| I have been ignoring the DVD Rewritable drives for a long time due to their very high cost, too many standards (i.e. -r,+r, -rw, +rw, blah, blah) and for their expensive media. But, finally... that has changed. I googled for this drive after reading some good reviews and ordered it online for $79 total (shipping included). I like the fact I can continue to overburn cd's upto 99min (800+MB) but, there are no drives that can overburn for dvd's (that I'm aware of). While dvd -r, +r, etc., are expensive in the brick and motor stores, they are approaching and sometimes the same price as regular cd-r's from online merchants. | After reading many good comments on the Lite-On products, I bought the latest 1633S (16x DVD+- RW Drive, $102US) and overall I am pleased with the drive. I use this in a WinXP SP2 and is a replacement to my aging, great Pioneer A04 bought years ago. The biggest issue I have is with the DVD-R media I use, Sony. While Sony is likely not the best, it has served me well for years. My compliant is that the Sony04D1 media (DVDR v2.0 1x-4x) will not work in the Lite-On 1633S (Illegal Media). I have tried at any speed, with same results. I purchased Sony08D1 media (DVDR v2.0 1x-8x)and they have worked flawlessly, from 1x up to the 8x speeds. Full 4gb DVDR 8x burns less than 10 min. Great for me who is used to 58 min. 2x burns. I have not tested it at 16x, due to no 16x media. Lite-On 1633S Drive was easy to install, but I had to install the NeroExpress OEM software (v6.3.1.11) for the drive to be recognized. My existing Nero 5.5.10.35 would not recognize the drive.
