At 16x, you get ±8 coasters. 12x 100% OK. Used for misc audio/cine and back-up of correspondence & images, for ±11 years. Archive so far so good... :o)

I can't put the year I purchased since this site isn't updated yet. I bought this 3/2011. Some reason Tiger Direct (CompUSA) had only two of these left and I only bought one for $6.99. It wasn't on sale so I guess it was the last of them.
It burns well. I've finished about 10 dvds of data back up with no problems, then again I could care less if I did get a coaster or two. For 50 dvds at $7, that isn't anything to complain about.
As for playback in a dvd player - I can't do that due to these being used for data. My dvd player is an Oppo DV-980H. I'm sure these will work in there.

All discs have successfully been written down on maximum speed. All the same one disk has been spoilt. It has occurred when the program began to check the files written down on a disk. More I did not do check.

Burned fifteen discs in one session (both data and DVD-video) with no coasters. All files verified with Nero verify, and CRC32 and MD5 checksums. Files copy back to the hard drive at an average speed just above 12x with no noticeable slowdowns (meaning the error count is sufficiently low enough that the drive isn't having to slow down to perform lots of error corrections). Write speeds of 8x, 12x, 16x, and 18x worked fine.

Decent but don't expect too much. Of 200 bought about 15-16 became coasters. For its price, it's a good enough tradeoff. Burn at 8x for optimal quality/speed, 16x is reachable but with scans bordering on horrible.
Scans at any speed were not phenomenal even at 4x (but again - decent), and as I said earlier, don't expect too much.

Media burns with quite high error levels. There's jumps in error levels e.g. PIE from 300-400 can drop to 10-20 then grow up to something about 300-400 and drop again. I think it's bad write strategy in my recoder.
