denmark, be sure that it says PAL DENMARK, or you will use a lot of time for nothing. | Got this burner from mwave.com for around $130US including shipping and tax. I flashed to the A301 firmware. The system is a win2k sp4 and the drive is on its own ide channel as master. I have tried two types of 4x dvd-r media and have only gotten 2x using dvd decrypter. I've tried Memorex and Princo (although the princo is not identified as such; it has a plain white top surface). Other than that nit, which I still hope to overcome (maybe with some Ritek G04) this burner is very nice. | To format DVD-RAM the program provided with the Box don´t work. I formated de DVD-RAM with the Windows XP Explorer: click with de right bottom of the mouse over de DVD-RAM, choose format and format de DVD-RAM in FAT32. If this don´t work at the first time, try another time. Could be happen that when you click over the DVD-RAM unit with the blank DVD-RAM into, the system display that the disk is without format, and ask you if you want format it. | This DVD writer is really good. I burned about 25 Princo DVD-Rs at 2x without any problem. I didn´t try to upgrade to firmware A301 yet, but I´ll do it soon. The only problem I got was using Nero. With Nero 6 all the disc I burned had problems when playing/forwarding/seeking on PowerDVD (the discs played without any problem on WinDVD, Windows Media Player and standalone players). I tried to update Nero and the problem was not solved. Then I decided to use B.H.A Recorder Gold5 (the software that came with the LG4040b) and everything worked fine (no more problems playing with PowerDVD). I didn´t try Nero 5. B.H.A Recorder Gold5 maybe is not the best software but since I learned how to use it I am satisfied. | Bought an OEM from AccuPC.COM $117 shipping included. Burns -2X Maxell,-TDK and Ritek 2X DVD-RW at 2.4. Burns 4X +/- Ritek at 4X. All except the +4X play fine in PC and Pioneer 503. The +4X plays fine in the PC but not in the Pioneer. Couldn't get the unit to see the Ritek DVD-RAM. If I find another media local I'll try. | Ok, I waited until I had a chance to actually used this burner. I've burned backups of most of my DVD's I have here at home. All have worked in my Sony DVD NP-325 player with no problems except for some CompUSA DVD+R 1X discs that could not be recognized in the computer or DVD player. I know data was written to them but they show up in My Computer as blank. Used DvDinfoPro and it shows them as blanks also. I've used Imation DVD+RW, Compusa DVD-R DVD-RW and Verbatim DVD-R 4X disc. I think I will keep using the CompuUSA DVD-R dics because they are cheap a buck a piece if you buy the two packs, but if you buy in bulk 25 or more it comes to $1.40 a piece,odd. The burned has been upgraded to firmware A301. Got a deal at newegg for 139US. I probably need to try different media but at a buck a piece I think I'll stay with CompUSa,even if it's slower 1x media. Using Nero 6.0 it still burns them at 2x,2.4x. I have used DVD decrypter,DVD Shrink and a trial version of DVD Xcopy Express and they all worked great but I think I will use DVD Shrink since it's freeware>DVDXcopy Express was by far the easiest to use but at 59.00 bucks I'll use the money to buy blanks.
