Installed the TDK-840G drive as slave to Lite-On DVD-ROM. No problems once the firmware was flashed. Burns FUJI DVD+R between 4x->8x effortlessly. DVD and CD-RW's burn fine as well. No problems transferring media to various standalones . Most burning software recognizes and supports the drive. I didn't know it was a OEM Plextor 708 when I got it.

I highly recommend this drive. Be sure to do the firmware upgrade to the drive immediately after installation..

Sepen, can you tell us how you flashed the firmware with the Plextor 1.04 version? What lines did you have to change and what did you have to change them to? Thanks in advance.

Picked this up at Staples. It is the Plextor 708. I even flashed it to the Plextor 1.04 firmware, just had to change two lines in the ini file. It works perfectly. Burns TDK and Memorek 4x +r at 8x speeds. I have used Nero, DVDDecrypter and Easy CD with it and they all work fine with it. Has a black face plate to.

Great Drive! Same as the Plextor 708A. Usually all TDK CD/DVD RW products are the same as Plextor, and burning cd's @ 40x is a bonus. Great buy.

Just did an upgrade to my system: TDK 840G, ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro, Maxtor 200gb 8mb buffer HDD. I have had good results and value from my TDK 40/12/48B CD burner, so when I heard that TDK and others were coming out with 8x DVD burners I looked at the TDK. I have heard it is basically the same as the Plextor but with a lower price point. So far I am very happy with it. My only gripe is that they bundled Roxio Easy CD/DVD 6 with it, I already had Nero Ultra 6 and have had no trouble with Nero but several issues with Roxio.

After trying 3 different Plextor 708's from best buy, I thought I would give the TDK 840 a try. On the Plextor drives, anything I would try to burn above 2x would fail. I really wanted the 708 because of all the good things I heard about it. I think they must have got a bad batch of them. As it ends up even with my TDK, I got a plextor 708 anyway. At least thats what im hearing from the net, thats it's actually a plex 708. It burns all 4x rated media that I have tried at 8x(tdk,memorex,maxell). Overall I'm very happy with this drive. With the ability to read and write cdr's at 40x, you don't really need a cdrw drive anymore. A very fine drive!

Purchased this drive locally at Best Buy (bricks and mortar) for $250, not on sale.

Drive looks and acts identically to the Plextor 708A in every way and is a fantastic drive. (It IS an OEM'ed Plextor 708A)

Burns on 8X on the same discs as the Plextor. I have tried (successfully) Maxell 2x DVD-R (burned at 2x), Ritek 2X G03 DVD-R (burned at 2x), Apple 4X DVD-R (at 4X), TDK 4X DVD+R (burned at 8X), Memorex 4X DVD+RW (burned at 4X), Fuji 2.4X DVD+RW (burned at 2.4x) and probably more I haven't thought of.

Plus 40X CDRs from all kinds of manufacturers at 40X.

A direct physical comparison of my drive and a plextor is located at:

(Note this is a Geocities page and if it gets overloaded will disappear.)
