Before you buy this unit, do yourself a favor and check HPs compatibility list for dvd players...

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg41401.html

If your dvd player is listed, double check and call tec support for the dvd player you own and confirm your player will play dvd writeable/re-writeable media.

I confirmed my player (Samsung dvd m301) on HPs compatibility list and bought based on that information but have had no luck getting disks to play!!!

Samsung tec support told me my DVD M301 player will not play dvd writeable/re-writeable media!!!

HP, Please take this unit off of your list!

So far no real problems. I did make one DVD+R coaster but as I later found out it was the fault of Ulead DVD Workshop's lack of support for DVD+R.

I have an older Panasonic A360 set top DVD player and it plays DVD+R media without any problems. This in itself is amazing as the A360 doesn't even play CD-R/RW media. I did have some problems with DVD+RW on the A360 but as far as I can tell the problems are caused by the way that the audio is encoded, the player will play some DVD+RW disk though.

I also own a Philips DVD 711 which plays both DVD+R and DVD+RW disks. On the whole I am really pleased with this player.

I have only used HP media up until now.

This burner rocks! Both HP and Imation media tried-- DVD+RW and +R. The one issue I ran into is that I can't switch compatibility mode for DVD+RW discs unless I change the IDE drive from DMA to PIO mode. Not a big deal since Win XP Pro lets me do this without reboots. Go figure that HP phone support actually did their job and found this solution for me? Makes me a happy customer.

Burned projects using Ulead DVDFactory, Nero, and bundled software. Nero InCD works great with DVDs (ver 5.5.8.2).

Just got my HP DVD 200j replacement for HP DVD 100j
Burned some DVD's... no problem except :
Stand alone players and DVD-ROM's will not recognize disk burned with
HP RecordNow ( comes with the drive ) and Stomp
RecordNow Max 4 (Full version of the above) so don't
use it ! It does not trush the disk, but only HP 200j will play it.
Nero 5582 works just great !!! with DVD+R or DVD+RW

I have just finished testing this drive, the software comes with it, it suck's. I have use the Veritas Primo software to burn DVD-DVD.
After it most of DVD-ROM can't play.Only Pioneer DV-106s DVD-ROM read it have no ploblem. this is a great DVD-ROM drive.
But the Panasoic LFD-311 as DVD-R/RAM after it burn, can play on any DVD-ROM drive.
One this about the HP DV200i the software is so bad,I can't even make a DVD to DVD copy, so end up I have to use the Veritas PrimoDVD to make a copy.

Recently purchased the 200i from Dell. So far, it's been a pleasure to use.

Installed in Windows XP Pro without a hitch. Burned my first movie (9 min home movie) to Memorex DVD+RW on the first night. Used Ulead DVD Workshop (create the files) and NERO to burn them to DVD+RW. Took all of about 1 hour from start to finished.

DVD+RW played perfectly in the Pioneer DVD 333.

Second night, decided to add menus and chapter points using DVD Workshop. Tested it on DVD+RW disc from previous night (erasure took about 2 or 3 minutes using Nero) with success (some software bugs found using DVD Workshop but easily resolved).

Burned the movie to Imation DVD+R, which played perfectly in the DVD 333.

Will test on Sony DVD players, but not expecting anything. Over all, I'm pleased with this unit.

I chose "+" over "-" because the DVD+R/RW offered the best of both worlds (from my p.o.v.): Video and Data storage. As I see it, the "+" seems to fit the group of users who need reliable data storage solutions and want video solutions in a single unit. The "-R/RW" drives may be able to support storage, but it's strong point appears to be video, just as DVD-RAM is to data. The "+" fits right in the middle.

I hope , when it's all said and done, that "+" will be supported and compatable long enough for the Blue-ray units to become affordable... After all, I'm sure we all have 20GB projects we'd like to back-up, not to mention watch on that HDTV we'd all like to have.

It is very fast (much faster than the Sony drive I bought earlier and returned) . So far I was able to burn DVD+RW with HPREcord Max and Nero software on Verbatim disks without any problems and play it on Sony NS700P and Apex AD-1500 DVD players.

I may have noticed a problem with HP DVD+R disks. When I burn one, it plays fine in my set-tops and drives, but as soon as I stick a label on it (standard CD labels like Avery, etc.) the disk becomes practically unplayable. This has happened to about 6 disks or so.

well I got a dvd 200i and I think it's the best . I can burn my ps2 games and play the all with my mod chips. I also like how you can make your svcd opening . it play in all dvd players. buy it

Yes it works under WinXP - Using it here right now. HP software is OK but I use Nero for most stuff. DVD+RW's play back fine in my Apex AD-1500 and the Xbox. Not tried the DVD+R disk yet.

I'm hoping HP add DVD+RW Mt Rainer support via a firmware update as Lite-On are doing with their CD-RW's...

I haven't tried the DVD+R yet but the DVD+RW does work in the Playstation 2 and yet doesn't work with my Apex 500.

I've done some DVD works with this drive for quite a while. So far its been great. However for those that demands higher quality video production, I don't recommend using the "MyDVD" capture function . Tends to jitter during fast action. I solved the problem by using Pinnacle Studio to creat MPEG2, then use MyDVD to author and burn. Works great now, with longer time. The jitter is bearable for non-music protion of the video, but becomes significant and distracting when there's music. Great drive!

Hello in response to rphunt DVDit PE will do either PCM or Dolby Digital , i Just did a VCD encode of a new movie to mpeg2 that was 135 minutes and autherd it in DVDit PE and let DVDit Burn it and convert the .wav to Dolby Digital and it worked great using the verbatim dvd+r's
i dont see the problem with any media and my drive and i have the 200i i think its a good drive, i have used verbatim, phillips, sony, HP Media and it all works the same

To Enrique, I recommend ULead DVD Movie Factory ($100) or DVD Workshop ($300) for authoring. They make little change to the original video files, so you keep your original quality (unlike Videowave). Apps like DVDit and myDVD convert audio to PCM, not mpeg audio, so you're limited to 1 hour of video on a DVD.

Just a Question
How come Hollywood can fit 8 or more Gigs on a DVD?
and we can only fit 4.7Gigs
what up with that.
can anyone explain to me please

Comments posted by Kish from Other, May 22, 2002. Rated this writer 7 of 10.

To Rphunt

i used Verbatims and two othere Generic brands which i bought for a $3.70 each.

But now i am using other media like memorex, hp and sony
and it works great. I would like to be able to use generic media
because they are so much cheeper.
maby a firmware update will solve the problem.

Bought for $499 from CompUSA to replace HP 9500 series CD-R/RW writer. Have the Memorex and HP DVD+RW media that play just fine in my Toshiba SD-V280 DVD players. Was able to easily create VCD, DVD and cDVD movies. ALso I now have 4.7 Gigs of CD-R/RW for backup. Tested drag and drop (ok) on local machine and across the network.

I'm running nothing fancy, a PIII 600Mhz with 256K, 2 Ultra DMA 20Gig hard drives.

Strange, when I create cDVD movies the embedded DVD player auto installs/runs on all my 3 desktops but won't autoplay in 2 VAIO laptops? Not sure of the resolution on this.

To RPhunt, I,ve tried with Nero 5.5-8.0, but it needs an authoring tool to burn DVD and I don,t now where to get it. I bought the 200i
at Circuit City for $499 with a $100 instant gift card, which I use
to buy 2 HP DVD+RW for $12, I also bought Hp DVD+R, they matched HP site price of $6. The verbatims DVD+R, I got them at Best Buy for
$7 I've used only 1, and I am returning the rest, because of compatibility problems

Got it in The Future Shop for 799 Canadian dollars (come with
5 +R and 5 +RW) plus TAX. Made some DVD family movie (from
my Sony video camara) on a DVD+RW disk using DVDit Pro 2.5.

No problem when played on my Shinco DVD player. Only problem is that you have to unstall the Easy-CD's directCD before install HP's DLA software. Give it 9 out of 10

To Enrique,
With Dazzle DVC2, DVD Workshop, the DVD200i, and Nero,
I find it a lot of fun making DVDs. Yes, otherwise,
it can be very tedious. But I will try the Verbatims
and see what problems I get. What vendor did you use?

To Kish,
What brands of DVD+Rs are you trying?

Comments posted by rphunt from Other, May 21, 2002. Rated this writer No rating.

I bought 3 Verbatims DVD+R, first one give me a Media error just before it finished burning, I tried it on my Aiwa DV370,after several attemps plays, it doesn,t play on my KLH DVD 8350,reads no disk, the HP +R brand works quite good in both except for some sporadical freezes, I use Ulead Movie maker, instead of my DVD that came with it, which gives me
some sound problems, with both +R and +RW, also some ocassional pixelating noise on all, I think this technology is still to young, and we will have to wait until it improves. Also the process of making a DVD is tedious especially creating the MPEG2.
The cheapest media I found is the HP.

Comments posted by Enrique from Other, May 21, 2002. Rated this writer 7 of 10.

I have a drive and it works great with Verbatim DVD+RW disks.

Great drive, fast and the disks work in all DVD players I have tried.

Very satisfied.

Comments posted by Mark from Other, May 20, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

I bought a new drive this past weekend and have had luck with the Verbatim DVD+RW media. I burned a DVD video format and was able to watch the DVD on my Mintek but not on my Apex 500. I will probably use the DVD+RW to get exactly what I want as a test and then burn the final item on a DVD+R so it has better support on more DVD players. I have noticed that about 5 times in the hour of video, it has some noise on the screen which is pretty bad which doesn't show when watching it on the computer.

Comments posted by Brian from Other, May 20, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

I bought this drive about 5 days ago and i am not at all satisfied
This drive is not compatiable with media made by other manufactures,
it is a very expensive incompatability.
Just think i have to allways buy hp media at hp prices.

Note these comments are made based on my own experiance. I tried DVD+R
media made by 3 different companies. the drive did not accept any of them. If there are otheres out there that have successfully used
other media in this HP DVD200i Drive please comment.
IF Not I think a Class Action Suite is in order. Which will be the second Class Action Suite against HP concerning their line of DVD+RW
drives.
