| Excellent burner. Sony / NEC / OptiArc AD-5170A, bought on 10th January 2007 from Lightning Computers ( www.lightning-computers.co.uk ) in Duke Street, St.Helens, Merseyside, England. V1.11 stock firmware. Got the black bezel version. Tray loading mechanism a bit cheap sounding compared to my ND-3540A. Drive seems to be quieter at all speeds than my ND-3540A and reads discs just a little better (very slightly lower error rate). Burns RiDisc 52 x CD-R's at 16 x (my preferred speed, but can do them at 48 x if I want to) in Nero Express with max C1 errors 25, and average about 1, and no C2 errors, at 16 speed, with absolutely no problems, which is excellent quality IMHO, and these CD's then play in all my players including portable Sony Discman D131. Burns Ritek G05 8 x DVD-R at my preferred 4 x (can burn at 8 x if wanted) in Nero / Express / Recode with absolutely no problems. Reads back in DVD decrypter / Windows Explorer at top speed (16 x) at all times with no read errors. These DVD's then play in all my players including Technika DVD-104, no errors when watching movies when played back on the DVD-104 via my Infocus IN72 video projector. Only thing the AD-5170A does not like is doing Nero CD/DVD speed "disc quality scan" on CSS protected commercial discs, where it does not work properly and freezes the application but not WinXP and then a reboot is needed as I cannot clear the fault (locks the drive and Explorer...). Also transfer rate test in same application reads DL commerical DVD video discs at 5 to 12 speed on layer 1 but then dropped to 3 to 4 speed for layer 2, not sure why...possibly 2nd layer is riplocked for this drive...maybe Liggy's firmware would correct this? However it still rips at top speed on both layers on DVD decrypter. Odd. Hence 1 star less for this problem. Good value of drive (24 GBP cost). Hopefully Liggy & Dee firmware update will give me "valid" quality scan on commercial discs without problems? Not got around to flashing with the new Liggy firmware yet and scared to inside warranty period! Overall highly recommended. Excellent burner. | Nec AD-5170A är helt Okej, har bränt DVD+R/RW och -RW skivor och bränningen har fungerat bra.
