Hi i got this drive yesterday (25th) for a Xmas present and i'd just like to say that it is superb! It does everything that i want without any problems. It took me 2hrs and 30mins to copy and write a DVD. I recommend you use DVD Decrypter, (Search using google) which is free, TMPGEnc Plus 2.59 etc, which costs money unless you get a hack (search Google for TMPGEnc Plus Keygen) and DVDx which is free. STEP 1: When using DVD Decrypter the easiest and quickest way to copy a DVD is to change the mode (found at the top of the screen) to ISO-Read. This basically copies the whole of the disk and puts it into .ISO file. STEP 2: After doing this simply change the mode to ISO-Write, then select the file that you created using the ISO-Read mode. Then simply start writing on to the DVD+RW disk. However this only works on DVDs that are Below 4.6GB in size. If the DVD you want to copy is over this size the best thing to do is follow step 1 (ISO-Read mode) and then go to download.cnet.com and search for HjSplit. This will split the .ISO file into whatever size you want. E.g. 4.37GB (to fit on one DVD+RW disk and the overflow to fit on a second DVD+RW disk.) After this has been done open DVD Decrypter and put it into ISO-Write mode. Then open the first file that HjSplit created (which should be around 4.37GB or lower). Then start writing to disk (by pressing the picture of a Harddrive and DVD disk). After this has been completed open the second file (overflow from the 4.37GB file) and write this .ISO file on to a different DVD+RW disk. DVDx is a program that will convert the main DVD files (.vob) in to Mpeg files directly from the DVD. TMGEnc Plus is a program that will convert any video file (e.g. AVI, MPG). It is a good program to use if you want to improve the quality of MPEG files created using DVDx. There are several templates you can use, such as PAL DVD Thank you for reading my informaton on this DVD Writer. I hope it will make DVD copying easier for you. Hi, just got this drive via Ebay (new) for 250 Euro. It is a really good drive and my Harman Kardon DVD-5 reads my self-burned Video-DVDs without any errors. The drive is fast and I do not need DVD+R, since the DVD+RWs are getting cheaper and cheaper.... Since this drive is the standard for most foreign branded burners you can save your money and buy the original. Excellent Drive for the money! Comments posted by Markus from Other, November 21, 2002. Bought this in September from Dixons UK. Installation fine, and Nero 5.5 recognises it. The supplied software is a disaster, and I've yet to burn my first DVD. The supplied packet-writing app locks the drive forever, whereas Nero's InCD seems OK. I'm hoping Pinnacle V8 will work, otherwise I'm taking it back. Used Nero to copy a DVD, and it played back fine on a cheap Logix DVD player (bought from Asda) but not on my Encore450. CD-burning uses Ricoh's 'JustLink', but is limited to 12x. DVD playback is poor - the cheap DVD-ROM drive it replaced was better. Made a 4.7GB DVDR without a problem. Don't buy this recorder unless you have a pressing reason to choose it against newer competition. Caveat Emptor. Comments posted by Gordon from Other, October 02, 2002. Rated this writer 3 of 10. |

Bought it 3 months ago and it still rocks. Don't need the DVD+R thing really, coz I have DVD-R/W already available with my Pioneer DVR-104 (and DVD-R/W media is cheaper). But, I think IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE to upgrade to DVD+R with just an Firmware Update - Philips did it for its Standalone DVD-Recorders and so far as I know they already have a RICOH DVD+RW drive in too...no joke. So, sooner or later it will be possible - I think. Correct me if its not correct, thanks. Comments posted by _chef_ from Other, August 15, 2002. Rated this writer 8 of 10. |

I have never even seen a Ricoh DVD writer, but the Ricoh 9120A DVD/CDRW drive I have has had to go back twice within the first year and I am still having problems with it. They also don't have very good returns and servicing facilities in the UK, the main Europe HQ is in Germany! I will never buy another Ricoh product again from my experiences with this drive. $499?!? I can buy it for $199. It cannot write to DVD+R write-once media but it is still capable of 2.4x DVD+RW and 12/10/32 CD-RW. It IS a good alternative to existing CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drives that usually cost about $100 to $200. Comments posted by Ken from Other, July 25, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

buy it but make sure that it says that it will record dvd-r's on the box then call philips and they will give you a new one that does as long as you have the box. and product number. that is what happened to me. <SupaphlY> Comments posted by SupaphlY from Other, June 24, 2002. I purchased this drive apparently before the united states release unbeknownst to me and was not allowed any tech support unless I called Europe or Japan. So far no other dvd player has been able to read the format. Otherwise it works fine, however I purchased it to begin putting my animation on a format to distribute from my home... Looks like I'll be investing alot more. Product works well, support and information is terrible. Comments posted by Ramshaq from Other, May 16, 2002. Rated this writer 5 of 10. |

Wow ! I thought after reading the description on the box. "Compatible to all existing DVD-ROM and drivers." (Maybe the english description dithers, but the german description on the box anounces this). So i took the new drive home. The drive installation went smooth and without any problems at all. The first thing i came up to was the 30 day trial warning of the burner soft (I don't know if something went wrong, or if this is really the case). Well anyway, i started myDVD and tried to create a 70 Minute Video that i recorded at the Expo 2000 and failed with an "Not enough Space" error. Looks like myDVD always uses the highest quality for imported videos, limiting the recording time to about an hour :( My next try with a smaller holiday Video went on and this time it worked and i could play the DVD using the writer and Win-DVD. Placing the DVD+RW in my Sony 725D failed, the player showed "No Disc". Placing it in the Nec DV5700A in my computer the drive recognized the DVD as an Audio CD, Windows opened the Media Player and, of course, failed to play the contents. Placing the disk in the Thoshiba DVD ROM of my notebook causes the drives Firmware to fail and i had a hard time of getting the disc out again. After many tries, more visits to our neighbours and about half a dozen diffrent players later i contacted the Hotline, that directed me to the compatiblity list on the website of the DVD+RW Alliance. Noticing that i own none of the devices listed there (Note that only devices known as compatible are listed there) I gave up and returned the drive the next day. I'm not sure if all my problems with this drives were caused by the drive itself, or the >not so< "compatible" DVD+RW media. But for the "compatible with ALL DVD-ROM drives" on the box i rate this drive 1 and wait for other people to do further beta testing. Comments posted by Dirk from Other, May 16, 2002. I can't wait for DVD+R media to be released either....but it won't work with this drive :o! All first generation Ricoh DVD+RW drives WILL NOT work with DVD+R. You (and I) are going to have to buy a new second gen DVD+R/W drive at $499. I'm getting a Pioneer A04, I've already been burned by the DVD+R Alliance and will not again... the device i have is slightly different its the mp5122e but similar, a dvd+rw. for me, once the thing does what it is supposed to do, im happy. im not into brand names or this and that. it works, it burns dvds, it burns cds and they run fine in any dvd/cd device i have tried them with. those of you that think the device sux have too much time on your hands.. get yourself a pioneer and then slag that off too.. be happy with what ya got is my policy. this device is reasonably priced and does the bloody job. when they release a 5x dvd burner, i'll change it, till then i'm happy Comments posted by @lionic from Other, March 12, 2002. I have just bought this excellent device, and I am overly pleased with it`s features ! As I have an SONY DVP-536D DVD drive it was important to me that DVD+RW`s recorded with the RIOCH would run on my SONY - IT WORKS, AND IT WORKS GREAT !!! I am happy with it`s writing speed, and can`t wait to start capturing and encoding my favourite TV series - and ofcourse, to write and rewrite them onto DVD ! Really, really, great device ! Got the drive, put it in, burned the DVD and it worked great. First try. The only thing lacking with this DVD+RW is the software. So I used Nero, took 15 min to burn 90 min of video. Comments posted by jon from Other, March 01, 2002. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

I a perfectly happy with this new burner acquired in december. I appreciate the speed 2.4 And with nero update, it works in the right way. I am just afraid that the DVD+R compatibilité promised by surcouf guys "well informed" ? is not so evident now. Just perhaps a little problem with burning chapters with pinnacle espresss, ulead factory .etc ... they are not so well recognized by the standalone dvd's players that I have tested : thomson 5200 and oneno brand ...
