I've had this drive for a little less than a week, and so far I am loving it. Installation was a breeze, just swapped out my old DVD-rom drive and stuck this one in it's place, and everything worked like a charm (WinXP Pro). One minute later I was recording at 4x to a Fuji DVD-R, which played flawlessly on my Toshiba SD1600 player. I have recored twice more and it has worked great. The several CD-Rs I've burnt with it have worked great too.
The only disapointing thing is the DVD rip speed (2X), I had to put my old DVD-rom back in just for ripping.

I bought the drive, new, at a swap-meet. it installed ok and can read
discs... but... I found that after installing the software, my hard drive
crashed very badly. not even safe-mode worked. I was able to recover
lost data and reformat and re-load win98se [xp won't work on my mother
board [abit bx-133 raid]. I installed the software again and got a
repeat performance from my hard drive. yes it's possible I have a bad
drive but I tested it and it seemes to be ok. so I read here that
someone got it going without the actual sony software... ok, I loaded
up nero 5.5 but the drive isn't recognised as a dvd unit by the
software. I tried erasing a dvd-rw but it wouldn't go. I'm sure
somehow I'll get this thing going, but so far... it's a good *reader*.

I bought the DRU-510A and it burns OK but it cannot read what it burns. I took back the first unit and got a replacement. The second unit has the same problem. When the drive is set for DMA mode, it cannot even read the S/W DVD shipped with the drive. When I set it to PIO mode, it will read the S/W DVD, but DVD movie playback is garbled (not as bad as DMA mode, but you won't want to watch the movie). I am runing Windows XP Pro.

I also purchased DW-U14A and installed in my machine. Everything looks fine (I still did not have chance to burn a DVD yet) except DVD-ROM read speed is only 2X (using Nero Info Tool). DVD Decripter also shows the ripping speed is no more than 2X compared by Lite-On DVD-ROM drive's 8X. Anyone has same problem? Firmware is 1.0c which is the latest.
Also notice that DW-U14A has different face plate than DRU-510A (looks much urglier and the tray shakes while ejecting).

I just purchased a Sony DWU-14A (OEM) for $188. I used my Haupaugge 250 card for recording live television and then used Movie Factory DVD SE 2 for authoring and burning. The process worked flawlessly on my DVD+RW Fuji DVD's. I even had no problem playing the DVD in my Mintek 1600. I will test more later.

I am not happy with this burner I have tried two differnt brands at 4 speed and only get coasters the drive stops a 4 speed after one minute, the same discs will burn a 4 speed in a Pioneer A06. Cd spped is supposed to be 24 but only burn at 12 speed on cds that burn at 40 spped on a Lite On burner. I would not recommend this burner and it is not worth the extra price you pay for it. This drive was made in August in Malaysia and has the latest firmware.

I bought this Sony DVD Writer after my old Pioneer A05 bite the dust after almost year of heavy use ( I burned a lot of DVDs, the symptom with A05 was that it became very choosie on the media it would use and would only burn Pioneer, Verbatim and Ritek dark purple media), I therefore went out bought the Sony DVD writer and so far the burner have burned almost twelve discs and spit out two discs, the result of each burns is OK but what I don't like Sony is its ripping speed, the drive have an advertised DVD reading speed of 12x but it would only rip DVDs at 2x which is much slower than the older A05, the disc drawer does not open and close as quitely as the old Pioneer. I am hoping Sony can update their firmware to increase the ripping speed in the meantime I am using my DVD-ROM to do the reading work.

After several days research I purchased from from the States (I live in Ireland). Set up was easy, once I'd figured out where to put it in my DELL (I'm no techie) and Windows XP recognised it straight away.

Upgraded the firmware to 1.0c via the Sony website : http://tinyurl.com/mvag and off we went.

Using Nero 6.0.15 for imaging and burning and to date I've only had a problem with 2 DVD-R discs which refused to burn correctly. Other than that I'm burning discs in around 20 mins from images on my hard drive and no problems to report.

Not tried any 4x media as yet but it works happily enough burning at 2.4x speed on my DVD+RW discs and 2x on my DVD-R discs.

My set top DVD player, a Toshiba SD185, refuses to play +R media so I won't be burning those!

I bought this drive (OEM version of the DRU-500A) a few weeks ago, and have stuck to discs with Ritek dyes as that is what was recommended to me. No problems at all. I did not need to install any software at all (win2000); all I did was swap my old DVD-ROM for this drive, and windows took care of the rest. Burns faster than I thought it might, a full DVD film from a DVD burns in 20 minutes or so (2x) :)

I bought this unit less than 30days ago. I have already made well over 100 different movies with only 2 coasters, and they were due to software error. I prefer the Memorex, and compusa dvd-r's they work like a charm

Bizarre, MOFOing DVD writer. Well it all started badly when i burned using Ritek 4x using Firmware 1.0 and it would only burn at 2x. Updated it to 1.0c and it sorted it out. One week later and it's back burning them at 2x again. :-( Really Odd and the Sony support sucks. However i did upgrade to a P4 too after the firmware upgrade so i'm think it could be a power problem. AIDA 32 is giving me 4.19V on the 5V line, so i'm not so sure. But either way, it's going back, unless someone agrees with me.

I bought this SONY-510A drive last month from Amazon.com ($286) and didn't have any problem in installing with XP-PRO. So far, I tired PRINCO -R 1x, OPTODISC -R 1X and MEMOREX +R 4x discs and it rocks!. It burned OPTODISC at 2X speed, but I didn't beleive it. Then, I used DVDinfo to check the media and it showed drive speed as 2x. I was happy that I got those disc at local store for 99 cents. I used MyDVD, STUDIO 8 and Veritas software which comes with the drive.

bought this drive from best buy the other day.
installed it, popped in the software that came with it and all i got were error messages. some of the error messages indicated missing dll files and one dialogue box just had question marks in it. i upgraded to 1.06c firmware, reinstalled the ide controllers, switched my burner to slave, master, primary, secondary and still got the same errors. the only way i got it to work was by disabling dma for the burner. i talked to a sony teir 2 support tech and she said the only way it will work is by disabling dma and removing all other cd burning software from my system. there's no way i would use a dvd burner without dma. i tried watching a movie without dma and it was choppy and the sound was a little distorted.
system specs:
1.2 amd
1 gb of RAM
windows xp sp 1
i'm going to wait for the 8x's and stay away from the sony brands.

I bought the DRU510A in June in Akihabara, Tokyo, for 240 Euros.
Great deal, great DVD burner, no problems.
Works fine with all the software I've used, works fine with different DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW I've here.
No tests with Memorex stuff.

Just purchased this drive from Circuit City last week. I've burned Comp-USA -R +R & +RW at 2.4X with no coasters. Used Nero 5.5, RecordNow DX and Pinnacle Studio 8 to burn with no problems. Just ordered a 25 pack of Ritek 4X -R blanks to try burning at 4X.

So far this drive is working great.

Just purchased the drive last Friday.

Battled all week-end to write family video or even dumb jpg file on Memorex DVD-RW before trying DVD-R.
No success with Veritas, MyDVD or Pinnacle Studio 8.

Upgraded to 1.0C FW, tested with Sony check program. Returned the Memorex DVD-RW to vendor for a Sony.

Several comments on problems with memorex on web sites, confirmed by Sony help desk.

Will test again tonite.

I've had ZERO problems with mine. Works well with DVD XCOPY and XPRESS, Alchohol 120 and 52, and every other program I've thrown at it. AND, fortunately, it ain't picky about media, I've recorded on some really cheap shit, comes out great, and i've played other peoples really cheap shit that would not play on other DVD's. I think this is the one I've beeen waiting for. Haven't been able to stop it yet. With 8 meg of cache, there's just NO WAY your going to make toasters any more, not mention Buffer underun technology.

I just got this burner last week and made 4 backups for my kids. Not one single coaster. i also did a backup of one of my hard drives. Again no coaster. I used Fuji film 2.4x +R's. I used only one 4x disk (+R) which was a Maxell. love the 4x speed. I have only great things to say about installation. I worked perfectly upon bootup. xp recognized it and within a few minutes i was burning. Sony realy did a nice job with this drive. I can't say much about the software it came with, i use other programs so never installed the disc.

I just bought a 510A and have been unable to record at any speed on any CD-R media. (Tried Memorex, TDK and 'Made In Japan' Fujifilm.) However, tried Memorex DVD-R and DVD+R no problem.

But, I am considering returning the unit on principle, even though I can still record CD-Rs on my faster 52x/24x CD-R unit.

Have heard of others with similar problems. Seems like Sony might have some problems in their ability to produce quality DVD recorders, the other positive reviews notwithstanding...

Please note that the Sony DRU510A is not quite compatible with MEMOREX DVD-RW/DVD-R blank media. Highly recommend, following brands:
FUJIFILM, TDK, SONY, COMPUSA, IMITATIONS. On the contrary, +RW/+R blank medias tend to work just fine, with the exception of MEMOREX blank media. Eventhough the included software, "Record NOW DX (Veritas)" is great for backing up your hard drive, as well as copying data, video, and music (drag & drop features), I would have prefered the infamous and popular "ROXI EASY CD CREATOR 6.0 PLATINUM"< which in my opion, "ROCKS"!

I only had the drive in the computer for about 10 days before it failed. The drive locked up with no response, tray open would not operate, and the drive activity indicator LED began nonstop rapid blinking.
The drive has been sent back to the supplier for replacement.
I see several others on this forum have had the exact same problem.

beware!!
