| HI guys just bought the Pioneer Ao6 from a comp store in Toronto for $150 CDN. This machine is great I have so far have created over 20 DVDs and not a single coaster. | Ahhhh!! I bought the Sony one that had the same compatability (+r/w,-r/w,cdrw,etc,the works!). Returned it because it cost a bitch-load of money. $350, plus tax almost 400. Eventully traded it for the HP which was only $250. Only does +r/w,cdrw. And now this one comes out! Argh Anyway, haven't tried it but from all the other comments and votes, seems great. | I have the 106D (OEM) version of this drive. Have tried Sky 4X -R, Ritek G04 4X -R, and CompUSA 2.4X +R discs. No errors yet on 40+ movie backups. So far I'm very satisfied with this drive. Response to "Bull": Here is what works for me.... use DVD Decrypter (3.1.7) to rip to the hard drive/remove copy protection. Smartripper (2.41) is a good alternative if DVD Decypter give errors, and vice versa. Second, DVD Shrink (3.0 Beta 5) works great if you need to compress the movie to fit it on a single disc. A lot of DVDs are dual layer, so you need to compress or else span over two discs. I compress everything that needs it, the quality loss is minimal. Also, I've flashed the firmware to support region-free, up to 12x ripping, and better blank media support at http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/ Before flashing the rip speed was around 2x. I can't confirm anything else as I didn't test it before I flashed. I burn using Nero 6, haven't tried other burning software with this drive. | A fantastic burner. This is my first DVD burner and I am glad I bought this one although initially I was settling for Optowrite. Not a single coaster - I have burnt 15 Datalife (Prodisk Taiwan) x4 General DVD-R @ full 4+ speed. | Great drive,burns anything u throw at it.My only problem was that the read and write speeds were very slow,about 40 min each.My pc is a good spec so i was upset to say the least cos i was hearing ppl were burning in 15 mins. So i changed the firmware but still no change in the times. So to cut a long story short i fixed the problem. click Start-settings-control panel-system-hardware-device manager-IDE ata/ATAPI Controllers. Now make sure both channels are set to use DMA.Do this by getting properties of each channel and select the ADVACNCED SETTINGS tab.Change "transfer mode" to "DMA IF AVAILABLE" .PIO only is CPU intensive and slows everything down. MY write time is now approx 15 min....20 min faster than before change. | I have no other DVD burner to compare this to. Wanted to thank everyone for their comments on this one. It worked right out of the box using Memorex DVD-R. Resulting test DVD played on my Sony 5-disc changer, which was a surprise. Didn't play on my Apex but I found out I have to upgrade the player to make it work with DVD-R's. | Ordered 106D OEM from ebuyer. £70+vat. Stonking Dual DVD player/recorder. Plays/Records anything you throw at it. Likes Datarite DVD-R's. Writes to DVD's at 5.5mb / sec with burnproof 2mb buffer. Silent operation. Great build quality. Wouldn't bother with the Retail box, save the money and buy Nero 6 instead. No coasters yet - well recommended. | Just bought the Writer today for £85 at a computer fair. Having struggled with the Sony DW-U10 for a year, mostly with compatibility problems with media. I'm impressed burnt 10 DVD's with no problem on a variety of media (all-R) no problems. I’d give it 10 but it only rips at x2. | Souper Drive!!! i am working one month now with this burner and no problems at all..burning every media you will put into it,no coasters so far in any output format..movies or data.Bought the A06 version in Vienna/Austria for 150euros. | I had a few troubles with this DVD-writer, which I have now ironed out. At first it recorded fine at 4x speed. However, suddenly it would only write at 1x speed or 2x speed at a push. I'm not sure why but it seems that my configuration required the Adaptec Aspi 4.6 drivers rather than the updated 4.7. If anyone else has problems writing at 4x speed when your system isn't exactly lagging in spec, then just go to the site below and download the 4.6 drivers. I'm not sure if it was Windows XP SP1, Direct X 9 or any other updates I'd installed but Aspi 4.6 works fine with my machine now. | best decision i could make was to purchase the pioneer dvr-106d. this is an excelent writer i installed it in my home built pc about a month ago running windows 98 se, using clone dvd for backing up my dvd's and using anydvd for write protection issues. using x-treme dvd-r's have also used optodisk dvd+rw's and princo dvd-r's. the x-treme dvd-r's seem to work the best! only coasters that were created were caused by my stupidity! "burning a dvd and downloading 50 things off of kazaa is just stupidity! :o/ have been playing my backups on my sony 5 disk player model dvp-nc615 and several other of my friends players. the only problem i have had was on a couple older apex players that also wouldnt play princo brand dvd-r's or optodisk dvd+rw's. i give this burner a 10 Comments posted by keven from Other, December 16, 2003. | I just installed the DVR-A06U in my Dell Dimension 2350 running Windows XP. From what I've experienced so far, the drive writes 2X DVD+/- just fine, but won't write a 4X DVD+. I have the latest firmware (v 1.07) and the Pioneer website doesn't indicate any know problems. I've heard the 4X writers may have a problem with Dell computers, but haven't found my specific model on their problem list. I've sent e-mails to both manufacturers. We'll see what they have to say. | I'm useing retik G4's and no coasters. DVD-r works in my xbox and I had to figure out the right settings in NERO to get it to work right. | Just bought this burner from ComputerFest, a.k.a. CompuSale, for $180 CDN, yes, Canadian, thats pretty cheap, compared to some of the prices you US guys have been paying for this drive. Anyways, I loaded the hacked firmware onto it, I find it reads/rips pretty fast. Ive never had any problems with it so far, its given me great burn results, both with +r and -r discs.
