I've used this drive for a while now...almost a year. Pretty good drive overall. I've burned 100s of discs and not had any bad writes. I bought some Fuji 8x DVD+R's from Best Buy a while back and they actually burned at 12X in Nero 7!!! I finally got a chance to purchase some Philips 16x DVD-Rs last Xmas but haven't needed them until now. When I tried to burn some avi's Nero was only showing a MAX speed of 4x. I then upgraded the firmware from A302 to A303 and then to A306 which is the latest. The write speed now shows 8x. OK so this drive can only write 8x to DVD-R. But I want 16x so I go buy some Philips 16x DVD+Rs. Finally when I think it's time to burn some crazy fast discs Nero only shows the MAX write speed as 8x WTF! Just goes to show that you shouldn't buy media just because its on sale. Vive Fuji! Gotta get some 16x discs and see if they'll work :P Comments posted by =JoKeR= from Canada, May 29, 2006. Problem with Ritek G05 4x DVD-R. I burned 12, 10 on this drive and two on another, all ten from this drive were unreadble on three DVD players, other two were fine. Firware was A302. Previously I had success with Ritek but they may have been another type. Comments posted by RIchard from Canada, August 31, 2005. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

My writer has stopped reading DVDs at all. It happened 3 days ago, and I can't view any DVDs - recorded, or original. When I put in a CD, it works most of the times, but not always also. Putting in a DVD, the Windows Explorer shows me a blank CD. I tried removing my slave CD-R from the IDE cable (- it worked fine with it there, before), and I tried updating the firmware to a304. Nothing did the trick. Is there some software out there who might be causing this? I just installed the latest AnyDVD, after having the lateset version before, but after it started acting up on me, I stopped the process, and now it isn't running at all. Is there a possibility it causes it? Or eevn caused some hardware damage? Comments posted by Gardner from Israel, March 11, 2005. Rated this writer No rating. |

I have burned about 35 DVD-R Ridata G04 DVDs with this drive with the firmware A303 and all were burned excelent, I tested the discs with nero CD/DVD Speed and then copied to image in the harddrive with nero express with no problem. Note that the support for Ritek/Ridata DVD-R media was added to this drive since fw version A303. Comments posted by Easgs from Guatemala, March 08, 2005. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

No coasters using cheap Egital dvd-r midias with 8x speed. All movies (DVD Shrink+Nero) I play them in Xbox and I got some "stops". I'll use low speed next time for these midias.LOL. With Ridata dvd-r midias recording with 8x speed, I got not even a click in my Xbox. Great Hardware. I recommend it to everybody. Comments posted by Bon Scott from Brazil, March 05, 2005. I have recently obtained the GSA-4160B Super Multi DVD Drive. I have setup and installed it just as mentioned in the Owner's Manual (Master on Secondary IDE no Slave attached) and I have upgraded the Firmware(A303). But the drive does not want to read a DVD movie. I have tried various movies even bought new ones but nothing. I have also noticed that some DVD's it only reads the first 10 seconds of the DVD and then freezes my whole PC. I have used various types of movie software but all seems to give the same problem. My PC Specs are as follows: AMD Athlon XP 1800+, Epox 8K5A2 Motherboard, Radeon 7000 64MB TV out Graphics card, 512MB DDR-333 PC2700 DIMM memory, Seagate Barracuda 80GB 7200RPM 2MB Cache P-ATA HDD, Windows XP Home SP2. I exchanged threw my warrenty afer having problems with the 4081b and I recived this one. It works fairly well.. BUT I have a problem. If I connect my slace CDRW to it.. it does nothing. But it will do EVERYTHING I trow at it IF I disconect the slave CDRW. I have NO use for any of the programs that came with it or the other 4081. I was pleased with the customer support and at how quickly I recived my replacement drive. Thre a few PRINCO 4X dvd-r at it and Memorex 8X dvd-r so far. Good clean burns. Just a REAL pain to have to remove the slave. I would give it a higher rating if it were not for that one problem. I am thinking (HOPPING) it is a bois setting that needs to be changed. I am going to call LG ASAP. (could be that I am on a P4 1.6 running Windows 98SE and ROXIO programs......not sure.... I hope it is not because of ROXIO [version 5]... I have so many open session CDS I NEED ... switching to the included NERO would make my life a mess as for them CDs.) Comments posted by Penny from Canada, February 02, 2005. have had two lg burners in past-great this one as previous poster said cannot set book type, so if using dvd+r blanks use the following utility to set book type before burning-then works in all(Maybe) dvd players. http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_utility.asp seems to work on lg drives as well! Further to my previous comments below: The problems I had were due to busmaster drivers for the VIA chipset on my Gigabyte GA-7DX motherboard. Here are my findings: Windows ME VIA busmaster driver - Original version c.year2000 sorry don't know version......drive doesn't write DVDs reliably work in DMA mode - frequently fails at beginning of write with timeout. DAO cd write doesn't work from Nero. Nero CD/DVD Speed tool crashes out, sometime with a "System Halted" blue screen error. PIO mode for drive enables most functions, but limited to 1.44x DVD extraction, and writing is slow. CD writing in DAO mode fails before write begins. Window ME VIA latest VIA busmaster drivers v. 3011 Drive works OK at listed speeds, but corruption occurred to system files on C: drive during DVD extraction. Effectively broke the system. Needed a system restore from backup. Windows ME with default Microsoft "Standard IDE Controller" driver. As above - drive worked OK, but C: drive corrupted needing whole C: drive restore from backup. Fresh installation of Windows XP SP 2 using default "Windows VIA Busmaster IDE Controller". Drive works perfectly at rated speeds in all functions, no data corruption. Sticking with this combination. Happy ending! I exchanged it for the latest GSA4163B, it works great so far. :) For thoes who are stuck with GSA4160B, and have problem with DMA, I would suggest you try the lastest version software. I have good reason to suspect the problem has something to do with the free OEM software which comes in the 4160B box. When I installed my new 4163B drive, I took a short cut to see if it would work without reinstalling software. You guess it, the new drive also hangs. After I cleaned up the system and installed the free OEM software included in the 4163B box, I finally got 4163B to work!!! Your 4160B drive may work as well with the OEM software in 4163B box. Talk to a friend. I am still a big believer in LG after all. Comments posted by Joe from Canada, January 11, 2005. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Drew, make sure you are using DMA for this drive, not PIO. I had no problem until I enabled DMA (when the drive was installed, it went into PIO by default). Without DMA, burning speed won't go very high. Comments posted by Joe from Canada, January 06, 2005. Rated this writer 7 of 10. |

Writes everything I throw at it, only reason I bought it was because of media incompatabilities with my GSA-4040B and it only burning at 2X instead of 4, so it is going in my Win XP MCE machine, don't care how long it takes there. This writer (4160B) writes flawlessly, I only wish I had some dual layer media to test in it. I also use DVD-RAM for backups, works perfectly. Only complaint is about a week after I got it, they anounced a faster one coming out.... Comments posted by Drew from Canada, January 06, 2005. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

Here is the last straw. Maxell 8X DVD-R (made in Jappan) also failed to work under DMA. Under PIO, 8X burning works; but takes as much time as 4X burning does. I have no choice but returning it. Hope LG will sort it out in its future products. Life Good, enough with trouble-shooting!!! Comments posted by Joe from Canada, January 05, 2005. Rated this writer 7 of 10. |

It may well depend on the media you use. Memorex 4X DVD+RW are OK; however, Memorex 4X DVD-R only work with PIO mode. Even more shocking when I tried to update the firmware. The upgrade program also hung with DMA even though firmware was updated. If I repeat the same thing with PIO, no problem at all. I am thinking about returning it to Futureshop. PIO is not good; it barely keeps up with 4X burning. It should never hang no matter what the reason is! Comments posted by Joe from Canada, January 04, 2005. Rated this writer 7 of 10. |

Like Joe, I found that this drive only worked reliably (if at all) when DMA was disabled. Nero would lock up then timeout with "SCSI timeout" errors after several minutes. This would happen at the "Setting write speed" stage. I have a Gigabyte motherboard with Athlon CPU. There's a separate utility (DMATool) which is used to set each drive to use DMA or PIO. I was at the point of returning the drive for a refund when, after much head-scratching, I found that setting the LG drive to PIO mode made everything work OK. I am having interface problem with this drive. Have to use PIO; DMA often causes this drive to hang. Memorex 4X DVD+RW, no problem. Memorex 4X DVD-R can work only with PIO mode. DMA will hang. Comments posted by Joe from Canada, January 03, 2005. Rated this writer 7 of 10. |

Plays everything so far - and lets me read and edit DVDRAM from my Panny E55 - which is good news! Doesn't like burning el cheapo DVD-R blanks, but OK with decent media -- writes well to DVD RAM, which I now use for archiving. good value for money. Just make sure you use the media recommended in the user`s manual or you will get ciclic redundance errors at the time of ripping the created copies or focus and track errors at the time of burning. Check this out. -----------Reply to Customer Enquiry ------------ Great Company. Great People. Dear Eduardo, Thank you for contacting LG Electronics concerning your computer-related inquiry. Please try using one of the types of media that is recommended specifically for the GSA-4160B: CD-R : LG, Mitsubishi Chemical, Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, TDK or SKC discs are recommended. CD-RW : LG, Ricoh, Mitsubishi Chemical, Verbatim discs are recommended. DVD-R : Maxell, Taiyo Yuden, JVC are recommended. DVD-RW : JVC, Mitsubishi Chemical, TDK are recommended. DVD+R : Taiyo Yuden, JVC, Ricoh are recommended. DVD+RW : TDK, FujiFilm are recommended. DVD-RAM : Maxell, Panasonic are recommended. DVD+R DL : Mitsubishi Chemical is recommended.
