Bought this burner in MicroCenter today in Santa Clare $99 -$20 rebate, still got 6 to 7 remain on special counter. The box label MD-16XDVD9-EXT in stead of MD-16XDVD9A2-EXT, but the drive label is MD-16XDVD9A2 as same as NEC 3520a. Update to firmware 1.F3 before perform the following test I could not wait for firmware upgrade on Maddog website to support DVD-RL. I see NEC also release firmware for internal verison of ND-3520a. I do not have chance to remove the drive from the closure and connect to IDE to upgrade the latest NEC version 3.04 to check if DVD-RL available with DVDINFO.exe (FYI: NEC website recommand not to update firmware using USB or IEEE 1394) Anyway, so far burning HP DVD+R 8x (purple color disc) has no problem. Disc copy DVD vidoe clip using Nero (DVD own by my local chuch, no copyright issue here ^_^) using build-in Thinkpad T41 as source drive slow down a bit due to recovery from buffer underrun in every 10 second while copying. If using Ulead movie factory 2, it seem to be ok. (I can't see the buffer level inside Movie factory 2 but at least I do not see the burner light on and off in few second.) I also copy tons of data form an ethernet 100 Mbit/s NAS box , of course buffer under run will occur every time. Well as least the unit able to burn successfully. (just take more time. I picked this thing up at MicroCenter last week. It is the USB 2.0 version which I was kinda iffy on how good a dvd burner would work on USB. It was a 100 bucks plus a 20 dollar mail in rebate, so really it was 80 bucks. I have burnt about 100 or so dvds within the last week and not one coaster. It was so good I bought another for my computer at work, so while at work im ripping and burning. Anyways this burner rocks. I also have the internal version which came with a computer I bought from a friend of mine. Same goes for it, rock solid. A must buy, cant go wrong with this burner.
