Found and downloaded latest firmware upgrade,(look under France) all went well. But accoring to Philip's techie guys there is no way that this drive is capable if burning anything other than DVD+RW,s. Anybody want to buy a DVD Burner? I've had this burner almost a week. My first succesfully burned dvd played perfect on my stand alone player (apex ad-5131). Lent the dvd to a friend who has the same stand alone player and it won't work on his. Also, the dvd+rw won't play on my portable dvd player. Thinking of returning it and getting one that will burn DVD+R format just to experiment and see if that format is more compatilbe. I think buying DVD+RW's over a period of time will add up. Getting a burner that will write to DVD+R might pay for itself for now to make up for the price differnece of the burners as I plan to use my dvd drive a lot. Still have a lot to learn as it appears to be an art to rip and author dvd's..... Comments posted by John from Other, June 24, 2002. Rated this writer No rating. |

I have had no problems with this drive, but I have only just discovered it won't write to DVD+Rs (or DVD-R) this is a bit pants really. I have emailed Philips to no avail (well their site is rubish after all), so would anyone know if this drive is FIRMWARE UPGRADEABLE?. It would be quite a respectable machine if you could actually use it properly. Comments posted by Myke from Other, June 23, 2002. Rated this writer No rating. |

I have had no problems with this recorder. I installed it, the software, re-encoded a movie to DVD with Tmpgenc, and burned it with My DVD that came with the recorder. I played the movie all the way through and the audio was there throughout the whole movie. BTW I picked up the recorder at Circuit City on sale for $299.99 Comments posted by Chris from Other, June 18, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Finally getting software issues figuired out here. Dumped Mydvd in favor of Dazzle capture with MovieStar software. So far working great, Able to capture what I want and length I want it.I am disappointed in Philips compatibitly, only writing to dvd+rw and is such a terribly slow process.Had to buy new dvd player that was compatible with dvd+rw. Should have done better research before I bought. Still trying to figuire out why Nero bundled software won't let me use video dvd funtion. Even purchased key and still no luck. RETRACTION: The Dup-DVD key I said I have is a none working key sorry for the bad info. I thought the Phillips DVDRW was suppose to write +RW,-RW and -R Comments posted by Guy from Other, March 18, 2002. Rated this writer No rating. |

I do not mind it will not write DVDRW+R, when you have a hobby with video, you can always wait to get the newest machines, I think you will have no hobby at all, you will allways wait. Now I can put my videoproduct on a DVD, and play it on the settop DVD player, when I experience some faults in the editing, I re-edit my videoproduct, and burn it again to the RW. You learn to handle your videocamera, to handle the videoediting programm and some authoringprogramms, how they work, and what they can do. So the machine is very usefull. But the arrogance of Philips, not answering my questions is enough to stop buying their products in the future. I think that they can exists without costumers. Ok guys. From the horses mouth (ok a VP level person in the pc peripherals department. The philips DVDRW208 WILL NOT SUPPORT +R writing!. This is the final answer. Just so you know....Some may not care. I care, so I had to return the drive. I was fortunate enough to be able to do this. I will however plan on buying the next version that will, the DVDRW228. I am a little miffed at philips and HP for keeping this little gem a secret. I would have said the heck with it and buy the A03, but I still believe that the + format is the better of the two (assuming the compatibility is high with set top DVD players). I recently purchased Philips DVD+RW 208 and had it installed by BBY. Works great without any problem. Just a friendly note for any body buying Philips DVD+RW208- stay away from the bundled software My DVD. Don't even install it, save yourself a lot of time woundering if there is naything wrong with your MPEG file, audio will record only for 19 to 20 minutes regardles of total lenghth of your movie. I spent numerous hours trying to figure out the problm using more then one file. I feel that Sonic should declare on the product that "this is a sample product and will not record audio for the entire file" They are quite clear saying that" We do not provide technical support for the bundled software". Hope, my experience will help those of you trying to use bundled My Dvd. Comments posted by Naren from Other, March 09, 2002. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Got this drive because of the reported problems with the Pioneer and via chipsets. Let's just say I'm very happy. 2.4x really is about the same as 20x on a CD-R....and I am a not very patient! Right now Best Buy has this drive for $499, but you get a $100 Gift Card with its purchase. So, did I really pay $399? I would have blown another $100 there in a week or two easily. I turned around and used my gift card to buy media for the thing...which ain't cheap! PS. Gave it a 9 cause it's still pretty expensive. Cheers JT Comments posted by JT from Other, March 06, 2002. DVD+R should be written at least 2.4 speed, this writer cannot write 1 speed ! it is blocked for lower speeds, maybe someone dares to crack the machinecode. I heard DVD+R will be available in May 2002 ? What is the common price for DVD+rw, I pay at the moment 12,70 euro for Philips DVD+RW, is there cheaper. Funny is that when you make an DVD-ready file with a size bigger than 3900 Mb you cannot burn it to the disk with DVD-it or MyDVD. Now I use the dvd-plugin from MSP6.0 writing up to 4495 Mb. using less for menu. Comments posted by HansH from Other, March 06, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

No DVD+R burning (yet? - and if so it will only be at 1x..argh), DVD+RW isn't as compatible as I had hoped. ReelDVD will not burn to this drive (or DVD+RW media) from within the program. Kinda hoped for more, or wish I went with a DVD-R drive...still holding out for the second gen DVD+R drives... Comments posted by Meek from Other, March 05, 2002. Rated this writer 2 of 10. |

Drive installed and came up without a hitch. Writing is fast and reliable in both CD-R/RW and DVD+RW modes. I bought the drive to author Video DVDs and it seems to be working well - I'm quite satisfied with it, and glad I went for the DVD+RW format. DVDs authored on the drive play on my Sony DVD players without problems. Two software notes - the older version of Easy CD Creator (version 4) doesn't recognize this drive. The drive came with Nero 5.5, which works just fine, but CD to CD copying isn't as convienent as with the Adaptec software (multiple copies are awkward). The Sonic "MyDVD" authoring software that came with the drive is essentially useless. Captures from my DV camera garble the input sound, and importing large .mpg files crashes the application as often as not. Scene/thumbnail management (even if the software worked) is too limited to be of much use. Do yourself a favor - go get a copy of Ulead's MovieFactory or Pinnacle's Express DV to start with. One last note - the DVD+RW media, once written, doesn't seem to read in older DVD-ROM drives. I have a DVD-ROM drive that's about 18 months old in the system along with the DVD+RW drive - it won't read the DVD+RW disks. Comments posted by Todd from Other, February 22, 2002. Writing with the DVDRW208 If you read the technical specifications, this drive supports 4 speed and higher DVD-R(W). If you try it with a 2 speed DVD-R(w), the device will not come online beacaus it must burn wit 2.5 speed (in Nero it stays waiting for device). Hans H. Philips seems to be wavering on whether the driver will be able to write to +R disks or not. HP already said their drive will not, will Phillips? They are not the same drive I have been told. Comments posted by Ron C from Other, February 16, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

Easy to install, no problems for the two weeks I have had it. Works great in my Pioneer 333 standalone and IBM laptop DVD. HP +RW media available at buy.com for $7.00(US)each. Authoring a DVD is still an art however. Everyone is waiting for a +R drive to come out but why? This is a great burner! Comments posted by timbuktu from Other, February 15, 2002. Drive does all it is supposed to do (including DVD+RW)and seems well-made. I wish I could find software to allow controlled overwrites as the video players have. Comments posted by Richard from Other, February 10, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

Guys, get it straight... In terms of *compatibility*, DVD-RW and DVD+RW are roughly equal. DVD-R is more compatible with set top DVD players; IT is the one with higher reflectivity. DVD+R is supposed to be similar, but we won't know for sure until the media comes out. THAT'S what I'm waiting for. Comments posted by Jester from Other, February 05, 2002.
