  1. Since my Liteon LVW5101 is not working (see my previous post), I am looking for a reliable dvd recorder. Main purpose is to transfer a large collection of VHS tapes which I have, mostly of east indian classical concerts. I want something that is easy to use, reliable, and gives great quality transfers.

I have been doing some research and I am considering the LG DR1F9H, Samsung R135/R145, and Panasonic ES15/ES25. The reviews on all 3 are mixed, and I have checked reviews on Amazon, Cnet, and on this site. I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

VHS tapes means you'll want filters. That means anything using the LSI Logic chipset. I know the LG and Panasonic are using LSI, the Panasonic might. If you get the Panasonic, you can only put 2 hours on a DVD without it looking overcompressed. The LG and Samsung also have 4-hour modes that look okay, but probably still best to stick with SP mode (2 hours per DVD).

    I'd personally grab the LG.

Bought a Samsung DVD-R130 and the discs it made would only play back on itself. Not in my computer, (Apple G4 laptop) nor in an external NEC drive or a JVC standalone or a portable DVD player. All discs produced by this machine were unreadable except by the machine itself.
