Bought this drive for E349,- (approx $320,-). Easy installation, had to install no drivers. Just burned my first DVD and viewed it with no problem on mine stand-alone DVD player (Philips) Comments posted by Bored Cat from Other, October 20, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

Bought a new Dell. P-4-2.8. Got this DVD-writer. Have a Hauppauge PVR-250 mpeg2/capture board. I use Ulead VideoStudio 6. Setup works perfectly for burning DVD+RW. I've done the highest quality burns I could do, full DVD+RW takes about 4 hours. Very happy with this writer. Discs play on my home 5-disc Onkyo carousel and standalone Pioneer player as well. Got mine from a store that had reduced the price from £300 to £250 as others have said the software is not up to much and I had to spend an extra £100 upgrading software on my system to be compatable with my other drive. First impressions are good the drive does what it says on the tin Had no problem with my first DVD write and the disk worked fine in my stand alone Pioneer box so was a happy camper. BUT my disks will not work in my friends player wich is unusual because his player will play anything you throw at it except the Phillips DVD+RW disks will have a check on this. My reason for getting the writer was I do a lot of home movies on my DV cam and I would like to share my masterpieces with friends and family I would tell anyone who wants a DVD writer to go buy this Phillips Comments posted by Steve Fitz from Other, October 15, 2002. Also got my drive from best buy with $50 rebate!...This is the best DVD+R/W drive out for the price!...I had a few problems with the bundled nero software recognizing my oprite CD-R/W drive, but I just uninstalled that version of nero(as I found that the bundled version was "drive specific") and installed the actual RETAIL version of nero. Speaking of BUNDLED SOFTWARE, DON"T USE IT if you already have the latest versions of Nero, MyDVd(Sux), and PowerDVD.. Overall, great drive, a definate buy...I take away 1 point because of the software and configuration problems I encountered(but maybe those were just my fault)...Already burned my 1st DVD(with Nero), right after installation..Woo Whooo! Got it at Bestbuy for $238 after $50 mail-in rebate (Sep28 -02) Installed fast and comes with Nero5.5, Sonic_MyDVD, PowerDVD_XP and Pinnacle Studio7se. No Manuals, so have to download online. Have Seamless Link to protect against buffer underrun. I highly recommend this drive. Comments posted by tonyp12 from Other, September 30, 2002. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

READ THIS IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING THIS DRIVE, OR IF YOU BOUGHT IT BUT HAVEN'T INSTALLED IT YET: I bought this Philips DVD writer from PC World in The UK two days ago for £250. I already had an LG HL-DT-ST GCE-8320B CD-RW installed, and there no problems having both of them in my Windows XP PRO system. As soon as I installed it, I checked the firmware version of the drive, and although the drive was made on September 2002, the firmware was v1.29, which is not the latest. I downloaded and installed the latest firmware (v1.36) from the Philips website, it was updated without problems. The drive seems to be very good, but I cannot say the same about the bundled software. There were two CDs bundled withn the drive, one was Pinnacle Studio Special Edition version 7 (which I haven't installed yet). However, all the other bundled software (Nero Burning ROM, InCD, MyDVD, and PowerDVD), they all come in one CD, which upon installation does not give you the option of a custom installation. Which means, that you will install them all, or nothing. That's OK if you don't already have any of that software in your system. But I did. My version of Nero was the latest (v5.5.9.9), and I use DirectCD instead of InCD for packet writing,(InCD and DiretCD are highly incompatible with each other). I also had the latest version of PoweDVD installed. However, I wanted to try the MyDVD program, so I had to install them all. Big mistake. The bundled version of Nero is not the latest version, and it overwrote the latest Nero that was already in my system, with a previous version. Same thing happened with PoweDVD. Of course WinXP gave me a warning that I should uninstall the whole of EasyCD Creator Patinum suite if I was to install InCD, and I chose NO to that. Furthermore, the software installation crashed before completion, and I found out that many other users had the same problem. So, was it worth it to install all that over my latest versions for the sake of trying MyDVD? No it wasn't. MyDVD is so crap, that it would feel perfectly at home at home if you threw it down the toilet. It's simplistic, does not support SVCD, and you cannot make DVDs from vob files ripped to your hard drive (whereas with Nero you can). Nero and EasyCD Creator Platinum are so much better for all your DVD writing needs. After all that I had to restore my hard drive (from a backup created with Norton Ghost 2002). I then installed only the first part of the installation CD, which includes drivers and a Setup Tool, but when it asked me if I wanted to install the bundled software, I unticked that box and clicked Finish. You strongly recommend you do the same. I then ripped a DVD movie to my hard drive (using SmartRipper v2.41), and made a DVD of the ripped movie with Nero. It burned on a Philips DVD+R media in about 10 minutes, and my Playstation 2 played the DVD perfectly. So to sum things up: 1) This is a very good DVD Recorder. Buy it. 2) The bundled software is not the latest versions, so if you have them already on your system, only do the first part of the installation CD. Untick the Install Bundled Software box when you come to it, and click Finish. 3) MyDVD is one of the worst DVD writing software available. Avoid at all costs. Big blunder for Philips to include such shite in their CD, and an even bigger blunder by not giving us the option of a custom installation. Happy burning... Just got my Philips 228 DVD+R/+RW AND I am very happy with it! Very simple setup procedure, excellent software bundle and a very good quality piece of hardware that has produced 0% errors on my test CD and DVD burns using Verbitam DataLifePlus DVD+RW and BASF 1X-12X CD-R blank media (Even Windows XP pro loves this drive). I would also add that all CD-R software that I have tested so far....... CloneCD, CD-MATE, Blindwrite suite, Nero etc........ works without an hitch with the exeption of Roxio EZ CD Creator which failed to detect the drive. I did however test Roxio before I updated the Philips 228's firmware to the latest release so it may now be supported. Excellent buy, highly recommended! Good machine for the +RW crowd, makes DVD+r and -r compatible disks as well. If you already have MPEG2 files, the Sonic authoring sw it comes with is very simple to use. Comments posted by Larry Stein from Other, August 20, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Here are the results, hehe... Installation is very easy, a real P&P unit! I didn't use anything on the installation CD, the DVDRW228K was immediately recognized bij Nero 5.5.8.2 and CloneCD 4.0.0.1. I burned my holidayfilm via Pinnacle DV500+ 4.01/Adobe Première 6.02 and Ulead DVD Workstation 1.0 on to a DVD+RW and was amazed, no crappy SVCD's anymore, razorsharp picture quality and compatible with a Pioneer DV-444-K (a DVD-R/RW stand-alone DVD-player). Verdict: a very nice burner!!! Comments posted by René / Netherlands from Other, July 23, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

I bought this burner after experiencing with the DVDRW208 because the +R gives me the better compatability with DVD-players. Installation is very easy. The package comes with Nero, MyDVD, PowerDVD and InCD. After playing a bit with InCD (packet-writer), I removed that one and now I only use the multi-session facility of Nero to add content. I always seem to encounter problems with sw like DirectCD and InCD in the long run. Maybe the Mount Rainier solution will solve this. MyDVD (3.0) is a very simple authoring program, but it does the job. Nero (5.5.8.1) and PowerDVD (4.0) work fine. The DVD+RW and +DVD+R play well in the DVD950, the DVD962A and (of course) the DVDR1000 Philips players as well in my Toshiba SD M1401 PC drive. Comments posted by Jelle from Other, July 19, 2002. Hard to say if this writer is better or worse than others. A few remarks: - Installation is easy as you may expect from a standard IDE-drive. - It does not read all the DVD's I've in my collection (7 out of 10). - The site www.dvdplusrw.org claims DVD+R/W should be readable in a Toshiba SD-M1212 (the other DVD-reader in my system), it does not, not even after upgrading the firmware. - I don't have a settopbox so I can't tell you about other compatibilities. - I tried Sonic, but it failed at first (invalid instruction in mfc42.dll). After some debugging I decided to remove the Nero Imagedrive and yes, now it works fine. (Need a faster CPU though). - Burnt my first holiday-DVD without problems - I will try Nero Express in the near future (5.5.9.0). Comments posted by Leen from Other, July 17, 2002.
