| Has anyone ever written or have been able to get this drive to burn at 16x on DVD-R media? I have firmware version 1.06A and nothing, this will not burn 16x DVD-R at the rated speed. I have tried: Memorex - no luck Fuji - no luck Maxell - no luck BENQ - no luck The best speed I have achieved on this drive using 16x media is 8x! | Had this burner for a while, worked fine for a while, most I could get was 8X with newest firmware, assumed it was the media. Rectenly upgraded to a105 and now can only burn at 4X with same media as before. tried to go back to A104, A103, and A102 and now can only burn at 4X no matter what firmware is on the device. | Have had this writer for almost 12 months, 9 months of bliss now it sux. Will not read or write to a DVD-RW until I erase a CD-RW in the drive, first, works once then refuses to acknowledge a DVD-RW and so the whole process again. Have just upgraded the firmware from 102A to 105A without any joy. Thinking of replacing it with an equally cheap and nasty writer. | Had this burner since they first appeared and have to say that it's the best and most reliable drive I've ever had. Currently on A105 f/w, I have always had nothing but rock solid burns on DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD+DL and DVD-RAM. Being in the Electonics/Video trade, I have access to many different makes and models of DVD Players and have found that this GSA-4163 is the only one out of my 3 DVD burners (other 2 are NEC 3550 and LiteOn 160P6S), that burns reliably and the discs play on all standalone players I've tried, including the the Ridisc CMC Mag DL's, which it seems to love. | Garbage, even with the latest firmware. Double-layer capability failed after about 15 burns. No longer burns any kind of DL media. It has about a 10% failure rate with single-layer media, regardless of quality. Oftentimes, you will not get an indication of the failed burn as the drive does not report burn errors. Now it's not even reading original movies (tried lord of the rings, white chicks and others) when I put the disc I can hear neverending "retry sounds" and the operating system hangs. | I bought this drive from Sam's Club for a discounted price because the model is being replaced by the 4167B. It's an excellent drive. You may need to update the firmware for it to correctly recognize and write 16x discs at 16x (most media vendors have a notice placed on top of the spindle warning users about this. Read it!). The current firmware version is A105. (Go to us.lgservice.com or au.lgservice.com, click on Device Driver, select DVD-ROM(Writer) for Product, All for OS, 4163B for Subject, click Search, scroll down, and download version A105.) This drive has written hundreds of DVD+Rs and CD-Rs without a single coaster. Memorex 16x DVD+R [RICOHJPN R03 (004)] discs work especially well. It will even write the Verbatim 8x DVD+R [MCC-003-000] discs sold at Sam's Club and elsewhere at 12x (these are an excellent choice if no others have a good special on 16x media). | Got it for Xmas. It sucks. It saw my Memorex (cmc.mag.am3) 16x media as 4x, and would only burn at 4x. Could burn maxell (ritek G05) 8x at 8x, using nero and dvd decrypter.Firmware was A103, could not flash A104 or A105. Called tech support 2x, got run-a-round about compatible media, maybe my computer was slowed down by other processes, or "How do you know a firmware update would solve your problems?" I'm no pro but what I've read on this website was to have the latest firmware update installed. My year old Maddog Megastor runs circles around this, burns everything with almost no coasters. | I've had no problems with this drive until now, I've flashed it to version 105 and burnt at 16x on some datawrite discs, but I just bought a load of Ridisc blue -r 16x and it wont burn at any other speed than 4x ... which is a real shame because perviously (4x & 8x) I have generally sworn by ridisc dvd media, and want to continue to use them. If anyone knows how to sort this problem, with a flash or hack please let us know... I have emailed LG. Generally though I have been impressed with this drive esp. as I went to the shop for a diff make and settled for this as they were out of stock. | I have it for 4 months now. I can write absolutely anything with it - including some cheap - 20 cents dvd's. And the best thing is that they are usable on my standalone ;) I am also using to recover data for customers from bad cds/dvds it works perfectly for this job also. | A very good writer. A use it every day. The boundled Nero Express is very good, but it's InCD has a bug when writes DVD-RAM. It allows opening the tray during writeing. | good drive but has questionable write quality if you burn at 12x or faster. I got high jitter and a lot of errors burning past 12x. id recommend the NEC 3520, 3540 or the BenQ 1620, 1640. | I received my LG 4163 with A104 FW this Friday,July 8, as scheduled and started burning both CDs, DVD+R (book-typed to DVD-ROM) and DVD+RW very successfully without coasters! I am using Nero 6.6.0.14 but used to have a LiteOn 812S DVD-Writer, which died on me a few days back. I also used to use the LiteOn Kprobe 2 and Nero's Disc Quality tests for scanning my burnt DVD discs too. However my only dispointment with this LG 4163 is its FW/HW does NOT support any "Disc Quality" tests at all, which I have recently confirmed from my queries to the relevany Web Sites! Therefore you have to prepare to enable "Verification your burnt" or use another "Disc Quality" supportive DVD-Drive IF you wanted to test your LG 4163's burnts. However provided the LG would burn descent discs, you may not use any such practice at all, which I am going to find out with time. All in all, although I haven't tried the DVD-RAMs yet but I am very happy with my burnt discs as they are compatible with my OLD Toshiba DVD Player and other Mico DVD Player. | The main reason i got this after just 1 year with Liteon 812->832 is that the liteon have stopped burning the bulk dvds that are on sale regularly @ bestbuy/futureshop (i've tried dynex, mitsumi, and vakoss) Not sure if it's the worn and tear on the laser or the other parts, it'll burn, but the disc just can't be read from the beginning till end. It'll load fine at the beginning, but it'll "stick" towards the end. Anyway, after getting this one, i've had success with media of any brands. I'm finally able to burn those cheap dvds again... | If you have problem writing to DVD-RAM disc, make sure you install the DVD-RAM driver. LG's version is the same as the Panasonic.
