| Buyed this nice recorder a week ago. Found one little problem. I created full (4.3GB) dvd-disk to enclosed +rw disk. Problem is that playback freezes about in half of movie, first it starts dropping frames and freezing for a second or so, but it get's worse and finally stops playing. +R disks no problem so far. | No problems and haven't had a problem with DVD writing. I am absolutely delighted. There is one small minor problem. I have a Plextor 1610 CD-RW slaved with the 504A as primary. I can't write CD-RW disks on the 504A. If I remove the 1610, all functions work. I bought Roxio 6.0 CD-DVD Writer and am satisfied, but Nero is better. | I've been using the 504A for a month now, and have burned close to 40 disks, using SmartBuy RW, Verbatum R, and Fuji R media. It is a delightful drive; very quiet and competent. I only wish it burnt DVD- also. It's down to about $200 now wwith the Plextor rebate. If you're looking for a good + drive it lives up to the namesake's reputation. | This drive simply out-preforms the Pioneer A05/105 hands down. I created an image file of a movie, Enemy At the Gate, using Pinnacle's InstantCopy, burned it on both Drives and the Plextor's copy was flawless. The Pioneer copy experienced Pixelation and Garbled Audio 80% into the movie. I even tried to to burn the same File to the Pioneer at 1x but it still couldn't perform as well as the Plextor did at 4x. | Got mine from Dell for $220 shipped and taxed. For a rebadged NEC it sure looks good in black. So far I've burned 5 discs in it, every one good. I'm using Fuji media, cheapest I could find in the area. Only tested at 2.4X so far, I don't have any 4X media yet. I love this burner so far. I don't know if it's because it's running Plextor firmware or not, but it appears less flakey than an OEM NEC I tried recently. Does the NEC support a powerrec ? It really seems to make a difference in readability as I have an Pioneer A106 DVD player than nero drive info claims can only read -R and it can read my +Rs, there are some skips from time to time but it actually works, kudos to Plextor. The burner does have one oddity which I noticed with the NEC 1100A I borrowed, on my firewire enclosure it creates a phantom Hard Disk on the secondary. Nothing I tried gets rid of it. It's harmless but annoying. Also it interferes with simultaneous access to HDs on the same firewire bus. I'm rehousing it in a Pyro hopefully that'll make the problem go away. I'm giving it a 9 instead of a 10 because no decent DVD Authoring software worth a damn (Roxio 5 is crap), Cheapo IDE Cable included instead of an nice 80 strander. But this is really nit picking at this price. Versus a regular NEC I'd say the reason I bought this model is because of the Plextor Firmware. Usually they support drives for years. In 6 months NEC will be putting this model on EOL and we'll be getting +/- drives no doubt. So I'm paying the extra $40-50 for plextors continuing support. Oh an have I mentioned it LOOKS GREAT IN BLACK. | £237.00p incl. del. From Dabs arrived next day. This is my first DVD writer and went for the Plextor after reading good reviews. I primarily wanted a DVD writer for video editing. I am a keen user of Pinnacle Studio 8 (included with plextor purchase). My first attempt at burning have been mixed. I have used the bundled Verbatim +RW disc to record just a small clip from existing DV tape and when played back on my Pioneer 350 standalone player persistant freezing of frames was evident about 15 secs. Made an SVCD of the same clip no problem (Memorex). Burnt clip again using custom settings on Studio 8 at 87% quality, play back was much improved with only one minor very small glitch. | It's a Plextor! is there anything else to say :-). Flawless installation, smooth and quiet operation. Burning either CD's or DVD's is a breeze. Works fine with Nero and DVDShrink. | Works great for burning. You need the latest version of nero inorder for nero to see it though(5.5.10.15) :( Has a possible problem doing copy on the fly when copying a cd from the dvd burner to a cd burner. | No problems whatsoever on win XP pro. I have been testing it for over a week now and I have burned with Fuji, Maxell, Verbatim, Sentinel, Sony and Mmore media... I'm very satisfied and have nothing negative to say. Only for ripping you're better of using a dvd-rom player like the Sony DDU 1621 or Lite-On 163/165 or any other good DVD-rom player. Ripping with the plextor takes 35 minutes... with my Sony DDu1621 it takes 10 minutes. But most if not all DVD writers have the same problems ripping.
