| I haven't had any problems with this piece of hardware at all! It's been great. People only seem to look it up and post when it's having problems so I figured I'd add my experience, too. The only problem I've ever had with it is cyclic read errors, but I'm thinking that may not actually be a problem with the drive itself. | Its a piece of crap I have tried sony dvd -r and memorex +r's to write an iso file and it gets to writing at 3% tray opens says its done yet another toaster cd.. will never use another toshiba product again Comments posted by reveal from United States, September 12, 2007. | Even with the TU15 f/w update, I am unable to write DVD .iso images. Have tried Memorex DVD+R and Verbatim DVD-R discs. What a junky drive. I should have bought a Sony or LG... | Well, I was having the same problems as everyone else with this writer, but after I read the comment about the TU15 update, I figured I'd try it before I completely gave up. I ran the update and this POS writer turned itself around completely! If you have this writer, you HAVE to install the firmware. It's real easy, it's just an EXE you download, you press update and it finishes in less than a minute. | very bad burner. I had only only problems with burning, lost a lot of discs. i got it with a lidl-pc. PC is ok, burner is driving me nuts. Doesn't burn dvd+RW on 4-speed. Doesn't overburn dvd. Doesn't burn 90-min cd's. Generally, in the first minute of burning (after burning lead-in) it just starts spinning the dvd and stalls for more than a minute. So it always spends at least 1.5 min more than estimated, even on the lowest speeds. 16-speed is like burning on 6-speed. Comments posted by Frustrated from Netherlands, September 23, 2006. | I give it a 2 simply because sometimes it is able to write DVDs, but the error rate makes it impossible to use with applications that aren't resilient to errors (such as the included NERO backup software). After writing 8 dvds in a backup it fails and I either start over or abort the idea of backing up my computer to DVD. Then... I tried to write a data CD. It never did it. | TOSHIBA CD/DVDW SDR5372V using firmware TU15 Manufactured: April 2005 What a dissapointment ! Bought it at retail for $75 - $25 Mail-in Rebate I wasn't able to have a single good Dual Layer burn yet. Might be my particular unit -- but from comments I've read on several sites, now I can see that I made a terrible mistake. Oh well... need to pack it and off it goes. ============================= Burning Software Used: Nero 7 Ultra (ver 7.0.0.0) Nero 6.6 Ultra (ver 6.6.0.16) VSO CopyToDVD ver 3.1.2 ============================= Media Used: Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x (2.4x - 6x; Mitsubishi "MKM 001" media code) TDK DVD+R DL 2.4 (Ricoh "RICOHJPND00" media code) ============================= Nero was able to finish writing Layer 1; error would occur at layer change. | Unreliable w/ stock firmware, somewhat better with updated firmware. Had good luck with Memorex 16x -R, but only burned at 4x. Mixed results (12 out of 50 were coasters) with TDK 16x +R, which would burn @ 8x. Bad results with Memorex 8x +R (5 out of 5 coasters). | Very disappointing. I had still hundreds of Memorex DVD's (CMC MAG.E01) burnt with 100% success with 8X speed on the Nec writers ND-1300A and ND-3520A. But with Toshiba SD-R5372V, even a write speed of 2.4X fails 50% of the time. Also tried various other media, but no reliable burn results. I only got good results with very expensive Sony DVD's. | Very bad recording: the quality is so-so even with Verbatim (K-probe doesn't work, had to check on another drive), coasters with cheaper media. Couldn't write at all to HP branded 8x DVD-R discs (CMC MAG. AE1). Very slow disc recognition. As of Sep 2,2005 there is no firmware update to address any of the issues. | this drive has very poor media compatability most disks only write at x4 or x6, great lack of firmware updates. bought this drive from pc world it was badged as a freecom classic external drive, would not recomend.
